1 Jim Coutré semi-private workshop handout notes: Soft Proofing and Gamut Warning Soft Proofing your images saves time and money! With an appropriately lit print, If your printed copy of Apollo Shirley is Not a Close Match to your digital file of Apollo Shirley when it is Soft Proofed for the same printer/media of the print, then IT IS YOUR COMPUTER MONITOR THAT IS WRONG. You need to adjust your screen brightness and perhaps need to have the monitor re-calibrated/profiled. Apollo Shirley is a standard srgb 8 bit JPEG. If you have not previously set up your computer(s) for printer and media ICC Profiles for Soft Proofing (this is necessary for each printer/media pair on each printer), then from the Main Menu bar select View and then select Custom: Jim Coutré Photography Page 1 of

2 Use the Custom Proof Condition drop down menu to select you printer, in this demonstration the Epson If you haven t Saved the printer/media ICC Profile pair for the media on which to print, Then select the printer/media pair you wish to simulate in the Soft Proof using the drop down and scrolling until you find your target: Jim Coutré Photography Page 2 of

3 Select the Target ICC Profile target. Now check the Rendering Intent result of that printer/media pair profile on your image for the Relative versus Perceptual by using the Preview check box of each to see the resulting Rendering and select your choice. Jim Coutré Photography Page 3 of

4 Note that the Simulate Black check box is Checked for best matching, IMO but not paper color. Below you click the Okay button, Save this combination for future see in Soft Proofing. By giving it a name you ll recognized. Once Saved click the Okay radio button. It will be available in the Custom drop down from Menu View for proofing your image Jim Coutré Photography Page 4 of

5 For future use first select which of the previously Saved printer/media profiles From the Menu View Custom drop down. This automatically selects it as you current Proof Color (keep in mind it becomes a Sticky Default). Toggle it on and off using the drop down or CRT+Y key combination. 6 One you print your image, bring it along side your monitor with good light falling on the print since that is reflective light intensity and color temperature (versus the transmitted light of your monitor) and it should be a Close Match of Print to Screen ; if needed change the reflective light source (window light, tungsten, BUT NOT fluorescent). If it is not, first check a similar comparison of Apollo Shirley with its correct printer/media profile. If that doesn t closely match, it is your screen that is the problem. If you are not happy with the printed image (and assuming it is not your monitor), make some adjustments of your file and then reprint the image. Don t forget to toggle your Proof Colors Off because that too is a Sticky Default. Now it turns out that your active image name in the image title will show the Proof Color being simulated currently in use if it is active. This works well when your monitor is currently adjusted and you have a reasonably good color profile for that specific monitor installed. Jim Coutré Photography Page 6 of

7 Out of Gamut warning You can also check Out of Gamut colors for the output media and decide how to Render them (i.e. Relative or Perceptual) for the printer/media you are Soft Proofing by selecting the Menu, View drop down list s Gamut Warning item. (Note that I had to select the 3880 Water Color Radiant White media in order to get Out of Gamut colors for the demonstration image since printable Gamut is a function of the printer/media pair. There are no out of gamut colors for this image when the Epson 3880 with Premium Luster is being Soft Proofed): The color used for the Gamut Warning is an menu Edit Preference setting which you need to change based upon the colors in your image in order to be readily visible. 8 To Select a different color for the Gamut Warning, click on the color box (in this example a Green), then select a different color from the spectrum of colors Jim Coutré Photography Page 8 of

9 And make your desired fine adjustment And clicked the Okay radio button. This becomes your new Sticky Default for Out of Gamut Warning. Jim Coutré Photography Page 9 of
