Before connecting an external antenna to an HP ProCurve Wireless Access Point, be sure that the access point radio power levels are set in accordance with local regulatory requirements. For the latest information, go to APPLICATION Designed for wireless LAN service, the HP ProCurve J8999A is a directional patch array enclosed in a UV-stable weatherproof radome. The focused radiation pattern may be used to extend point-to-point link coverage or to provide targeted sector coverage in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. ANTENNA LOCATION The J8999A may be mounted in an interior or exterior location. A lineof-sight signal path works best for point-to-point links. Although 5 GHz signals penetrate cubical dividers and interior partitions with little attenuation, reinforced block walls, banks of metal cabinets, glass walls, or steel shelving may attenuate signals or cause multipath, a condition where reflected signals interfere with the primary signal. Because the antenna beamwidth is narrow, it is important to aim the antenna accurately during installation to provide optimum gain and best performance. ASSEMBLY AND MOUNTING The HP ProCurve J8999A is supplied with a universal articulating mount that accepts mast diameters up to 2 inches (5.1 cm) or mounts on a wall. This mount is especially designed to provide wide-range articulation in both the azimuth and elevation planes.

(See Figure 1 for wall mount and Figure 2 for pole / mast mount.) 1. Attach the antenna mount (3) to the exposed studs on the back of the antenna using the four SS / nylon hex nuts (4). 2. Secure the articulating arm (2) to the antenna mount (3) using a 1-1/4 machine screw (5), SS split lock washer (6), flat washer (7), and SS hex nut (8) as shown. 3. For mounting on a wall: Or, a) Using the wall / mast mount (1) as a template to mark hole locations, drill four 3/16 diameter pilot holes. b) Install wall anchors (9). c) Install the wall / mast mount using four ¾ SS machine screws (10). For mounting on a pole or mast: a) Attach the two hose clamps (11) to the wall / mast mount (1). b) Encircle the pole with each clamp and tighten. 4. Attach the antenna assembly to the wall/mast mount using a 1-1/4 machine screw (5), lock washer (6), and flat washer (7) as shown. Use the screw to attach the free end of the articulating arm to the mount and then secure it in place with an SS hex nut (8). 5. Loosen the pivot screws (1-1/4 machine screws (5)) as needed to position the antenna for desired azimuth and elevation. When the antenna is fully adjusted, tighten all hardware securely. 3 LIGHTNING ARRESTER WARNING: PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION REQUIRED: Prior to installing or using this device, consult with a professional installer trained in RF installation and knowledgeable in local regulations including building and wiring codes, safety, channel, power, indoor/outdoor restrictions, and license requirements for the intended country. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that installation and use comply with local safety and radio regulations. Warning: Surge protection and grounding: When connecting an outdoor antenna make sure that proper lightning surge protection and grounding precautions are taken in accordance with local electrical codes. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, fire, equipment damage, or a voided warranty. The HP ProCurve hardware warranty does not cover damage caused by static discharge or lightning strike. For external applications, it is strongly recommended that you install a lightning arrester (HP J8996A or equivalent) for each port of the antenna. Lightning arresters must be purchased separately. For best results, install the lightning arrester in close proximity to a low-resistance ground connection near where the coaxial cable enters the building or attaches to an AP. For exterior installations, use weatherproof coax connectors with a suitable mastic or rubberized tape to prevent water incursion. See Photo 1. To connect the lightning arrester to the ground, use a very short and direct run of #8 solid copper wire, or equivalent. Ensure that the other end of the grounding wire connects to a true earth ground according to the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and/or all pertinent local codes. Lightning arresters require periodic inspection and replacement. Provide drip loops in cables to prevent water from entering the building or AP. See Photo 2.
