2 PROJECT STATEMENT Carface, artist Jeff Kauffman /carface-project The Carface project is a series of photographs of the "faces" of toy Matchbox cars from the mid-1960s to early 1970s. The artist chose a head-on view of the toys to portray the strongest, most unique part of any subject, the face. The use of square composition, shallow focus and a rich black background together emphasize the power of this portrayal. As old as the artist himself, the toys bear the scratches, chips, and accumulated imperfections from life's wear and tear. The artist adds, "Until the early 1970s, Janet worked most of her adult life at a corner store in a rural Pennsylvania town. As each new toy reached the store, Janet purchased it for her growing collection. "They might be worth something someday", we would hear her say. When I grew up and moved away, she proudly gave me the collection, coupled with a wood display case hand-crafted by her husband George. Janet (1917-) and George ( ) are my grandparents." Open edition. 8 x 8-inch image on 8.5 x 11-inch paper. This edition is printed with archival inks on high quality archival fine art paper having a soft gloss pearl finish and a subtle texture. The work is signed, unnumbered, and unframed. 16x16 Edition. Limited edition of 15 with 3 artist proofs. 16 x 16-inch image on 17 x 21-inch paper. The edition is printed with archival inks on high quality archival fine art paper having a soft gloss pearl finish and a subtle texture. The work is signed, numbered, unframed, and includes a certificate of authenticity. The artist may create future fine art editions. New editions will be of significantly different sizes and/or papers than the editions described above.

Dynalight studio flash, bounced into a 32-inch white-lined parabolic umbrella, overhead and pointed directly downwards so that the toy is lit by the feathered rear edge of the light pool. Small white reflector cards added highlight. Black cards used a flags helped control excessive glare on windows.

6 ARTIST BIO Jeff Kauffman, photographer, Austin Texas Jeff Kauffman was born in 1961 and grew up in rural Pennsylvania during a time when people communicated using rotary telephones. After earning a Computer Science degree from Penn State University, Jeff moved to Washington DC -- and later to Austin TX to build a career in software engineering. His photography interests began at Washington School of Photography and continued with Santa Fe Workshops. Jeff has been developing his photography while also working full time in technology consulting. His work has appeared in Conde Nast Traveler s truth.traveler, Smithsonian.com, INSite Austin, and The Art of Seeing (pub. Alcove Books), along with various See.Me exhibitions worldwide. Jeff lives in Austin, uses a smartphone, and tells dumb jokes.

7 ARTIST STATEMENT Jeff Kauffman, photographer, Austin Texas USA Everything is interesting. Everything inspires a story. What happened here? What will happen next? What is this person thinking? I imagine those stories when I m creating photographs. At the core of each of my works is a visual drama, perhaps a suspension of time and energy, an unusual arrangement of lines and curves, or a portrayal of a compelling character. I hope my work will inspire viewers to imagine their own stories.
