3 Description of installation of ground loops for vehicle detector General The loop is made of PVC-coated stranded copper wire mm2, heat-resistant to at least 90 degrees Celsius, and is coiled 2 or 3 times depending on the diameter of the loop. 3 coils for diameters up to 12 m, 2 coils for diameters over 12 m. The best result is achieved if the loop and connector are continuous without joins. If this is not possible, it is of the utmost importance that the join is electrically perfect and completely watertight. The connector can be made from the same cable as the loop and shall comprise twisted-pair with at least 10 twists per metre between the loop and the detector. The connector can also be shielded twin cable. Loop size See the section Suggested vehicle loop layout in this instruction manual. Channel for loop Normally, the loop is placed in a channel cut into the road surface. These are normally 5-7mm wide and mm deep. Corners must be truncated. Before the loop is laid the channel must be cleaned, the bottom evened out if necessary to avoid future wear on the cable insulation. When laying the loop be careful not to damage the insulation. If necessary, fix the loop in place before refilling the channel. Before refilling the channel, test the loop with the appropriate vehicle. Loop placement To ensure good function, note the following: Minimum distance to moving metal objects, such as gates and the like: 1.0 metre. Minimum distance to stationary metal objects, such as reinforcing steel and the like: 50 mm. Connections between the loop and the connector or joins must be completely watertight. Defects or damaged insulation result in an unstable magnetic field and unreliable function. Heating cables must not be near or run parallel to the loop. High-voltage cables near the loop can disrupt its function. The channel for the loop must not contain any other cables. The minimum distance to other loops is 1.0 metre. Directionally sensitive loops forming a figure of eight must not be connected to the DB402; the loops must be separated as illustrated below. Min 1,0m A B A B Testing the loop Check that the loop and connector are electrically continuous. A series resistance of 0.5 ohms is normal more than 5 ohms indicates poor contact. It is also important to check the earth insulation of the loop and connector. Resistance to earth, measured at 500 Volts, shall be greater than 10 Megohms (normally 500 Megohms). Other The connector of the loop can be up to 150 metres long, although sensitivity decreases with increasing length. 3

With two individual loop inputs for the preferred function when a vehicle is detected. The DB402 only works together with the EP104 automatic control unit. The vehicle detector has two different frequencies, one for each loop in use. For function configuration, see the instruction manual for the EP104. Installation 1. Cut the power to the EP Attach the DB402 card to the spacers on the EP104 using two M4x6 screws. 3. Connect the cable to the "LOOP" connector as illustrated below. 4. 5 Connections If two loops are used the one with the larger diameter shall be connected to input SL1. Note that installation must be conducted by a qualified electrician and the power must be cut when connecting the connectors. 1. Terminal block no on the EP104 must be jumpered when using the DB402 unless a photocell is used. 2. The connector from the loop must be twisted pair with at least ten twists per metre. 3. If only one loop is used connect it to SL1 as illustrated (SL1=Signal Loop 1). 4. If two loops are used connect them to SL1 and SL2 as illustrated (SL2=Signal Loop 2). 5. If three loops are used with two loops providing the same function, these two shall be connected in series using input NC which is a potential-free contact. It is important to remember that the loops must be of equal diameter to achieve reliable functionality. Indicators There are two yellow LEDs on the detector card. The left LED is for loop 1 and the right LED is for loop 2. A constant LED indicates that the loops are oscillating and are most probably functioning. No LED lit indicates a fault in the loop. Note that despite a lit LED the loop can be malfunctioning. The best way to check the loop's function is to check the readouts from the channels on the EP104 automatic control unit.
