1 Maria de Soria-Santacruz Pich Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Room Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA (617) EDUCATION PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics, January 2014 Dissertation: Controlled Precipitation of Energetic Van Allen Belt Protons by Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron (EMIC) Waves: Scientific and Engineering Implications Dissertation Committee: Prof. Manuel Martinez-Sanchez (advisor), Dr. Gregory Ginet, Prof. David Miller, Prof. Jeffrey Hoffman, Prof. Kerri Cahoy. M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics, June 2011 Thesis title: Radiation of VLF/ELF Waves from a Magnetospheric Tether Thesis advisor: Prof. Manuel Martinez-Sanchez Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics, June 2009 Received the National Prize for Excellence in University Academic Performance, awarded by the Government of Spain to the best students of each discipline around the country that have most brilliantly completed their undergraduate studies. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE NASA Living with a Star (LWS) and UCAR Visiting Scientist Program, Boulder, CO Heliophysics Summer School, July 2013 The Summer School focused on the physics of space weather events, from the Sun to the atmospheres, ionospheres and magnetospheres of the different planets in the solar system. The School was based on lectures, recitations and laboratories given by experts from all over the world. Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA VLF Group, Electrical Engineering Department Visiting Student Researcher, June 2012-August 2012 Investigated on the generation and propagation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the magnetosphere and their interaction with high-energy radiation belt particles. Contributed in two projects, the

2 Maria de Soria-Santacruz Pich 2 first related to growth of EMIC in the presence of cold plasma density irregularities, and the second related to man-made emissions using in-situ VLF antennae with the purpose of remediating the Van Allen belts. / University Nanosatellite Program - 7 Science and Payload Lead of the TERSat Satellite, December 2010-June 2012 TERSat (Trapped Energetic Radiation Satellite) is a small educational satellite, under the University Nanosatellite Program from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), being designed to deploy a 5-meter dipole antenna and use it to emit VLF (whistler) waves capable of scattering the high-energy electrons of the Van Allen Belts. Primary duties included development of the science and design of the VLF antenna, and mentoring of a group of 3 to 5 students involved in the project. Defended the project and design at a Systems Concept Review (SCR), Systems Requirements Review (SRR) and Preliminary Design Review (PDR). GMV Aerospace and Defense, Madrid, Spain Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Department Intern, July 2007-September 2009 Worked in the Galileo Project (European navigation satellite system). Designed and implemented critical software for the Orbit Synchronization Processing Facility (OSPF) and the Integrity Processing Facility (IPF). OSPF is responsible for generating the contents of the Galileo navigation message (ephemeris, clock correction parameters, ionospheric correction models, etc.), while IPF determines the Galileo integrity information for the different services. Community of Ariane Cities (CVA), Madrid, Spain Summer School, July 2008-August 2008 Cooperated with EADS-CASA in the development of a new launch vehicle for the European Space Agency (ESA) using extreme materials. Had an engineering role and coordinated a group of 7 students and engineers in the development of the project. Additionally, attended daily lectures and talks by aerospace professors and top industry professionals in the aerospace sector. FELLOWSHIPS and AWARDS Outstanding Student Paper Award (OSPA), December 2013 AGU Fall Meeting, San Francisco, CA Awarded to the most outstanding student poster presentations of the conference (typically 3-5%). 1 st place, GEM Student Poster Competition, June 2013 Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Conference, Snowmass, CO Awarded to the most outstanding student poster presentation of the conference. 1 st place, Ph.D. Research Competition, May 2013

3 Maria de Soria-Santacruz Pich 3 Awarded by the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the Ph.D. student with the most outstanding research presentation in the department.
