12 Appendix B Appendix B: Abstract of Doctorial Thesis (KAIST, Feb. 2007) Title: Transmit/Receive Processing with Partial or Full Feedback Information for Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) Systems The dissertation has investigated two types of processing methods for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems. The first part of the investigation has focused on transmit-processing (preprocessing) for single-user (SU)-MIMO systems. The second part of the investigation has focused on transmit- and receiveprocessing (pre- and post-processing) for multi-user (MU)-MIMO systems. In the first part, SU-MIMO systems have been considered with partial feedback information. A double space-time transmit diversity (DSTTD) with antenna grouping (or shuffling) has been considered in the study, and an efficient antenna grouping method for the DSTTD has been developed based on a minimization of mean square error (MMSE) criterion. To reduce the computational complexity of the 4-by-2 DSTTD receiver, a simple criterion that is equivalent to an MMSE criterion has been derived. Compared to an existing method based on a signalto-noise ratio, the proposed method has involved considerably reduced computational complexity in finding the antenna grouping matrix while sustaining comparable performance. Furthermore, new preprocessing methods with transmit antenna selection and grouping (ASG) have been proposed for a space-time coded system to improve a postprocessed signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). In addition, peak-to-average power ratio reduction techniques have been studied to apply the proposed ASG into the broadband systems, such as an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Furthermore, an optimal criterion for transmit antenna selection that minimizes a pairwise error probability has been examined for an antenna selection system when an optimal maximum likelihood receiver is employed. Inthesecondpart, MU-MIMOsystemshavebeenconsideredwithfullchannelstateinformationatthetransmitter. A regularized channel diagonalization method has been proposed for a joint transmit-receive linear optimization in the downlink MU-MIMO communications. A joint iterative algorithm to minimize a modified MMSE under a total transmit power constraint has been derived, and its convergence has been proved. The SINR has been analyzed and the sum rate has been evaluated through computer simulation. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing zero-forcing (ZF)- and MMSE-based methods. Moreover, MU-MIMO user-pair selection and subchannel band allocation algorithms have been examined for MU-MIMO OFDMA systems. Herein, a recursive null-space computation algorithm has been proposed to reduce computational load. To further reduce the computational complexity, near-optimal algorithms have been studied and compared in terms of the computational complexities, achievable rates, and fairness among users. Numerical results have shown that the computational complexity is reduced dramatically by using the proposed first-fit algorithm with perfect fairness among users and comparable performance. viii of xiii
