Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop Topic 9: Photo Retouching Part 2 In the last week s lesson, you repaired damaged areas of an image, removed unwanted parts of an image, cloned areas and finished with adjusting an image s tone. In this lesson you will firstly finish off anything not completed in the last lesson, then use several colour correction techniques. Download the Topic 9 images folder from my website. Extract the images folder Save the folder to your USB drive. If you have already jumped ahead and opened Photoshop, then click on the File tab and click on Exit. Next you will restore the Adobe Photoshop default settings: Double-click the Photoshop icon or choose it from the Start menu and then IMMEDIATELY hold down the Ctrl, Alt and Shift keys together at the same time to restore the default Photoshop preferences. You should see the window shown on the right: Click Yes. Choose File Browse in Bridge Last lesson you were working on a file called piano-player.jpg In Adobe Bridge double-click on: piano-player.jpg to open this file in Photoshop. Last lesson we were working with retouching tools and did not finish this off. We will finish this off first D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 1
Retouching Tools (Continued) Method 5 The Shadows/Highlights adjustment is used to correct over exposed (too bright) and under exposed (too dark) areas of your images whilst preserving the overall colour and tonal balance of your image. I use this adjustment tool quite often. 1. Right click on your Original layer and create a duplicate layer naming it: Adjust Shadows/Highlights 2. Click on the Adjust Shadows/Highlights layer and then choose Image Adjustments Shadows/Highlights. 3. Adjust the Shadows Amount and Highlight Amount sliders until you are happy with results: 4. For even more options, tick the Show More Options checkbox: 5. Click OK. 8f Adjust Shadows/Highlights 6. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. 7. Save your work on this layer. Question 1. Comparing each of the five tonal correction options, which works best for your piano-player image? Colour Correction A colour cast is a tint of a particular colour, usually unwanted, which affects the whole, or portion, of a photographic image evenly. Certain types of light can cause film, digital cameras and scanners to have a colour cast. This means that the colours that you can see in an image will have a bias towards a certain colour. There are several techniques that can be used in Photoshop to correct colour cast. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 2
In Adobe Bridge double-click on: Mount-Buffalo-Chalet.jpg to open this image in Photoshop. The colours seen in this image seem a bit pinkish. Let s try to improve this. Method 1 Original image For a quick fix try using Auto Color. Results can vary but I suggest that you give it a go. 1. Right click on your Background layer in Photoshop and name this layer: Original 2. Right click on your Original layer in Photoshop and create a duplicate layer naming this layer: Auto Colour 3. Make sure the Auto Colour layer is selected and choose Image Auto Color. 4. Save your work on this layer as a.psd Photoshop document. 5. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. 6. Hide the Auto Colour layer. If this quick fix method is not entirely successful, then try Method 2 If you are not happy with results from Method 1, then you can make manual adjustments 7. Right click on your Original layer in Photoshop and create a duplicate layer naming this layer: Colour Balance 8. Make sure the Colour Balance layer is selected. 9. Choose Image Adjustments Color Balance. 10. Look closely at your image and identify the colour cast colour. 11. Drag the relevant slider/s away from the cast colour/s until the colour cast has gone. At this point any whites in your image become pure whites. 12. If the colour cast is more apparent in the shadows or highlight parts of your image, then adjust the colour balance in these tonal areas individually by selecting Shadows or Highlights in the Tone Balance section of the Color Balance dialog box. Note: It is usually best to leave selected the Preserve Luminosity checkbox. 13. Click OK. 14. Save your work on this layer. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 3
15. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. 16. Hide the Colour Balance layer. Method 3 Colour Balance adjustment If you are not happy with results from the two methods covered so far, then try adjusting the hue (colour), saturation (intensity of the colour) and lightness (how much black or white is added to the colour). 17. Right click on your Original layer in Photoshop and create a duplicate layer naming this layer: Hue and Saturation 18. Make sure the Hue and Saturation layer is selected. 19. Choose Image Adjustments Hue/Saturation. 20. Make colour adjustments using the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders. 21. If you like, you can choose from the Preset menu. (Try each of these yourself.) 22. If you know what colour you want to correct, then you can choose that colour from the drop-down menu (shown on the right) and then the sliders will only affect that colour in your image. You can repeat this step on any of the colours in this menu. 23. Try altering the yellows in the image as I have done below: 24. Click OK to apply your hue, saturation and lightness adjustments. 25. Save your work on this layer. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 4
26. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. 27. Hide the Hue and Saturation layer. Colorize Hue/Saturation adjustment: Yellows Ticking the Colorize checkbox in the lower-right of the Hue/Saturation dialog box allows you to apply a single colour to your image creating an old-fashioned sepia like effect. 28. Right click on your Original layer in Photoshop and create a duplicate layer naming this layer: Colourise 29. Make sure the Colourise layer is selected. 30. Choose Image Adjustments Hue/Saturation Tick the Colorize checkbox. 31. Make colourise adjustments using the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders. 32. Click OK to apply your colourising adjustments. 33. Save your work on this layer. 34. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. Hue/Saturation adjustment: Colorize examples D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 5
Skills Check 9a Imagine that you are working for a magazine and you need an image of the Danish flag, but you only have an image of the Swedish flag available. You do not want to use any images from the internet as this could result in copyright violations for your magazine company. Is there a solution to this conundrum? 1. In Adobe Bridge double-click on: Flag-of-Sweden.jpg to open this image in Photoshop. 2. Zoom in using Ctrl Use the Magnetic Lasso Tool ( ) to select just the flag as shown on the right: Swedish flag 4. Make a Hue/Saturation adjustment dragging the Hue slider all the way to the right into the red section, the Lightness to about +25 and possibly the Saturation slider to the right as well: 5. Next, because the cross in the original image of the flag is yellow, choose the yellows in the Hue/Saturation dialog box and move the Lightness slider all the way to the right as shown to create a white cross. You now have the Danish flag! 6. Click OK. 7. Deselect your flag: Ctrl + D. 8. Save your changes. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 6
Question 2. Would it have been better to create a separate layer for the procedures in the exercise above as we did in the previous hew/saturation exercises, or was there an even better method to use than creating a separate layer? Explain. Colour Retouching Toolbox Tools The Dodge Tool : When you drag over areas in an image with the Dodge Tool, you lighten these areas. Use it to brighten shadows or intensify highlights. Tips: 1/ Best results are achieved if you use a large soft brush with a low exposure value. 2/ Hold down Alt to temporarily switch to the Burn Tool. 3/ Always try Midtones range first. 4/ For best results, make sure Protect Tones is ticked. The Burn Tool : When you drag over areas in an image with the Burn Tool, you darken these areas. Use it to darken shadows or decrease highlights. Tips: 1/ It works best if you use a large soft brush with a low exposure value. 2/ Hold down Alt to temporarily switch to the Dodge Tool. 3/ Always try Midtones range first. 4/ For best results, make sure Protect Tones is ticked. 5/ This tool works well when restoring old photos that have faded or under exposed areas. The Sponge Tool : The Sponge Tool has two modes: Saturate (increase colour strength) and Desaturate (decrease colour strength). Tips: 1/ The Flow value determines the strength of the Sponge Tool effect. 2/ When in Saturate mode you get better results if you tick the Vibrance option. 3/ When in Desaturate mode, if you have the Vibrance option ticked, it creates a faded colour effect. Make sure Vibrance is unticked if you really want to desaturate. The Blur Tool : The Blur Tool is used for making small adjustments to small sections of an image by dragging over the areas that you want to blur. Tips: 1/ You may be better off selecting an area that you want to blur and then using one of the Blur filters. 2/ Hold down Alt to temporarily switch to the Sharpen Tool. The Sharpen Tool : The Sharpen Tool is used for making small adjustments to small sections of an image by dragging over the areas that you want to sharpen. Tips: 1/ You may be better off selecting an area that you want to sharpen and then using one of the Sharpen filters. 2/ Be careful not to overdo it with this tool because it can generate a lot of noise (random coloured pixels) in the applied areas. 3/ Hold down Alt to temporarily switch to the Blur Tool. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 7
Try using any number of these five tools above on one of your images. My trick is to drag back and forth, or drag in a small circular motion, to build up the tone. Skills Check 9b Imagine that you are working with a Parks Victoria committee looking at repainting Mount Buffalo Chalet pink. Given your expertise, you have been given the task of recolouring a photo of the chalet to see what this would look like if it was repainted pink. You decide to use The Color Replacement Tool : The Color Replacement Tool (find it under Brush Tools) is used to replace any specific colour without affecting adjacent colours. 1. In Adobe Bridge double-click on: Mount-Buffalo-Chalet.psd to reopen this image in Photoshop. 2. Right click on your Original layer in Photoshop and create a duplicate layer naming this layer: Color Replacement Tool 3. Zoom in using Ctrl Make sure the Color Replacement Tool layer is selected and all layers above this are hidden as shown below. 5. From the Tools panel choose the Color Replacement Tool. 6. Set the Foreground Color to Red by clicking on that colour in the Swatches panel as shown below: 7. Choose a brush size that is slightly smaller than the area that you want to recolour. You want to recolour the yellow in the chalet so a brush size of 30 will be fine for clicking on the yellow colour on the right side of the chalet without touching any other colour. I have drawn a red circle at the spot I chose. 8. Set the following options on the Options bar. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 8
Note: The three sampling options determine which colour will be replaced. Continuous: Once: Background Swatch: uses the colour directly under the crosshair of the brush and updates as you drag. uses the colour directly under the crosshair of the brush when you first click down. This is a good choice if you brush over other colours as these other colours will not be replaced. uses the Background Colour as the colour. 9. Now drag around the areas that you want to recolour. Do no release your mouse button until you have completely gone over all yellow coloured areas of the chalet. Do not worry about going over other coloured areas because you have (hopefully) chosen the Once sampling option. 10. Save your work on this layer. 11. Switch on/off changes by clicking the layer visibility button: to show/hide the difference this has made to your image. I am not convinced that a pink paint job is a good idea! Question 3. Using the Color Replacement Tool just the once, I was not able to get rid of all yellow areas in the image. Explain why this is the case. Have you backed up all your work at the end of this lesson to your USB thumb drive? Have you been saving your work every 10 minutes? Show your Adobe Photoshop documents to Mr Kruyer for assessment. Due Dates: All questions and set exercises should be completed by next week s class. D:\TAFE\adobe\photoshop\learning-tasks\level-3\task9\TYAPhotoshop9.docx Page 9
