11 Photographs - Copyright General Rules All photographs taken before 1 st January 1955 are out of copyright Free Trade Agreement with USA has extended copyright period from 50 years to 70 years Photographs taken from 1 st January 1955 will be protected until at least 1 st January 2025 Photographs - Copyright General Rules (continued) All photographs taken between 1 st January 1955 and 30 th April 1969 are protected for 70 years from date photograph was taken All photographs taken from 1 st May 1969 onwards are protected for 70 years from end of the year of first publication (when copies are first made available to public) 11

12 Photographs - Copyright Commissioned photographs Commissioned photographs taken from 31 st July 1998 for private & domestic purposes client has copyright Commissioned photographs for advertising or other specific purpose photographer has copyright In general the person who pays owns copyright but there can be limits on use Photographs Moral Rights Affects photographs taken from 21 st December 2000 Photographer has the right to be identified as the creator of the image and to have a say in how that image is treated in publication 12
