Section 1: Product Overview 1 Product Overview The Intuicom 1200 Data Link is a high-performance, feature-packed, license-free, spreadspectrum wireless transceiver for use with the Leica GPS The Intuicom 1200 Data Link facilitates high-productivity in the field by being simple to configure and use while offering the flexibility to adapt to almost any environment. 1.1 Key Features License-Free No FCC license is required to operate the Intuicom 1200 Data Link. High Speed/High Performance 115,200+ bps over-the air-data rate provides low latency and bandwidth for applications such as multiple message types, signal repeating to extend range, and 5 and 10 Hz correction rates. Flexibility The same unit can be utilized as a Base, Rover, Repeater, or even Rover-Repeater. Low Power External battery not required, no extra cables. Spread Spectrum The Intuicom 1200 Data Link uses Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum technology to avoid interference and enables user-defined channels 1.2 Key Concepts Spread Spectrum The Intuicom 1200 Data Link uses Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum to avoid interference. By default, the unit hops on 112 different frequencies, hopping many times per second. The user can control the pattern of the hopping, the frequencies on which it hops, and the length of time per hop Channels In the context of an Intuicom 1200 Data Link, a Channel is a combination of: hopping pattern (frequency key), the length of time per hop (min and max packet sizes), whether repeater(s) are used, and a unique network number. Users configure the parameters for a channel and then simply switch between channels by using a channel number (0-8). Units with channels configured the same, can communicate on the same channel. Channel configuration is typically a one-time event, and then users simply switch between channels as necessary in the field using the Leica System 1200 Controller interface. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 1: Product Overview Digital Radio Link The Intuicom 1200 Data Link transceivers are digital radios. Units configured as Rover, Repeater or Rover-Repeaters will only link to a single Base or Repeater. For example: If two Base transceivers are identically configured and set to the same channel, a given Rover will link to, and receive data from, only one. The Base or Repeater to which a Rover, Repeater, or Rover-Repeater links depends upon the signal strength at the moment the unit is trying to establish a link Radio Network A Network is a group of radios operating on the same channel. The Base radio broadcasts data Rovers and Repeaters link with the Base radio (or another Repeater) and receive or repeat data. All units operating on the same channel must have identical settings for key parameters: Frequency Key, Network Number, Min/Max Packet Size, and whether repeaters are enabled. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 2: Quick Start 2 Quick Start Intuicom 1200 Data Link units ship from the factory with a default configuration for all nine available channels. The units ship configured as a rover set to channel 0. If the units have been configured after receipt from the factory, the units can still communicate on channel 0 regardless because channel 0 is not user-configurable. To operate a pair of factory default units as an RTK Base and Rover: 1. Clip one unit to the Leica GPS 1200 Base, and one unit to the Rover 2. Attach an included whip antenna to each unit. 3. In each Leica GPS 1200 configure the Real-Time Interface to use a PacificCrest PDL and use the interface to set to channel 0. Figure 2-1: Controlling Real-Time Interface on GPS 1200 Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 2: Quick Start Figure 2-2: Channel Selection Screen on GPS On the Base, re-enter the control for the PDL and set to channel 14 (this leaves the unit on channel 0 and configures it to operate as an RTK base). 5. Confirm operation by observing the LEDS on the unit: Figure 2-3: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Status LEDs LED Rover Base Power/Link Solid Green Solid Red Signal Solid Red Solid Red Data Flashing Green Light Red/Flashing Red Mode Solid Green Solid Red Table 2-1: Base/Rover Status LEDs Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration 3 Configuration 3.1 Overview The Intuicom 1200 Data Link can be configured using a programming cable (Intuicom P/N FIP4-12PCBL-L) and a PC with a terminal emulation program such as HyperTerminal, Procomm, or TeraTerm. The Intuicom 1200 Data Link comes from the factory with a default configuration, specifically: It is configured to operate as a rover (receiver) It is configured to operate on channel 0 (a non user configurable channel) It is configured with a serial interface baud rate to 38,400 baud, N81, no flowcontrol A typical configuration involves setting the operation mode (rover, base, repeater, roverrepeater), the baud rate, as well as configuring the channel table and selecting an active channel. While the unit can be used with the factory defaults, it is highly recommended that the settings defining the channels in the channel table be changed to values unique to each user group. For example: Users may be operating in an area with say, four fixed GPS reference stations broadcasting RTK messages. A user would then configure four of the available channels to be compatible with the four reference stations. Users could then select the appropriate channel for the nearest reference stations while operating in the field. The same user might still use channel for communication between an in-the-field base and rover. 3.2 Accessing the Setup Menu To access the interactive setup menu for the Intuicom 1200 Data Link: With the Intuicom 1200 Data Link unit removed from the Leica GPS 1200, attach the programming cable to the 1200 Data Link using the LEMO connector. Attach the DB9 end of the programming cable to a PC s available serial port. Supply power to the unit by attaching the power adapter supplied with the programming cable (12VDC with 2.1 x 5.5mm coaxial plug, center pin positive). Confirm power by observing that the units LEDs light. Start the terminal emulation program on the PC and set for the appropriate serial port at 19,200 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and no flow control. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration Press and hold the setup button on the cable for ~ 4 seconds until the Main Setup Menu appears on the screen Note: LEDS will turn Green indicating Setup Mode. 3.3 Setting the Configuration Figure 3-1: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Main Menu It is recommended that the user step though this section to configure a given unit for operation in the field. Generally units only need configuration using the programming cable to initially setup or change the channel table, or advanced radio configuration parameters Operation Modes A1200 Data Link can operate in one of four modes: Rover In Rover Mode the unit links with a Base, Repeater or Rover-Repeater to receive RTK corrections. Base In Base Mode the unit transmits corrections to linked Rovers, Repeater, or Rover-Repeaters. Repeater As a Repeater, the unit links to an upstream Base, Repeater or Rover- Repeater. Repeaters or Rover-Repeaters can be chained together as necessary providing correction data streams. Rover-Repeater As a Rover-Repeater, a unit can provide corrections to linked downstream units while operating as a Rover itself, sending RTK messages to the attached Leica GPS Toggle through the modes selecting 1 from the Main Menu until the desired mode is displayed. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration Figure 3-2: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Main Menu - After Channel Change The Operation Mode can also be changed using the Leica 1200 Controller. See Section 4.7 for more information about changing the operation mode while attached to the Leica GPS Channels and Channel Configuration Some thought and planning should be put into configuration of the channel table. It can, of course, be changed any time, as needed using the information below. In the context of the 1200 Data Link, a channel a group of spread spectrum radio settings. By changing channels the user is actually changing a number of key settings that separate spread spectrum radio links. A common application is for users of fixed reference stations to pre-configure their 1200 Data Links to associate a channel with the settings necessary to link to and receive corrections from each available reference station. The same user may configure a channel for ad-hoc communications as well. The 1200 Data Link supports up to eight (8) user configurable channels. Channel 0 is non-user configurable maintaining a known channel. A Rover, Repeater, or Rover-Repeater s channel settings must match those of the Base with which it will link. It is a good idea to configure the Base 1200 Data Link before configuring the unit(s) to be used as Rovers or Repeaters. Typically a user configures the channels using the programming cable, and then selects, or changes between channels using the Leica GPS 1200 controller. To configure channels: 1. Select Option 2 from the Main Menu. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration Figure 3-3: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Channel Table Configuration 2. Select a channel to configure. 3. As prompted, enter the value for each channel parameter. Figure 3-4: Setting Parameters for a 1200 Data Link Channel Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration 4. Select 9 to select the active channel. (Allowing new parameters to take effect even if the active channel is not changing) Figure 3-5: Selecting the Active Channel 5. Press ESC to return to the Main Menu (note that the current Active Channel is displayed as part of Main Menu Option 2. Explanation of Channel Parameters: Frequency Key A number between 0 and 14. Each number represents a unique pseudo-random hopping pattern. Networks operating near one another should have different values for the Frequency Key. Network Number A number between 1 and 4000 (note, the value 255 is not allowed). This is a number uniquely identifying a network. This number is arbitrary, but like the Frequency Key, must be the same for all units operating as part of the same network or operating on the same channel. Min/Max Packet Sizes Two numbers between 1 and 9. The Min and Max packet size affect latency and control bandwidth in the network. Like Network Number and Frequency Key, these numbers must be configured the same for all units participating in the same network or operating on the same channel. The default is a Min Packet Size of 1 and a Max Packet Size of 9, optimizing the bandwidth for a one-directional network with data being transmitted from the Base to Rover(s). A bi-directional data network might use a more balanced configuration of Min Packet size of 9 and a Max Packet Size of 8. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration Repeaters Enabled Yes or No. Indicates whether Repeaters or Rover- Repeaters might be utilized on this channel. If Repeater(s) will be utilized, all units operating on the same channel or network must set this value to Yes. Using repeaters impacts available bandwidth. For 10Hz RTK applications, it is recommended to set this value to No Baud Rate Configuration Select 3 from the Main Menu to configure the RS232 Serial baud rate that the Intuicom 1200 Data Link will use to communicate with the Leica GPS 1200 when connected. The baud rate settings must match those configured on the Leica GPS 1200 for the Real-Time interface device. Hardware flow control is offered. The setting for flow control (None or Hardware CTS/RTS) must match the setting on the Leica GPS Figure 3-6: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Baud Rate Configuration Menu Default Profiles Default Profiles offer a quick return to default settings and a known state. There are four Default Configuration Profiles offered: Rover, Base, Repeater, and Rover-Repeater. Each Default Profile sets the Active Channel back to Channel 0. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.

Section 3: Configuration Figure 3-7: Intuicom 1200 Data Link Default Profiles Menu Advanced Settings The Advanced Configuration Menu allows access to detailed radio configuration and firmware component upgrades. Figure 3-8: Advanced Configuration Menu WARNING: Changing Radio Configuration settings without detailed knowledge of the settings and the effects could result in units that fail to link. While the Default Profiles can recover from most configuration changes, it is highly recommended that no changes be made without specific knowledge. WARNING: Attempts to access firmware upgrade menu without a firmware file supplied by Intuicom may result in a unit that is unable to link and will need to be returned to Intuicom to be reset. 18 Section 4: Operation 4 Operation After the unit has been configured using the Programming Cable, it is ready to be attached to and controlled by the Leica GPS Attaching unit to Leica GPS 1200 Attach the Intuicom 1200 Data Link unit to the Leica GPS 1200 using Port 1. Be sure to secure the 1200 Data Link by rotating the plastic ring around the TNC antenna connector. After powering the Leica GPS 1200, confirm power on the Intuicom 1200 Data Link by observing whether the power LED lights (red or green). 4.2 Attaching and orienting antenna Attach the supplied antenna to the TNC connector on the Intuicom 1200 Data Link. Be sure the antenna is fully threaded on tight and that the antenna is oriented vertically. 4.3 Antenna attachment using Leica accessories For better performance the included antenna can be attached to a Leica supplied antenna mount. The Leica P/N # clips to the base of the GPS antenna and provides a TNC-TNC connector. Thread the included antenna to the top TNC connector and connect a TNC Male to TNC Male cable between the Intuicom 1200 Data Link and the bottom TNC connector on the Leica Antenna mount. 4.4 Status LEDs and meanings The Intuicom 1200 Data Link has four bi-color LEDs on the front panel that indicate status. Press ESC to exit the Config Menu. 4.7 Changing Operation Mode The Operation Mode can be changed via the Leica GPS 1200 controller. An Intuicom 1200 Data Link can be changed to one of four operation modes: Rover Base Repeater Rover-Repeater Changing operation modes is accomplished by sending a channel change command to the unit for a special channel. Only channels 0 through 8 are valid active channels. When the unit receives a channel change request for channels 12, 13, 14, or 15, the unit will respond by changing the Operation Mode and leaving the current active channel unchanged. Verify Operation Mode changes by observing the status LEDs. 23 4.8 Using Repeaters and Rover-Repeaters Section 4: Operation Utilizing a repeater can substantially increase range. Once repeaters are enabled, any number of repeaters can be used to extend range without affecting bandwidth. When operated as a Rover-Repeater, a unit can both pass data to the attached GPS as well as repeat that data for other users. Note the following key points when operating repeaters: Repeaters must be enabled (set to Yes in the channel table for the active channel) for ALL units operating in a given network. A Rover will link with the strongest signal; this may be the Base itself or a Repeater. A Rover will unlink when the signal becomes too weak and begin searching for a stronger signal. If a Rover-Repeater unlinks from an upstream Base or Repeater, all Rovers or Rover- Repeaters linked to it, will unlink and stop receiving data. A Repeater could be operated standalone using the programming cable to provide power. This is not a recommended setup but may be useful as a stopgap solution. Enabling repeaters reduces the available bandwidth. Repeaters may not be useable or may require special configuration for 10Hz RTK applications. Revision 1.0a 7000B Intuicom, Inc.
