Celebrating over 35 years as specialists in the design and creation of bespoke oak furniture, the following collection of over 40 designs represents the variety of items created in our workshop during this time. In almost every case the designs are inspired by surviving original pieces or recreated from period illustrations from the Medieval, Tudor, Renaissance, Elizabethan, Stuart or Jacobean eras. Our passion lies in finding inspiration from historically beautiful designs and creating pieces of furniture that match the exact requirements of our clients, whether this be a magnificent tester bed, a technical cabinet to house 21st century audio-visual equipment or a set of exquisite dining furniture. Our furniture is divided into categories: Seating, Tables, Cupboards, Beds and Bespoke Commissions, with each piece having its own numbered code for easy reference. The sizes indicated are optimum and can, of course, be altered to suit your requirements. Each piece of Stuart Interiors furniture is individually hand-made to order, using finest quality, quarter-sawn European oak. Each piece is constructed traditionally using the age-old skills of the joiner, producing a unique item. Equal to the importance of authentic design and construction is the skill required in the selection of natural timber. We are proud of the close relationship we have with our timber yard. Each of our craftsmen understand the value placed on selecting only the finest certified mature oaks from carefully managed forests. Butts are selected and sawn to our specification, enabling us to offer outstanding quarter-sawn oak of the finest quality. Our furniture is wax polished by hand prior to leaving the workshops. Further waxing and polishing in the years to come will continue to build the patina and enrich the beauty of the grain, adding to your enjoyment and enhancing its value. Our expertise lies in finding the most interesting historic designs and recreating them today to a size and functionality which exactly matches your requirements. Cabinets can be designed to incorporate hidden audio-visual equipment or any other necessities of modern living. Commissions include an interpretation of the early medieval bed of King Edward I for the Tower of London, Lady Stepney s 18th century full tester for Llanelly House and a replica of the magnificent Corbet Bed of 1593, part of the V&A Collection. We can also offer a full range of period style textiles and trimmings and a complete upholstery service should this be required. 23 bespoke commissions: bog-oak knight When a client dreamed up an idea of having a knight as the supporting corner post for the private bar at his home in the USA, we were thrilled to take on the commission. Our recommendation was to design and create a fine figure of about four feet in height, not from our usual oak, but from 6,000-year-old bog oak, excavated from deep within the Somerset Levels. Over thousands of years, the oak is preserved by the peat bogs which cocoon it. It takes on a very dark, almost black stain due to the high levels of tannin within the moors. The result is a fascinating natural material with an unusual and beautiful patina. Working closely with our client, we produced preliminary sketches of the knight for approval prior to commencing the carving. Our Master Carver spent around one month creating the figure and it has been hand finished using a traditional and simple beeswax polish. 24 bespoke commissions: st. andrew s organ case This was a wonderfully unusual commission for the west end of the nave at St Andrew s Church, in the parish of Melcombe Horsey, Devon. Taking inspiration from designs typical of the 17th century, Stuart Interiors designed and made the oak casing for the organ and a complimenting stool. Hand carved details include the S-Link design used at the top of the organ casing and Lunette frieze carved into the stool. Working closely with our client, we took full site dimensions to allow us to prepare proposal drawings. The casing and stool are made from 1st quality, quarter sawn European oak, finished to match the exact requirements of our client.
