Install the relay on the DIN rail as shown above. Push the SEL-849 towards the rail until the bottom clip latches and the relay clicks into place. Remove Relay From a DIN Rail To remove the relay, use a small flat-bladed screw driver or other similar tool. Insert the tool into the latching clip and pry it towards the SEL-849 relay. The clip slides away from the DIN rail, releasing it. 4

Relay Dimensions Figure 2 SEL-849 Relay Dimension Drawings i8051k Figure 2 shows the dimensions of the relay to cover all the ordering options. Please note that the actual relay may differ based on the options included. The wiring terminal blocks are labeled A through H, as shown in the drawing and on the relay. HMI If you are using the SEL-3421 or SEL-3422 Motor Relay HMI, connect the HMI module to the HMI port of the relay with an SEL-C627M cable or equivalent. The HMI module is powered from the relay. Note that it takes 5 10 seconds for the HMI to come up with the default display. The SEL-3422 must be connected to the SEL-849 for hazardous locations suitability and is part of ATEX certification No. DEMKO 17 ATEX 1832X. The SEL-3421 is not rated for use in hazardous locations applications. Use the HMI to control, meter, or monitor the motor. Refer to Section 8: Human Machine Interface, in the SEL-849 Instruction Manual for more details on HMI functions and operation. NOTE: Make sure the relay, HMI, and SELBOOT firmware revisions are compatible. Refer to Appendix A: Firmware and Manual Versions in the SEL-849 Instruction Manual. 7
Relay Communications The SEL-849 includes a built-in web server for configuration and control. Simply connect an Ethernet cable between your computer and the SEL-849 PORT2A or 2B to establish communications. Do not connect your computer to the HMI port. Refer to Section 3: PC Interface, in the SEL-849 Instruction Manual, for more details on the web server connection. Computer Connection Steps 1. Connect your computer and the relay using an Ethernet cable, as shown in the connection diagram. Connect the Ethernet port of your computer to the Ethernet port (PORT 2) of the SEL-849. Use an RJ45 Ethernet cable, such as an SEL-C627M cable, which is a double-shielded, 600 V MCC-rated, category 5e Ethernet cable. SEL-849 HMI PORT2A 2. Turn on both your computer and the relay. (Check the LED status on the SEL-849 for connectivity.) Cat 5e Cable (SEL-C627M or equivalent) 3. Open a web browser and type the default IP address, , in the address bar. 4. Select 2AC: View and Change from the Access Level drop-down menu. 5. Type in the default ACC and 2AC passwords, OTTER and TAIL, respectively. 8
6. Click Login. The following settings screen appears on your computer. Use the different menus to navigate, monitor, set, and control the relay. Meter shows corresponding meter reports. Reports contains subcategories for each of the reports stored in the relay. You can view event reports, SER, load profile, etc. Control gives you information about the present targets and the control of remote bits and output contacts. Relay Status displays the Relay Word bits, self tests and SELOGIC counters information. System allows you to export or import settings and download firmware. Instruction Manual can be used to download the manual to the PC. Click Settings to modify the needed settings and click the Submit Changes button to download settings to the relay. 9
Typical Application Example and Connections A typical application example is shown below. Numerous other current- and voltage-based protection features can be individually enabled. Additional starter configurations are supported including reversing, two speed, and star-delta. These are described in the instruction manual. Consider a 60 HP three-phase induction motor with a rated voltage of 400 V, rated full load current (FLA) of 80 A and a service factor of The application below uses NEMA 20 for trip class and a full voltage nonreversing starter configuration as shown in Figure 3. This application does not have ac voltage inputs. Note 2: All contact inputs shown are externally wetted. Figure 3 Connection Diagram for Factory-Default I/O Assignments Full-Voltage Nonreversing Starter (STARTRTY := FVNR) With Ungrounded Motor Neutral Typically, a relay out of the box comes with factory-default settings. Alternatively, factory-default settings can be restored by performing DEVICE RESET using the web server as described under Relay Communications. Following are the setting changes required for this application, starting from the factory-default settings. NOTE: Depending on the particular application more setting changes may be necessary, including for the behavior of the SEL-3421 HMI (if used). The settings mentioned below are for the application used in this example. Basic Settings Category Setting Name Setting Range Setting Prompt Setting Value for the Example Application Listed Full Load Amps A FLA1 80 Service Factor SERFACTR 1.12 Trip Class 10_NEMA, 20_NEMA, 30_NEMA, 5_IEC, 10_IEC, 20_IEC, 30_IEC, NONE TRIPCLAS 20_NEMA 10
With these settings, the SEL-849 provides the following protection features for this application. Thermal Overload Protection (49): The relay will trip on overload as specified by the Trip Class (20_NEMA) and Service Factor (1.12). An overload warning will be 85 percent of the TCU (thermal capacity used) trip level. The overload reset level is set at 75 percent of the TCU trip level. The relay trips when either stator or rotor TCU reaches 100 percent. Current Unbalance Protection (46): The current unbalance trip pickup is set at 20 percent with a delay of 5 seconds, and the current unbalance warning pickup is set at 10 percent with a delay of 10 seconds. These settings are in per unit of the FLA setting. Phase Reversal Protection (47): The relay will trip approximately 0.5 seconds after a motor start is initiated on detecting an incorrect phase rotation. Output contacts for this application are configured as mentioned on the figure. OUT01 is already set and energizes the contactor coil to start the motor or de-energizes it to stop the motor on a trip condition or STOP command or failure to start condition. OUT04 contact closes on alarm condition or when the user logs into the relay. OUT02 and OUT03 are not used in this application. Input contacts are wired as shown in the figure. IN01 provides the status of the contactor or breaker. IN04 and IN03 are used to provide pushbutton inputs for starting and stopping of the motor, respectively. IN06 is used to select the control mode, i.e., Local or Remote. IN04 and IN03 are pulse inputs that would start/stop a motor. If the optional HMI is connected, START/STOP pushbuttons on the HMI take precedence over IN04 and IN03, respectively. Similarly, the LOCAL/REMOTE pushbutton on the HMI takes precedence over IN06. If the relay is in remote mode, START/STOP can be done from the communications port (serial or Ethernet). Once the settings are completed, enter and save them in the relay using the web server as described in Relay Communications. 11
