About the FED III The 3M Dynatel Far End Device III (FED III) is an accessory device to the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS. When used with the Dynatel 965AMS tester, the FED III helps improve work efficiency by automatically providing some necessary functions at the far-end of the pair under test during pair qualification testing. The 965AMS tester controls the FED III using DTMF signaling. The FED III supports the following functions for the 965AMS tester Auto Test feature: 6 ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+ and VDSL2 Wideband Tests Loop Resistance (shorts Tip to Ring) Resistive Balance (shorts Tip-Ring to Ground) Single Tone & Sweep Loss (sends loss tone)
Longitudinal Balance testing with IEEE termination (Std ) Optional second pair connection Central Office isolate The FED III is contained in a plastic case with the following features: The power key turns the unit on or off. The tone key sends an identification tone that can be found using a tone probe. The FED III will also emit a solid tone when the test leads are shorted together allowing this mode to be used for continuity testing. 1 1/2 0 The battery key will indicate the battery strength of the four AA alkaline batteries when the button is pressed. The chart below will assist in determining the battery strength: LED 1 > 75% 1/2 > 50% 0 > 25% Battery Strength 0 Flashing < 25% (Replace batteries immediately or before next use.) 7
F1 F2 F1 and F2 are reserved for future use. PAIR 1 GND STATUS CO PAIR 2 The status LED flashes when unit is on. The test leads are terminated at the top of the FED III case. The FED III uses seven test leads that connect to the field side of pair 1, CO side of pair 1, ground and a second pair. Installing/Replacing the Battery Loosen the four screws at the corners of the battery cover on the front of the unit using a phillips screwdriver. Remove the cover and remove batteries from the battery holder. Discard the removed batteries per applicable regulations. Place new batteries into the holder. Press the cover into place and tighten the four retaining screws. 8
Basic Operation The FED III when used with the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS will qualify: POTS Inactive test POTS Inactive and Active tests on working service Wideband Inactive test Wideband Inactive tests on active service Getting Started Gather as much information about the cable and pairs as possible (cable and pair number/s, wire gauge, general layout of the cable network, approximate length of the pair, cross box and workout terminal location and the type of service to be tested). It s always a good idea to pretest the pairs with the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS, POTS, AUTO Inactive, full test before hooking up the FED III. All commands for the FED III are made on the pair under test. If the pair has an open, the FED III can t hear the commands. How It Works After the FED III has been placed on a pair and the 965AMS tester hooked up at the other end, the 965AMS tester AUTO test function will automatically command the FED III to wake up and program the FED III for the appropriate INACTIVE or WIDEBAND test routines. When the test is finished, and the 965AMS tester has been backed out of the AUTO test program, the 965AMS tester will turn the FED III off automatically. 9
Steps to Test With FED III and 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS 1. Connect the test leads. There are four color-coded sets of test ports on the FED III: Green - connects to ground Blue port - connects to pair 1 (primary test pair) Optional: Red port - connects to pair 2 (secondary test pair) Yellow port - connects to the CO or subscriber side of the working service. Each pair of test leads has a black and red set of test clips. The black always connects to tip and red connects to ring. There are two types of hookups, single-pair or two-pair. The CO disconnect option is normally used on working services. The choice of hookups depends on the application the FED III will be used for. The chart below may help. Test Application Single vacant pair POTS or WB testing Single working pair POTS or WB 2 vacant pair POTS or WB testing 2 pair testing with the primary pair working POTS or WB Green Clip Gnd Blue Banded Pair 1 (Primary Pair) X X Red Banded Pair 2 (Second Pair) Yellow Banded CO or Subscriber Side X X X X X X X X X X FED FED II, FED III 10
Once the test pair(s) has been located, the FED III can be connected to the pair(s) at the initial work point. Normally this pair(s) would be opened at the pedestal or splice point. The FED III is connected to the test pair(s) in the direction of the tests. The 3M Far End Device III can also be used on an active pair. In the figure below the FED III is placed in series between the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS and the CO on an active pair. RED GRN BLK Ring 1 Ground Tip 1 2. Press the Power Key The 3M Far End Device III can be turned on manually (by the user) by pressing the red power key. The FED III is also powered up remotely by the 965AMS unit at the beginning of the auto test sequence. 3. Press the Tone Key Whether the FED III is turned on or turned off you have the option to send tone to the far-end by pressing the tone key. If tone is activated the FED III begins sending an identification (ID) tone on pair 1 (blue-banded test leads). The ID tone, when applied to the pair under test, can be used to identify the pair at the other end of the cable. When the FED III is sending the ID tone mode, it can also be used to measure continuity. The FED III will produce a continuous tone if the resistance between the black and red test clip is 1,000 ohms or less. This feature can be used to positively identify a pair if the tip and ring at the other end has been shorted together. 11
4. Connect the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS to Begin Testing Drive to the other end of the primary test pair and connect the 965AMS tester to begin testing. Connect the red to ring, black to tip and the green to ground. If you will be using one of the autotests then the 965AMS tester will be controlling the FED III. If you will be performing manual tests then refer to the following section. Manual Testing The 3M Far End Device III can be used manually for additional applications. It can be controlled using the dial pad of the 3M Dynatel Advanced Modular System 965AMS. The FED III will have to be turned on remotely and a security password must be used before entering DTMF application commands. When you are finished testing using the FED III, it should be turned off to conserve its battery. Manual Testing>Initializing the FED III When the FED III Tone key has been pressed, pair ID tone is being transmitted. You will first need to turn the tone off with the 965AMS tester by holding down any DTMF key for more than five seconds. 1. Press the Tone key on the 965AMS tester and send a 577Hz ID tone to turn the FED III on. 2. Press the Dial key and (using DTMF) dial the security password Two DTMF tones will be heard on the 965AMS speaker confirming acceptance of the password. 3. When communication with the FED III is active then you can command the FED III for testing. See the next section. 12
