The measured Power Influence and Noise values will display and the unit will constantly refresh the test until the Stop soft key is pressed. 10. Launch the POTS Dialer to go On Hook when finished. Calculating Balance Balance is a calculated indication of the quality of the telephone cable pair and the degree to which the Tip and Ring conductors are electrically the same in their ability to cancel Noise. Balance is traditionally calculated by subtracting a measured Noise value from a measured Power Influence value. It is only a calculation and is not necessarily accurate. Copper test meters can actually measure a cable pair s overall balance with a Longitudinal Balance test.

6 A Longitudinal Balance measurement is always preferred over a calculated Balance value. Calculating Balance You can have the HST-3000 calculate Balance by doing the following: 1. Perform a Power Influence and Noise measurement as shown previously. 2. On the results screen, the HST-3000 will automatically calculate the Balance value if the Power Influence measurement is at least 40 dbrnc. 3. Press the Results soft key to Save or Clear the data. Note: CenturyLink standard for acceptable Power Influence is less than or equal to 80 dbrnc. Acceptable Noise is 0 to 20 dbrnc. The resulting Balance (PI Noise = Balance) should calculate to a value greater than or equal to 60 db. Measuring loop loss The HST-3000 can send and receive voiceband tones to measure loop loss, to perform a 3-tone slope test, and dial the telephone switch to receive a milliwatt tone. To access the Loss Measurement function 1. Access the Copper Measurements menu 2. Press the 6 key. The Loss Meter menu appears. 3. Press the Display soft key. 4.
