Torque and temperature measurements are just some of the applications. All systems are equipped with an inductive power supply between the Stator and Rotor Units which eliminates the need for any battery on the shaft. However, in special cases, each rotor unit can be powered with battery if required. The telemetry systems offer flexible design options even when space is very limited. We offer a design service for individual measurement requirements. 3

4 IPT - Intelligent Power Transmission AXON's Intelligent Power Transmission (IPT) offers unique flexibility compared to other telemetry systems. The inductive power supply is monitored dynamically and constantly adjusted to maintain optimum operating range - this eliminates age and temperature related variations in performance. In addition, due to the design of control loop, the stator transmission coil can be formed to any shape or dimension from a few centimetres to 30cm or even more with no loss of signal quality. For automotive drive shaft applications, which can have very large displacements due to suspension travel, specialised installations can be required Thanks to the wide capacity of the inductive power supply, the transmission coil can easily be designed as an oval shape. Previous complex adjustments to the transmission coil is no longer necessary, both, inductive and data transmission work effectively over a wide range. In tightly enclosed environments, the transmission coil can be connected to the Stator Unit with extension wires up to 150mm. As the sensor element is not sensitive to metalic components, the system can cope with many difficult applications - even gearbox measurements. In this case the Stator Unit can be mounted to the outside of the gearbox housing, while the transmission coil is mounted inside - the data transmission is not affected by the metalic environment no by oil flow. 4

5 The basic system components AXON are constantly working to implement new system designs to meet customers' individual requirements. A lot of thought has gone into the design and all components within one product type use the same carrier frequency. This means that any existing Control Unit, Stator or Rotor Unit(s) can be swapped and operated without the need to any change settings or calibration. 6 1-Channel AXON J1 - analogue 1-channel telemetry - strain gauge or - temperature Thousands of the 1-channel telemetry AXON J1 are now being used all over the world for wide range of applications. A tiny rotor PCB is installed directly to the test object, it then acquires the data and transmits the signal to a stationary receiver unit. The signal is processed and is then available as an analogue voltage signal which can be used for further data analysis. The simple installation and the ability to supply the rotor inductively, or by battery, makes this system a very versatile solution for rotating applications. Different Stator and Rotor Units are available for the J1 which can measure strain gauge (torque, force, pressure etc.) and temperature (thermocouple Type K) signals. All systems have three basic configurations: - The ring stator, suitable for most applications with shaft diameters up to 30cm (optional larger diameters are also possible). Power can be supplied reliably and consistently to individual vehicle shafts, even with very large displacements. - The pickup stator, designed for very large shafts, allows easy installation, as no large transmission coil / ring needs to be mounted. - The receiver stator option for a battery supplied Rotor Unit. If a battery is preferred to supply the Rotor Unit, the compact JX- SB01 can be used as a receiver unit without inductive supply in conjunction with a wire antenna in almost any conditions. Rotor Units are available as chip version in a robust aluminum housing as well as a flexible PCB for tight environments. Both have a operating temperature range of up to -40 C C! 6

10 1-Channel - Strain gauge AXON J1D - digital 1-channel telemetry The proven reliability of the AXON J series in miniature. The J1D has a higher signal-bandwidth,of 2,5 Khz, than the J1 and a sampling rate of 10 ksa/s and an auto zero function which works over the full measurement range, makes it even more powerful. It can be switched beween the original and the offset-corrected signal anytime during the measurement. The rear housing features a self-locking power switch to prevent accidental disconnection of the measurement system. Additionally a waterproof connector (Ip68) fitted to the Stator Unit is standard for all of the digital systems. The J1D Rotor Unit has either an aluminium housing or a flexible Rotor Unit which in tightly enclosed installations, can be wrapped around the shaft. The operating temperature range of up to +140 C makes the J1D suitable for almost any conditions. 10

14 1-channel AXON J1DB - Digital 1-channel telemetry with power monitoring - strain gauge with inductive power monitoring Transfer of a single measurement channel of rotating objects is one of the most telemetry applications in automotive and mechanical engineering. Due to IPT, AXON s intelligent inductive power supply, battery powered shafts are a thing of the past. As in conventional single channel telemetry systems, the verification of energy reserves on the Rotor Unit is very difficult or even impossible, the J1DB-system transmits the value of inductively coupled power supply voltage of the Rotor Unit on a seperate channel. The Control Unit has two outputs: The first channel supplies the amplified strain gauge measurement. The second channel transmits the inductive coupled voltage on the Rotor Unit by a factor of 1:3. Thus, the quality of the inductive power transfer can be tested and monitored after the installation of the shaft even during the measurement process. Changes in the supplied voltage, e.g., due to operational axially or radially displacements of the shaft can be observed and evaluated by the dynamic transmission of its value. The Rotor Units are available as chip version in aluminum housing as well as a flexible printed circuit board. With a temperature range of up to -40 C C in continuous operation (without thermal encapsulation) the J1DB can be used in virtually any situation. 14

18 2-Channel - Strain gauge AXON J2D - digital 2-channel-telemetry The digital two channel system simultaneously measures and transmits the signals from two strain gauge full bridges. The amplified signals are provided by the Control Unit for any further analysis as an analogue voltage signal. The sensitivities of the two channels can be independently adjusted over a wide range. This results in a compact and efficient 2- channel measurement solution. 18

22 2-Channel AXON J2DT - digital 2-channel telemetry - Strain gauge and - temperature The simultaneous measurement of a strain gauge signal, together with a temperature channel has shown to be very useful. The J2DT was developed to meet these requirements. The temperature is measured with high precision (see J1T and J4T) and reproduced together with the signal of the strain gauge measurement by the control unit as a voltage signal. With the recording of temperature at the strain gauge, for example, any existing temperature drift can be eliminated in the data evaluation. If the connections for the thermocouple are bridged on the Rotor Unit, the internal temperature of the rotor electronics will be measured. When carrying out any temperature critical strain gauge measurements, the internal operating temperature of the Rotor Unit can be monitored with this method. 22

26 1-Channel - temperature AXON J1T - digital 1-channel telemetry for temperatures The 1-channel temperature system J1T has linearization suitable for type K thermocouples (NiCrNi). Over a measuring range from -80 C to +715 C is the measurement uncertainty is only ± 1 C! This precision is achieved by the fact that the slow temperature signal is sampled at a high rated (10 ksa/s) and after 64 measurements, a mean value is calculated. As with all other J Series Systems, the J1T is very easy to install and provides very reliable and accurate measurement data even when used in harsh environments. 26

30 4-Channel - temperature AXON J4T - digital 4-channel telemetry for temperatures The AXON J4T telemetry system combines the smallest possible design with extreme robustness, it is designed for everyday testing. Both, the stator and the rotor unit are sealed against dust and water ingress (excluding solder pads). Up to four thermocouples can be connected to the lightweight rotor unit (only 16g) which can be used for both inductive and battery operation without additional modules. The automatic linearisation of the measured values over the range from -80 C to +715 C ensures the measurement error is less than 1 C. The signals are available as an analogue voltage (10mV/ C) from the control unit. Cold-junction compensation and a sensor break detection are installed. The system supplies 3easurements per second per channel. Each of the 35 measured values is the mean of 64 individual measurements, which are recorded at intervals of 450 µs. This is one of the reasons why the AXON J4T provides the highest level of accuracy and reliability. 30

34 Torqueshafts Torque-shafts - installation - calibration In addition to telemetry systems AXON Systems can also provide ready to use torque transducers. The careful design of the components is reflected in the reliability of the AXON transducers. The strain gauges are installed with a hot glue method which guarantees reliable results even at high ambient temperatures. Additionally, the final glass fibre bonding of the structure using only the highest quality materials ensure reliable data under almost any of the harshest of conditions. Individual positioning allows measurements even under difficult physical conditions. By using an inductive power supply to the Rotor Unit, it is possible to encapsulate the complete application in a high-strength composite fibre material which protects the electronics and sensors against water, dirt and mechanical damage. The complex covering method also provides protection for long-term measurements or abuse tests and ensures optimal performance of the transducers. In addition to the highest quality manufacturing standards, we also strive to ensure the shortest possible delivery time. A set of transducers is generally ready to ship within 2 weeks. Even shorter delivery times are possible on request. We also offer an installation service for flanges and any other rotating components. As well as the application of torque transducers, also temperature transducers can be manufactured. All transducers are individually planned in detail as to the positioning of the instrumentation and calibration with our customers. 35 EMC-tested All of the AXON J Series systems transmit the inductive power in the lower khz-range. This ensures that the energy is distributed only to the designated area i.e., to the immediate vicinity of the transmission area. AXON system have been tested by Independent EMC test laboratories and all the telemetry systems can be used safely in any environment without influencing any other electronic equipment. By way of a reliable capacitive coupling any external electromagnetic influences are virtually eliminated. Measurements in hybrid electric vehicles and other high-voltage devices are possible without interference. Original Measurement AXON J1 35
