RF/Microwave HF35C Gigahertz Solutions Instructions By: Linnette M. Beck AP, DOM (Revision dated 3/1/14) Warning: Get to know the meter! If you don t, you will think your environment is safe, when it is not or visa versa. Read these instructions while viewing the meter. The HF35C is a high quality RF/Microwave meter. The purpose of using the HF35C is to test for RF and microwaves. This meter does NOT test magnetic fields or electric fields or radioactive isotopes such as from Fukushima. The detection of those items require a different meter. If you are interested in measuring any of those, contact my office to rent one of those meters. The HF35C is such a high quality RF/microwave meter because it: 1 1) Is sensitive down to.1 microwatt/m2 2) Detects a wide range of frequencies (800 MHz 2500 Mhz) Mhz is the same as 2.5 Ghz. (Note: There are many antennas and cordless phones that are functioning at >2.5 Ghz and thus, will be missed by this meter. That is why I recommend the Acoustimeter as a first sweep test of your home, office, school etc it has a 200 MHz to 8.0 Ghz frequency range.) 3) Has a highly directional antenna. This means the meter will point you in the direction of the emissions source. Just follow the readings and you ll soon be standing in front of the offending emitting source. 4) Recommended as best meter to test SmartMeters
RF/Microwaves are emitted by things such as WIFI related technology, cell phones, baby monitors, cordless phones, cell towers and whatever is wireless. The antenna is located at the top of the meter. There are 2 switches on the right side that you will use: a. Bottom switch: Off, on without audio, on with audio. b. Top switch: Keep it switch up in the microwatt/m2. If your microwave source max s out the meter at this setting it will be squealing loudly but will show you a 1. If/when this happens, it means the reading is >199 and you need to switch to the bottom allowing you to read up to 1999 microwatts/m2. If your source emissions is >1999, it will be squealing even more loudly but show a 1. In this case, all you know is that the emissions are >1999 microwatts/m2. Yikes! On the top there is a knob. This is the volume control for the squealing. On the left there is a knob for RMS or Peak. ALWAYS keep it on Peak! The RMS is an average reading, but this average reading is very misleading because it averages all the emissions plus the dead time thus giving you the illusion that your exposures are less than they truly are. Average exposure is an interesting thing to know but can be very misleading and is often used to spin the truth about microwave exposure. So do NOT assume LOW right side LED readings mean your environment is safe! For example, many microwave spin writers will says things like A smart meter is only exposing you to microwaves for 3 minutes out of every day what are you worrying about? And honestly, they are telling you the truth. But they are spinning the story and being deceptive. How? Because they add up the high potency 10,000 microbursts you are getting (like a machine gun) and when they add up all those microbursts it totals only 3 minutes. Understand? The same is true for this average right side LED s. So be careful. For example, if you are 2
being exposed to only 1 high burst every 20 seconds, the average will be low because of all the dead time that lies between those 3 burst per minute. In other words: (57 seconds of Zero microwave bursts + 3 seconds of High microwave bursts) divided by a total of 60 seconds can be a very low average.and thus sound misleadingly safe. It is for this reason that I recommend keeping your eyes on the numbers. Also, keep your ears listening for the sound that is corresponding to those numbers. For example, does it sound like a buzz? Or a rat-tat-tat? The rat-tat-tat machine gun firing sound is most likely WiFi. Or does it sound like a buzz? Also, is the sound constant or only happens every so many seconds? If it is happening only a few times a minute, then it is most likely a radar dome (as it swings around) or a wireless device (such as laptop, cell phone, SmartMeter, ipad etc) searching for an antenna that would like to connect with it. Go to this website below, scroll down to the example sound files in the blue box and you ll be able hear the differences: Website: Background hiss: Do not worry. This is meter measuring itself. 2. WiFi: Wireless Fidelity; Wireless internet accessing technology 3. 3G: 3 rd Generation; cell phones and cell towers 4. DECT: Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications; cordless phones 5. TETRA: Terrestrial Trucked Radio; used by private mobile radio users, walkie talkies. Often used by government, military, fire, police etc. 6. GSM Base Station: Global System for Mobile Communications; cell phones and cell towers Note: When you first turn on the meter the numbers will flash quickly and return to zero in a couple seconds. Do not freak! This is normal and NOT measuring your
environmental exposure to microwaves. It only lasts a couple seconds so if your meter is still reading numbers after that initial few seconds of booting on, you are standing in deep pile of microwave doo doo. If the microwave intensity is higher/same outside than inside, then the source emitter is outside. If the microwave intensity is higher inside, then the source emitter is inside. If the microwave intensity is higher on the second floor vs the first floor, then the source emitter is most likely higher (like a cell tower or antennas atop a nearby building). Since cell phones are mini cell towers, you won t get accurate readings if you walk around measuring with a cell phone in your pocket or in the pocket of the person helping you. Microwaves are small, itty bitty waves. The bad news is that means they resonate with itty bitty things like our DNA. The good news is that due to their small size, microwaves are more easily blocked. Concrete block will block a percentage of microwaves. A wood frame house does not block very well. Microwaves move through glass/windows easily. Metal blocks microwaves exceptionally well. Case in point, after I turned off the previously unknown WiFi in my clinic, the microwaves in my clinic went to complete zero even though the microwaves readings outside my clinic were continuous and in the caution range on many days. The only exception to the zero readings throughout my clinic were the microwaves coming into the lobby through the clinic s glass entrance door. But now, with a special metallic film over that glass entrance door, I now have ZERO RF/microwave in my clinic lobby! Sweet! As for the other windows? I have kept those covered with metal shutters for years for security and hurricane reasons. Little did I know how they kept microwaves 4
from seeping into each room via the glass windows! And THAT is reason you will find ZERO microwave readings inside my clinic unless someone s phone activates! I am so happy, grateful and blessed to have such a safe place to work! I know so many others who work in high WiFi environments. Since you most likely can t convince your employer to turn off the WiFi, all the more important that you have the lowest microwave exposures at home and especially, when you are sleeping! And of course, be sure to minimize your cell phone exposures as much as possible. Your final microwave healthy home check: Once you ve done your detective work and removed/blocked as much microwave exposure from your home as possible via turning off WiFi, turning off cell phones, shielding smartmeters, disabling wireless devices that are searching for a WiFi signal and perhaps, given a worst case microwave scenario, even filming windows and painting walls with special products to reduce microwaves entering your home from outside microwave antennas, it is now time for a final home inspection. Turn on the meter. Slowly move around the house, pausing for 3 minutes in each room. Keep an eye on the meter as you slowly scan the room with the antenna being sure to measure high and low and all around. How was your living environment? Hopefully less than 3.4 microwatts/m2. Remember, the lower the better. Currently, my clinic and the downstairs of my home have zero RF/microwaves detected. At this time I am still working on reducing the microwaves emissions on my 2 nd floor. Worst case scenario, if you find that your home has unsafe microwave levels, at the very least make your bedroom a microwave-free safe zone! You can effectively shield your bedroom in a number of ways. Just drop us a call or . 5
If you spend a lot of time in your car, be sure to check out your car as well. I ve learned the hard way that any technology that has wireless capability arrives to you with that wireless technology turned ON and bleeping you periodically with microwave radiation even if you don t use it! For example, I never used the Bluetooth in my car but it was putting out high microwave emissions every 16 seconds! I had to take my car into Honda to have it deactivated. Luckily I had my meter with me. Because after they said all done, I checked with the meter and they were wrong! The Bluetooth was still emitting every 16 seconds! So they went back to work and finally DID deactivate my microwave zapping! Your final healthy person check: Find the best location in your house where the ambient microwaves are the lowest. Place your turned-on cell phone on the table. Place the meter next to the phone. Turn on the meter. Now, stand there and watch the meter. Periodically you will see the meter show a very high signal. This the cell phone asking the towers anyone want to talk to me? What we are doing via this experiment is replicating you simply carrying or wearing your cell phone while it is on..remember, this microwave burst, called the Beacon signal, is you not even using it! And YES, the same thing is going on when your precious child is playing a video game or watching a movie on their cell phone! Pretty scary, eh? Inside, my own cell phone puts out an off-the-chart >6.0 V/m bleep periodically. Yikes! Next, have someone call you. Pretty scary, eh? Now, hold the meter in one hand and the cell phone in the other. Have someone call you again and have a mini conversation with them on your cell phone. Pretty scary, eh? By the way, you will find that the emissions on your phone are HIGHER inside than outside. Why? Because the cell phone has to push harder to get its signal out to the cell tower if it has to fight its way out of your house. So, this is the reason why it is better to use the cell phone outside rather than inside if possible. 6
What to do with the scary mini cell tower you own and carry with you 24/7 (aka: your cell phone)? I admit I own a cell phone. I wish I didn t but I must own one. What do I do to minimize my microwave exposures? 1. Keep the phone on airplane mode as much as possible. There are ZERO emissions on airplane mode. 2. Verizon allows me to forward my calls via a quick trip to the internet. Thus, I am able to keep my phone on airplane mode and forward my calls to my home phone or office or a friend s house etc. 3. Ask about my special carrying case for your cell phone. It greatly reduces microwave emissions while carrying the phone and also while using it. I love mine! 4. NEVER put the cell phone to your head! Always use speaker phone or a headset. And NEVER use Bluetooth! 5. And whatever you do, please don t waste your money and bet your health on some gadget that professes to protect you from your cell phone! If the gadget doesn t change the reading on the RF/Microwave meter, send it back! And honestly, given all the gadgets out there these days, the probability is the gadget does NOT protect you. Remember: You don t get what you expect you get what you inspect! Test! The microwave bottom-line: 1. A desired maximum exposure is less than 3.4 microwatts/m2. Of course, the lower the better! 7
2. Try to stay clear of strong, although infrequent, microbursts I ve tried to keep these directions as simple as possible. If you have any questions, read the official HF35C manual also provided to you. Good luck on your microwave detective work. Please us with your meter experience testimonial at BeckNatMed@gmail.com so we can share your words with others who will be renting the meter after you. We will keep your name private but would like to know the city/state you are in. Thanks in advance for your testimonial. ****** 8
