This center, rich with content and technology, will capture as never before the heroic stories, surprising discoveries, and innovative ideas that have shaped our community and, in some cases, have helped shape the world! 3 What WE ARE DOING The Boulder History Museum has begun an $8 million capital campaign to create the new Museum of Boulder by purchasing and renovating the Masonic Lodge at Pine Street and Broadway. With four times more space than the existing Boulder History Museum, the new Museum of Boulder will be a completely new and dynamic experience, within walking distance of Boulder s Pearl Street Mall. In addition to telling the history of Boulder, the new Museum of Boulder will feature interactive exhibits that will teach and inspire visitors in science, technology, athletics, natural foods, and other elements of Boulder s legacy and culture. The Museum s Children s Discovery Zone will offer fun, interactive, and educational experiences. Expanded youth and adult programs, classes, and lectures will be offered in the new Learning Center. With the help of generous gifts to the capital campaign, the Museum of Boulder will open to the public in People are already calling the new Museum of Boulder The MOB. 4 JOIN The MOB NEW MUSEUM NEW EXPERIENCE In a society undergoing rapid and puzzling change, an innovative and energetic local history museum serves as a Global Positioning System for its fortunate community, helping its citizens to locate themselves in space and time. The work of the Boulder History Museum already enriches the minds and souls of Boulder s residents and visitors. In its new building, the Museum of Boulder will be the center of thought and civic exchange, and a vital point of orientation for the city, the county, the state, and the nation. 5 Why WE ARE DOING IT A lthough we re proud of the Boulder History Museum s nearly 70-year legacy, teaching three generations about the history of Boulder, we know we can do more. Constrained in the space of the Harbeck-Bergheim House on Boulder s University Hill, the Museum doesn t have room to provide the programs that the community wants and deserves, such as the fabulously-successful series, Boulder Conversations with Extraordinary People. This series has introduced the community to dozens of Boulder s leaders in science, the arts, business, and athletics. We also recognize that Boulder lacks a museum of science and technology, amazing considering the discoveries and innovations happening around us every day at the University of Colorado, in the Federal labs, and through our high-tech businesses. And, since the Collage Children s Museum closed its doors more than 10 years ago, Boulder has lacked a museum in which young children can explore and learn. The Museum of Boulder will fill all of these needs. OUR VISION The new Museum of Boulder will provide engaging experiences that celebrate the spirit of Boulder. Through dynamic exhibits and captivating programs, visitors will discover the stories of our past, explore the creativity and innovation of the present, and envision the future of our community. The Museum of Boulder will be a catalyst for conversation and a welcoming place in which to explore, discover, reflect, and have fun. 5

6 JOINThe MOB WELCOME TO THE MOB START AT THE Traveling EXHIBIT GALLERY Join us on a floor-by-floor visit to the new Museum of Boulder. You will enter The MOB from the Broadway side of the 1948 Boulder Masonic Lodge Building, built by renowned architect James Hunter, who also designed Boulder s Municipal Building. You will be greeted in the 1,100-square-foot lobby, which will double as a reception area for visitors and a community gathering space for events when the Museum is closed. Your first stop will be the Traveling Exhibit Gallery. In this 2,800 square-foot stateof-the-art space, The MOB will offer regularly changing exhibitions and experiences, many of which will not be seen elsewhere in Colorado. These will include traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institution and other prestigious museums around the nation. In addition, the gallery will host locally-created exhibits that reveal untold stories about the roots and culture of our community. These will contain oral histories and Boulder artifacts that have never been displayed before. 6

7 DESCEND THE STAIRS TO THE Discovery Zone A s you descend the stairs you will enter the 1,300 square-foot Children s Discovery Zone, where kids under eight years old can explore in a meaningful, age-appropriate learning environment. This stimulating, highly-interactive center will focus on discovery, creativity, imaginative play, and self-expression. With exhibits like a kid-sized Boulder Farmers Market and giant building blocks, kids will want to return over and over again. The Children s Discovery Zone also will have a 700 square-foot outdoor play space and patio with exciting outdoor environmental experiences. Here kids and their parents can enjoy the great Boulder outdoors while exploring things like a child-sized climbing wall, a bicycle that powers a waterwheel, and a children s garden. 7

8 Z G O UPSTAIRS TO THE Permanent EXHIBIT GALLERY The interactive displays in the Permanent Exhibit Gallery will offer dynamic experiences related to: A scend the stairs or elevator to the 2,600 square-foot second-floor Permanent Exhibit Gallery. This gallery will engage visitors in the Boulder experience through a dynamic atmosphere of media-enhanced storytelling, high- and low-tech interactive opportunities, an Inventor Center where visitors become innovators, and dramatic displays from our permanent collection of more than 44,000 Boulder artifacts and more than 900,000 Boulder photos and documents. Boulder s Roots Things Born in Boulder Sports, Technology, Natural & Organic Foods Pushing Boundaries Sustainability Coexisting Civic Conflicts & Milestones Creating a Vision for the Future Visitors will be immersed in the innovative world of Boulder s high-tech industries, participate alongside the city s world-class athletes, or engage in a policy debate on land use. Along with celebrating Boulder s incredible achievements, the Museum will honor the area s roots, delving deep into the story of Chief Niwot and the Arapaho who called Boulder home before the European settlers arrived. The Permanent Exhibit Gallery will tap into the pulse of Boulder, with live data feeds from cultural, educational, and research institutions, and will reflect the region as it evolves becoming a window to the community. 8

9 JOINThe MOB learning CENTER & FLEXIBLE SPACE Next door to the Permanent Exhibit Gallery, the 1,100 square-foot Learning Center will be a flexible space, allowing the Museum of Boulder to offer a great variety of programs for varied audiences: School groups will have an opportunity for in-depth and handson exploration of topics relevant to their curriculum. After-school enrichment programs will provide a much-needed resource for parents as well as scouts and other community youth organizations. Adult programs on specific subjects, lectures on inventions and scientific advancements made in Boulder, and stories from entrepreneurs and many other remarkable people in our community will further enrich and educate participants. The Learning Center, which will host groups of up to 150 people, also will serve community gatherings and receptions. It will be a place to see and be seen. 9

10 JOINThe MOB NEW MUSEUM NEW EXPERIENCE The new Museum of Boulder will be adjacent to the Carnegie Library for Local History, which houses a repository of Boulder history, including 200,000 photographs and 700,000 historic documents owned by the Museum and on permanent loan to the library. KEEP GOING TO THE RooftopDECK Up the next and final flight of stairs, you will see staff hard at work making The MOB happen. Then step outside to the 1,500 square-foot Rooftop Deck, where the history of Boulder will be laid out before you in spectacular panorama. From this vantage point, you ll spot the sandstone halls of the University of Colorado, founded in 1876; you ll see the historic buildings of nearby Pearl Street, Boulder s downtown since the 1860s; and you ll be amazed by the majestic Red Rocks, revered by the Arapaho tribe. You will enjoy a weather station and rooftop garden where you can learn about our changing climate. And if you re there for an exhibit opening or private function, you may enjoy some wine and cheese as you watch the sun set behind the Flatirons. There is a lot to see. A lot to learn. A lot to celebrate at The MOB. GO BEYOND THE Museum Walls Your visit to the Museum of Boulder is just the beginning of learning about the history of our community. The MOB will also establish its presence around the city and tap into events and activities that are key features of Boulder s identity, such as Chautauqua, the University, the Federal labs, Pearl Street Mall, the Bolder Boulder, the Reservoir, and the Farmers Market. Public exhibit components ranging from interpretive structures to biking tours equipped with mobile technologies will expand the reach of the Museum beyond its walls, fulfilling the Museum s mission to engage and inspire the community. 10

11 NEW MUSEUM NEW EXPERIENCE A Museum of Boulder! What a great idea a place where the interesting past and the vibrant present of this community and its people can be shown in variety. It will be a place where ideas of the future may be dreamed. I have memories of a variety of history displays and museums. Those range from a Depression-vacant store to the Squires and the Harbeck houses. There were pauses in the county courthouse and the razed Central School to Broadway and Arapahoe. Now there is a broader concept and a project worthy of support! Laurence Paddock Former Editor, Boulder Daily Camera BUILDING ON OUR Past The Boulder Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded in 1944 by Boulder citizens led by A.A. Gov Paddock, then publisher of the Boulder Daily Camera. The Society operates the Boulder History Museum, which has been located in the city-owned historic landmark, the Harbeck-Bergheim House, on University Hill since Despite the limited space in this 1899 residence, with only the first floor accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, the Museum welcomes 9,000 visitors each year, including history buffs, school groups, scout troops, tourists, and many others. Exhibits include artifacts from a collection of over 44,000 objects of historical significance. The Museum also conducts programs and activities for youth and adults, and serves another 9,000 people annually through outreach programs at schools, senior centers, and other community venues. 11

12 JOINThe MOB ASSURING OUR sustainability Before launching the endeavor to create the new Museum of Boulder, the Board of Trustees engaged the professional services of AECOM, a global planning and design firm, to evaluate the size of museum Boulder can sustain. Using conservative assumptions, AECOM estimates that the Museum s attendance will grow from 9,000 annual visitors today, to nearly 30,000 in the new, larger location. Today, the Boulder History Museum is cash-flow break-even, with a $600,000 annual budget. In the new location, with increased admissions, memberships, bookstore revenues, facility rentals, and contributions, AECOM forecasts that the Museum of Boulder will be cash-flow break-even within three years after opening. To be prudent, we have included the initial years forecasted operating shortfalls in the capital campaign to ensure financial sustainability. Copies of AECOM s report and our post-opening operating budget are available upon request. 12
