Section 2 INSTALLATION GENERAL The following information is designed to give the technician guidance in planning installations and efficiently troubleshooting problems with the WSI AV-300/350. If there are any problems or difficulties experienced in installing or maintaining the WSI AV-300/350, please contact WSI Customer Support (see Factory Service Policies). RS-232 CONNECTIONS RS-232 connections require both transmit and receive signals. Twisted shielded pairs or triplets should be used. Excessive EMI from other aircraft equipment penetrating these lines can cause data errors or dropouts on the communication port. Unused RS-232 receive inputs should be tied to ground. RS-422 CONNECTIONS The RS-422 port shares common hardware with the COM1 RS-232 port. Generally the RS-422 receiver port should not be connected. The RS-422 transmit port may be used to connect an additional display, even when the COM1 RS-232 port is connected; however the RS-422 receive port should never be connected. SATELLITE ANTENNA INSTALLATION Structural substantiation of the antenna location is important and the responsibility of the installing agency. REMOTE CONTROL ANTENNA PLACEMENT EVALUATION The remote control antenna should be placed so that it has an unobstructed line-of-sight view of all locations where the remote control may be used. Metal obstructions particularly will cause substantial degradation of the RF signal between the remote control and the AV-350 receiver. It is recommended that candidate locations for the remote control antenna be tested before permanently mounting the antenna. The following steps may be used to confirm the candidate remote control antenna location: NOTE: Sirius Radio Receiver must be activated prior to performing this procedure. 1. Temporarily mount the antenna in the candidate location. 2. Turn on the AV-350 receiver and tune to a station so that audio can be heard. 3. Sit in one of the locations where the remote control may be used. 4. Change the station by pressing the channel up or down button. 5. Confirm that the new station is identified on the remote control display. 6. Confirm that the radio station was change by listening to the audio. 7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each location where the remote control might be used Rev. 03, 13 May WSI AV-300/350 Installation Manual

RECEIVER ANTENNA CONNECTIONS Do not over-tighten the connector or internal damage to the receiver or the antenna could result. The connector on the receiver and antenna is hard mounted. If a connector turns in its mounting, it needs to be repaired. POWER INPUT LINE AND GROUND RETURN Ensure that the receiver is well grounded to an effective airframe ground. Poor grounds or ground loops can cause intermittent operation or alternator noise in the headphones. If there is any question about the effectiveness of the ground, route the return line to the battery terminal. AUDIO The AV-350 audio output is designed to operate into a 600-ohm load. If an audio port must be shared with another audio input, series resistors should be used in both lines to allow sufficiently high audio volume for both audio inputs. Usually 220 to 470 ohm resistors are satisfactory. Connection to an audio panel without internal amplification may require a supplemental amplifier. Low audio is usually caused by a greater than normal load on the line due to multiple inputs to one audio port. A dedicated audio ground return line is provided to eliminate possible audio whine. Connect the audio return to the ground for the audio port to which the AV-350 receiver is connected. If no return ground is provided, ground to the case of the audio panel. The audio line from the AV-350 receiver to the audio panel should be shielded, with the shield grounded at the audio panel. NOTE: All AV-350 audio installations that have audio available to the flight crew must have an audio mute switch installed, and have the AV-350 audio suppression connected to all higher priority equipment. The audio mute switch should be installed in a position easily accessible to the pilot. This will allow the flight crew to quickly MUTE the AV-350 audio when needed. The AV-350 audio suppression line must be connected to higher priority systems to prevent the AV- 350 audio from interfering with communication, navigation, and safety systems. All other systems audio alerts are higher priority than AV-350 audio. INSTALLATION IN A SEVERE EMI ENVIRONMENT Proper grounding of the AV-300/350 receiver is essential. If the EMI environment is anticipated to be severe, route the cable bundles through an overall shield (in addition to the shields specified in the wiring diagrams). The outer shield should be terminated to aircraft ground at the receiver end of the cable bundle Rev. 03, 13 May WSI AV-300/350 Installation Manual

GENERAL INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS The WSI AV-300/350 should be installed according to this manual, AC ( ) and AC ( ). Cable harnesses and mechanical supports must be fabricated by the installing agency to these requirements. This Section contains interconnect diagrams, mounting dimensions and other information and tips pertaining to installation. Refer to Section 3 page 47 for checkout instructions. GETTING STARTED Prior to beginning the system installation, the installer is strongly encouraged to read these installation procedures completely. Planning the entire process ahead of time will help avoid problems once the installation has begun. Exercise care when unpacking the equipment. Make a visual inspection of the unit for evidence of damage incurred during shipment. If a claim for damage is to be made, save the shipping container to substantiate the claim. The claim should be filed with the transportation company. Retain the container and packaging material after the equipment has been removed should equipment storage or reshipment become necessary. CLAMPING AND ROUTING WIRES Wire bundles should be secured approximately every 12 inches (30cm) with nylon strapping or other appropriate materials. The wire bundles should be secured to the airframe at regular intervals to prevent any interference with control cables and to prevent wire chafing. Route the wires away from critical circuits. Route the audio wires separately from the power lines to minimize audio interference. RECEIVER GROUNDING The AV-300/350 receiver case is electrically conductive. The preferred method of grounding the receiver is through the mounting screws. If it is not practical to provide an electrical connection between the airframe ground and the case of the receiver, then a ground strap must be installed from pin 1 of the communications and power connector (P1) to a nearby airframe ground. If required, attach a 22 AWG ground strap (item 1) from pin 1 of P1 to a nearby airframe ground. The ground strap should be no longer than 18 inches (45.7cm). CABLE SHIELDS Dress all cable shields back so they are electrically bonded to the communication and power connector (P1) back shell. Unless otherwise specified, cable shields should be grounded to airframe ground only at the AV-300/350 receiver end of the cable. SATELLITE ANTENNA PLACEMENT Use the following guidelines to ensure a suitable placement for the AV-300/350 satellite antenna: a) The satellite antenna must be mounted on an external top surface of the aircraft Rev. 03, 13 May WSI AV-300/350 Installation Manual

b) The satellite antenna should be mounted so that it is within 15 of level when the aircraft is in straight and level flight. c) The satellite antenna should be located 36 inches or more away from the nearest transmitting antenna. d) The AV-300/350 satellite antenna requires a ground plane to achieve optimal performance. Metal aircraft should have a good bond between the airframe and the AV- 300/350 antenna to provide an adequate antenna ground plane. Satellite antenna installations on composite aircraft require the installation of metallic foil strips, to the inside of the aircraft, to provide the antenna ground plane. e) The satellite antenna should have a clear (no aircraft obstructions) line-of-sight view of the sky above 60 degrees of elevation. f) See Satellite Antenna Installation on page 43 for additional information. REMOTE CONTROL ANTENNA PLACEMENT Use the following guidelines to ensure a suitable placement for the AV-350 remote control antenna: a) The remote control antenna cable should be at least 18 inches long. b) The remote control antenna must be mounted inside the aircraft. c) The remote control antenna should be located to maximize reception from the remote control. First determine all locations within the aircraft where an occupant may utilize the remote control, and then position the antenna so that it has reliable reception from those locations. The antenna may be able to receive signals through non-metallic objects and surfaces; however metallic or electrically conductive obstructions should be avoided. d) The remote control antenna may be mounted to metallic structures; however poor reception may result at locations where the mounting surface obstructs the view of the antenna. e) Avoid locating the remote control antenna inside the cabin within 12 of any external antenna, especially in composite aircraft or other aircraft with non-metallic skin. If it is necessary to mount the remote control antenna within 12 of an external antenna be sure to carefully evaluate the AV-350 and the system associated with the other antenna for possible RF interference. f) The AV-350 receiver may be mounted prior to mounting the remote control antenna so that candidate locations may be evaluated. It is a good idea to evaluate the proposed location both before and after permanently affixing the antenna. g) The remote control antenna may be mounted in any orientation for optimal performance. h) See Remote Control Antenna Installation on page 46 for additional information Rev. 03, 13 May WSI AV-300/350 Installation Manual

RECEIVER INSTALLATION RECEIVER MOUNTING The AV-300/350 receiver is normally installed in the avionics bay. The receiver mounting location must be structurally adequate. The supporting structure and attachments must be able to withstand the appropriate loads for the type of aircraft and the location within the fuselage. Refer to regulatory and industry guidance for current information. The AV-300/350 receiver may be mounted either vertically or horizontally. Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors. See Figure 2 on page 33 for the AV-300/350 receiver dimensions Mount the receiver in an accessible location using four 8-32 stainless steel Phillips pan head screws tightened to 30 inch pounds using self-locking retainers.
