10 There is an interesting divide among the ways that hams prepare for disasters. Some hams believe that the only thing they will be called to do in an emergency is to provide long range NTS type communications. They practice for this by checking into NTS weekly VHF & HF nets, and passing exercise NTS messages. There are other hams that believe that they can best serve in a disaster by being onsite, providing communications and logistical support, using local & regional communications. They practice by participating in public service events that test their skills in communicating and responding to real life needs. It's intriguing that people tend to fall into one of these categories, and don't do both. In fact, the ARRL has formed a committee to look at this disconnect. I hope that hams in the KC area will help to lead the way to a more holistic preparation technique, where hams do BOTH. By participating in VHF & HF traffic nets on a weekly basis, and by ALSO participating in the plentiful local public service events. In order to facilitate the cross-pollination of these currently fairly distinct groups, I will be working with a few of the key people in each camp so that they can lead by example. We will start by having a couple of events liaisons check into the weekly Kansas side band nets to discuss upcoming events. I hope that by actively recruiting on these nets, we will get the second camp's participation in the public service events. To measure the success of this effort, I plan to create a roster of the two camps, and track their current participation, vs. their work in the future. By ensuring that all of us prepare for marginal AND massive communications outages, we will be highly effective at serving the logistical and long range communications needs of all those who rely upon us. I will need your help to ensure the effectiveness of this effort, we must all work together to cross this ham divide.
