1 Teresa asked if I would give this workshop since it seems like some of you aren t comfortable with being able to photos or get them to the VA Clubwoman or your newspaper in a way that gives good, clear results. I m going to try to clear up some of that mystery. You may find some of this clear as mud, but we ll see.. You don t have to take notes. Resources will be listed on a slide or two at the end. And the slides are posted on the GFWC VA website. So, sit back and listen. If you have questions I don t cover, write them down and we ll address at the end if time. Otherwise, you can catch me later. ASK: 1. Who has a digital camera? 2. Who is comfortable with loading to computer, sending to websites, , etc? 3. Who feels like they could use some help? (Hope some hands because this is geared toward beginners) Before get into how to send photos by , etc. want to cover a few basics. 1

2 The first rule for any photo you are going to send to the paper, your friends, etc. is to have a good sharp photo. So make sure your photo is clear and sharp before sending it to anyone. If your photo is blurry like the one on the left, there s not much you Can do to fix it. See folks holding camera up by one hand to take photos. I can t do that and have them sharp. I need to hold it in both hands. But I expect many of you have younger, steadier hands. Action shots are good show people s faces get names will help in having a good photo that Debbie can use in the VA Clubwoman, you can send to the newspaper or print for your scrapbook. 2

3 This is June Dunlow sgranddaughter, Alyssa. Love the photo and June got up close, but she d probably been happier with the photo if the ironing board and clothes were not in the background. Be mindful of background clutter, but sometimes tough to do with quick, action shots of kids. Date stamp personal preference 3

4 If photos are only on your memory card, more chance of losing them. Plus after you have photos, it s hard to find what you want to see. You can hook your camera directly to the computer to transfer photos, but I found it easier to buy a memory card reader and hook it up. Then I just pop out the memory card, put it in the reader and copy them to your computer folder. 4

5 Have you ever made changes to your photo, then saved them to the original your only copy then wished you hadn t? I have. Here is one way to avoid that. Create 2 folders copy your originals to one, then copy them again. And work only on the copies. 5

6 Someone told Teresa all her photos were upside down and she didn t know how to fix them. Very easy once you know how. Click on the photo to open it in Windows Photo Viewer. Click on the box at the bottom to rotate. 6

7 Just keep clicking until it is right side up. 7

8 I m going to get a little more technical and talk about image resolution. How do you like this beautiful photo of Teresa? Nice, huh? I got it off the GFWC website. Teresa and I go back to being District President together and I thought I would print it for my scrapbook. But when I printed it, NEXT SLIDE 8

9 Here is what I got. This doesn t look so good, does it? Many photos on the internet are too small have too low a resolution to print well. Who has downloaded a photo from the internet, saw it looked great on the screen, but it looked like this when you went to print? I ve done that, too, and it s frustrating to not get that great image on paper. We ll talk about how you can make sure that when you print your photos, you don t have this problem. Now no matter what you have been told in the past, NEXT SLIDE 9

10 At least when it comes to image resolution. Why care about resolution? Need enough picture resolution to have a good image to print, , etc. 10

12 So if you have a camera that is a 5 megapixel camera, it can take a photo at least this big. And most of your cameras today will do more even the cameras on many of your cell phones. A 10x13 would meet most if not all of your printing needs. 12

13 Next we re going to talk about how to set up your digital camera to you will get the resolution you need. 13

14 First is to think about what you will do with the photos. If all you are doing is taking photos of stuff to sell on Ebayor to post on Facebook, or look at on your camera or computer, then this lowest setting may be OK. BUT if you take lots of photos of your kids or grandkids and get a great photo that you want to print you can t. Not enough resolution. Get your camera out if you have it Find the menu items where it says picture size Comment on the size, what it will print, and the number of photos at that size. Disregard the EZ 14

15 Notice larger file size = fewer photos 40,381 for web-sized photos in last slide 15

16 If you do a lot of photo editing or cropping, use the largest size you have, so you can crop and still have enough resolution to print a photo. 16

17 Quality may also say fine, superfine, etc. Higher quality means more detail in your photos. Higher quality + higher resolution gives you more options with your photos. You can print. You can crop out a smaller part of the photo and still Have enough resolution to print. You can always downsize for or the web. But you generally cannot successfully upsize. 17

18 This is a reference page. Did a lot of looking to see what resolution size to recommend to you for printing. And it s all over the map. Who has used Shutterfly for printing photos? Shutterfly a good website for printing photos, making photo books, calendars, etc. Here are their recommendations. If you can t remember this, just click on Help. So if you ve followed my suggestions, you probably have a photo file too large to send to Shutterflyand will need to make it smaller. We ll talk about an easy way to do that in a few minutes. 18

19 Want to cover one more thing before we go to resizing photos. 4x6 is the same as a 3:2 ratio. Divide 6x4 by 2 and you will get 3:2. I did similar. I set my camera to the 4:3 ratio just not thinking and couldn t get my entire photo into the 4x6 format. I ll show you an example. 19

20 Was with June Dunlowlooking at photos on her new camera. Noticed that the photos were square or set to a 1:1 ratio. She loved this photo of Bobby with the grandkids, but it doesn t crop well. Had to cut off arms and legs. 20

21 So you have followed my recommendations on using a high quality and a large enough resolution to print your photos. But now you want to put them on Facebookor them to a friend. And now the photos are too big. You can download a simple tool or use standard photo editing software to make your photos smaller. OK to make your photos smaller, but often does not work to make them larger. They will look blocky and jagged like the photo of Teresa you saw earlier. Will show you the Resizer on the next slide. 21

22 The large size is great for or a webpage. DO NOT check the box Resize the original pictures (don t create copies). This photo resizer makes a copy of your photo with the original name plus Medium, large, etc. That way you can always go back to your original photo if you don t like the change you made. Windows 7 and higher comes with a standard program called Paint. You can also use Paint to resize your photos. 22

23 You want to send a photo to Debbie for the VA Clubwoman or to Janice for the website, but you want it to be large enough to print. You might can send Debbie your original file if it s not too big. But if you have looked at the website, you ll see that Janice wants a file no larger than 400 kb. What you have will be larger than that. You can change the image size using a custom size of 1800 x 1200 and it should be big enough to print without being way too big. We ll talk about why use the number

24 Attach vs. Add Photo Also, can see that the original file is TOO big 3.09 MB. Janice asks for 400 kb max for the website. So I resized it large and brought it down to 286 kb. Fine for web or and still large enough to print at a 4x6 size. 24

25 These terms are often used to mean the same thing, but they don t. We ve talked about resolution being the number of pixels or dots in the image. Recommendationsfor DPI or PPI range from depending on where you get your information. Shutterflyuses the lower size, some print shops use the higher size. This is why I gave a general guideline in the previous slide of multiplying your image size by 300 to get the number of pixels you need. You could also multiply by 250, but 300 is easy math. 25

26 Scanning at 300 DPI should ensure that you have enough image resolution for a good print. 26

29 Also including the instructions from Janice on sending photos to the GFWC VA website. She tells you to NOT check the best picture quality because it will give you a big file takes a long time to send to her and it takes up too much space on the website. Don t know what our limit it, but I m sure we don t have unlimited space. So be sure to resize your photo before sending it to her. 29
