10 Our Special Process For Slides From Print Films Dale Laboratories is world famous for a process that allows you to get both slides and prints from the same roll of film. Just shoot standard color print films like Kodak Gold or Fujicolor rather than slide films. You ll get fantastic slides, plus optional prints & CDs. How We Make Slides From Negatives This process is a photographer s dream! We print 35mm color negative films onto Kodak Vision print film, producing rich, vibrant color and tremendous sharpness. We use the extra-wide exposure latitude of color print films to give you virtually goof-proof slides. 11 Video Analyzed Slides A process available only at Dale Laboratories Slides are made from color print films that you have consistently exposed to the same light source. The entire negative roll is color corrected on a closed circuit, video analyzer where every frame on the roll receives the same overall correction. Video analyzed slides are suggested when non-standard lighting (rather than daylight or flash) is used to take pictures. It is ideal for events or situations where flash cannot be used. We correct for the average exposure and color balance of each roll; not frame by frame as on our standard slide from print film process. Lighting must be the same for the whole roll and exposures have to be consistent, since all frames receive the same, averaged correction. (Slide frames over the average exposure will be light; those under the average will be dark.) Recommended primarily for sports and concert photography. (Our slides, made with this process, have been used for years by Major League Baseball for the official World Series pictures as well as by pros covering the NFL.) 15 Get beautiful 4"x6" or 5"x7" photos on archival Kodak photographic paper. Your photographs should not fade with the years. That s why it s so important that your best pictures be printed on real photographic paper rather than ink jet. Our prints are sharper, with far better color than ink jet prints. Factor in your time and frustration, ink, expensive paper and wasted prints and you ll find that having us make your prints costs the same or less than doing them yourself. 18 Getting professional enlargements is as easy as filling in an order form and sending us your negative or slide. Here s how we make your enlargements: 1. Your negative or slide is digitally scanned into one of our printing machines. A positive image of the picture shows on a monitor. Color and density are precisely adjusted by a technician who corrects from the video image. 2. We make a 4"x 6" test print on photo paper. 3. A skilled color analyst examines the 4"x 6" print and makes additional color corrections (if any are necessary). 4. The finished color enlargement is printed. Optical prints are made through a fine Nikkor lens. Digital prints are output as millions of colored dots (pixels). If the enlargement is less than perfect, it s corrected and printed again. 5. 19 Great Enlargements From Negs or Slides Enlargements have traditionally been made by projecting negative images through a lens onto photographic paper. To make enlargements from slide originals, laboratories have used internegatives (which are negatives made in the lab by taking a picture of individual slides) so that they could be printed optically on photo paper. New digital technology allows us to print either slides or negatives directly onto photographic paper without going through a lens. Internegatives of slides are no longer required for sizes where digital printing can be used. Digital printing can also provide exciting special effects. (See page 13) With all the features digital offers and the hype given to digital technology in the media you d think that digital printing was the universal photographic solution. This is not necessarily the case. Optical prints are actually better for many situations. That s why we offer both optical and digital printing. We d like to give you a few recommendations on which enlarging technique would best serve your needs. Optical or Digital Enlargements Which Are Best? From color negatives you ll get the most realistic, true-to-life color with optical printing. Order digital enlargements where you want special effects such as underwater corrections or B&W from color. From slides you will get the highest quality with digital printing. Direct, digitally printed enlargements are available from Ektachrome and other E-6 slide films in sizes 5x7 through 12 x18. Internegatives are not required when slides are printed digitally. For non-digitally printed sizes (wallets, 3 1 2x5 or 4 x 6 reprints and 14x 20, 16 x 20 or 20 x30 optical enlargements) please order internegatives. To order enlargements from slides, list the frame numbers shown on your slide mounts and the number and size of the prints you want on a separate piece of paper. 26 To Order Enlargements From 35mm Color Negatives 1. Select Your Negatives Negatives must be submitted in strips of 3 or 4 frames. Please do not cut negatives into single frames. 2. Match Your Negatives Strips With the Corresponding Frames on the Plastic Negative Sleeve On the negative sleeve, write your name and indicate the size, number of prints and frame numbers of the negatives to be printed. Your Name Here Frame #2 Frame #3 Frame #4 1-11x14 1-8x10 3-5x7 Note: Be careful not to damage your negatives with fingerprints, by writing over them, or by folding. 3. Insert Negatives Place your negs fully into the plastic sleeves and mail your negatives in an envelope with cardboard or other reinforcement. Cropping On Enlargements Some of the image area on your 35mm negatives and slides will be cropped (not printed) on the standard enlargement sizes of 5x 7, 8 x10, 11x14, 16x 20, 20 x 24 and 30 x 40. This is due to the differences in the proportions of the artistically ideal, shorter rectangular shape of the standard enlargement sizes compared to the long rectangular shape of the 35mm negative frame. Where the full 35mm negative frame is important, as with group shots, we suggest the full frame formats (8 x12, 12 x18, 14 x 20 or 20 x 30) be ordered. Though these sizes will not print the negative or slide images from corner to corner, they will show most of the frame and will usually avoid cropping out people on the ends of groups. If you wish to have enlargements cropped within the proportions of an 8 x10 ratio print please indicate instructions on a drawing and enclose it with your order. Negatives submitted without cropping instructions will be printed to the sizes required with our technicians using their discretion as to the most pleasing composition. Should instructions be given which cannot be exactly followed, we will use the nearest cropping available. No cropping is available on x3 1 2, x 5 and 5 x 7 prints. 26 Questions? 28 Sending Orders To Dale Laboratories Dale Laboratories film mailers require no postage Our mailers travel by First Class mail. Normally, it takes from 2-4 days after your local postal pick-up for your mailer to arrive in our lab. The mailer will hold up to six rolls of film. You may send larger orders in any sturdy box. (Please be sure to include either the order form on our mailer or the one from this booklet, plus any special instructions.) FedEx, Airborne and UPS deliver to our lab Monday - Friday. If you live outside the United States use our mailer. It is quite secure. Mail sent from outside the U.S. must have correct local postage stamps affixed. To receive additional mailers, please call (800) How We Ship Completed Orders U.S. Mail First Class mail and Priority Mail are used for the majority of our shipments. First Class normally takes from 2-4 days to arrive at your home or office. Priority Mail is delivered anywhere in the U.S. within 2-3 days after shipment from our laboratory. FedEx, Airborne and UPS are used for 2nd day air shipments. Please contact our Customer Service office for rates if you require next day air. Outside the United States we use international mail. Overseas delivery times depend largely on the destination country. Shipping charges of 4 per roll apply to Canada and 10 per roll to other countries.
