Learned Various design research methods, effective user interview techniques, how to build useful personas, and how to present user feedback. Obtained, organized and presented product feedback in an effective and interesting way

3 Wave Insulin Pump The Wave is an insulin pump that feels comfortable both emotionally and physically. This is accomplished by redesigning the information architecture, the interaction idioms, and the physical form.

5 Creating an insulin pump that is less machine Not Just One Aspect To create an insulin pump that is more human, required that it not be embarrassing, but that wasn t enough. The user experience had to be an extension of something they were already familiar with. This meant evaluating and changing the information architecture, the interaction idiom and the physical form. 19 But then don t get a camera because cameras are poor at sharing. It takes 9 steps from taking a picture with a traditional camera to sharing it.

22 Using the phone as the interface for the camera Now that the phone was going to be used as the interface and storage for the camera, I had to figure out how they would be integrated together. After exploring many mounting systems, the one that was chosen was the simplest and most familiar. The phone would slide into a pliable compartment at the back of the camera. This is similar to sliding your phone into a silicone phone case.

23 Physical, Digital and Human Interaction 3 Doing quick rough sketches of the form interaction and interface at the same time let me think through how they would behave with one another. This was important to determine what features needed to be on the physical camera and what, and how it could be done digitally. Examples of this are The interaction idiom of the phone app is modeled after rotation, like rotating a lens to focus 2 The realization that almost no buttons are needed if there is a touch screen 3 The dial that adjusts the priority setting for that mode is left blank and the readout is digital 1 3 2

25 Functionality and Features APSC sensor size is only a slight step down from full-frame while being considerably more 1 7 affordable. 2 Lense release button. 3 Microphone. 4 Gap for pliable phone case to bend so phone can be inserted. 5 Phone connects to camera via NFC when in the case. 6 Priority dial is blank because the info is visable on the display (as seen in screen mock-ups.) The shutter button and off/on/viewfinder switch. 8 Camera is compact, only slightly larger than the phone. 9 Priority dial and the readout on the screen mock-up.

26 Interaction Idiom and Screen Mock-Ups As mentioned earlier the digital interaction idiom is modeled around rotation, like that of the hardware of a camera. On the right there are concentric controls. The inner circle is a mode selector and the outer circle is the refined controls for that mode. This again, is referring to camera hardware that has stacked dials relating to one another. The controls that are not related to capturing an image, are more similar to a smart phone app folder. This is used for efficiency of space on the screen and familiar interaction. Lastly, what is seen through the lens is always visible so the photographer doesn t miss that perfect moment.

28 Pop-up Room Divider The Pop-up Room Divider is a space separator for small homes. It easily unfolds to break up a space and provide privacy then folds down into a fraction of the size for easy storage. For this project I was awarded first place out of my class by Umbra s VP of Design, Matt Carr.

29 + RIT The Brief In being mindful of small spaces, develop an innovative house ware that considers storage, technology, and residential spaces. This project is in collaboration with Umbra so the product must be consistent with there design language and add value to the current line of products. Starting With Questions The question how to make small spaces feel more like home? stuck out to me as a good place to start. So I investigated the emotional and psychological effects of living in small spaces by reading about environmental physiology.

30 Next I Asked The People Who Live In Small Spaces The vast majority of residents who choose (small apartments) are young professionals Xavier Stephen Abby Student Young Professional Young Professional Urban Land Institute, The Macro View on Micro Units 2013 I d prefer not to do work in the same space as I sleep but in a dorm it is necessary I feel exposed in my studio, it is so open. I look over from my bed and right there is the outside door All the street noise and light kept me from sleeping when I first moved in

31 Make It... I learned from these conversations, and extensive literature review, that a place will only ever feel like a place and not a home if it is not exclusive, private or safe. A place will not feel like a home if you can t make it yours. Exclusive Private Protected The Bigger Idea Is To Have Control Over Your Space

32 3 Ways Of Controlling Space Visually Separating It Physically Dividing It Keeping The Outside Out Visual separation of space would help a user control their space by visually marking certain spaces for certain activities. While this direction accomplished making a space exclusive, it was not further pursued because it did not do anything to make the space more private or protected. Physically dividing it lets a user most dramatically and practically have control over their space. When a physical object is put in place to divide space it creates a space that is private, protected and exclusive. Keeping the outside out lets a user have more privacy and feel more protected but, does little to make space inside the home more exclusive or feel personalized. Also, users cautioned that many times they want to experience the outside.

33 Sketching around From Small Storage to Large Function. I started sketching products that both divided space and were considered versatile such as window blinds and folding fans. What started to emerge was an object that transformed itself as it transformed the space. Since this was a design for small spaces it only made sense for this transformation to be from small storage to large function. Transformation From Large To Small Through Folding

35 Refine It... Elevate It To really be effective the divider needed to be taller to give it more presence. Build It Physical prototypes revealed the proportions of the stand to keep the divider from tipping over. Clamp It The final solution is a stand that clamps the divider by the use of rubber gaskets.

37 How It Works... Control over space is given with a light weight room divider that is easy to set up and take down, diffuses light, and breaks up the room visually.
