Creating Family Trees in The GIMP Photo Editor A family tree is a great way to track the generational progression of your Sims, whether you re playing a legacy challenge, doing a breeding experiment, or just have that extra special family you want to show off.but how do you do it? This tutorial covers the basics of how to make a Sim family tree using The GIMP, which is a freeware image editor. You will need: The GIMP available for free download at (or any other image editing program that can handle layers.) Recommended: SimPE Step 1: Pictures! First you will need good screenshots of everyone you want in the family tree. Even if you don t normally play with the in-game snapshot picture quality on its highest setting, turn it up for this. You ll be glad you did. Pictures can be taken in a variety of ways. I use the in-game camera then crop the pictures as needed. If you have Bon Voyage or a later expansion you can get your Sims to pose for the camera using the Pose command. If you do not have Bon Voyage or later, but you do have University, you can use the Artist career reward, the Luminous Pro Antique Camera, which can be accessed by any Sim by using the unlockcareerrewards cheat in the cheat window to get access to all the career rewards. If you have posed your Sim using either the Antique Camera or the BV Pose menu option, they will smile and look at the camera. If you want to take a shot in ¾ profile, like so: You would pause the game and rotate the camera using either the mouse or the keyboard until you have the angle like you want it, then snap the picture (the C key). Do the same for all the other Sims in the family. It will be easier on you later if you try to have the camera zoomed in about the same for every Sim, just so they are the same size in the screenshots. This isn t necessary, but it does keep things consistent. By the same token, using the same background for all the pictures is also a good idea. Page - 1 -

Step 2: Finding and cropping your photos: Once you have these pictures taken you need to edit them to the proper size. If you are using the in-game camera to take pictures (and you have Windows XP) they can generally be found in the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Neighborhoods\X00X\Storytelling folder, where Username is your username for your account on your computer and X00X is the number of the neighborhood. N001 is Pleasantview, N002 is Strangetown, N003 is Veronaville, etc. If you have your game files set up to save to a different location, then you would find your screenshots in that location. The game assigns a series of letters and numbers to each picture, so when you enter the folder it will look something like this: Each picture you have taken will have two files in this folder - the snapshot, which is the larger file, and a thumbnail, which is a small copy of the same picture. They re the same series of numbers and letters, with the snapshot being preceded by the word snapshot and the thumbnail being preceded, oddly enough, by the word thumbnail. You want to use the snapshot files for your family tree. Page - 2 -

You might find it helpful to switch to thumbnail view, which will give you this: At this point you will want to rename the snapshots for your tree to something you can remember, such as the name of the Sim and the type of pose, as I have done above. You can delete the thumbnails at this point, as their only function is to make the pictures available in the in-game storybook. As we don t want these shots for that anyway, you can safely delete the thumbnails. Now that we ve found them and renamed them, we need to crop and resize them. Before you start cropping, decide on a size, either square or rectangular. Somewhere around 100x100 for square or 100x150 for rectangular is good, as that size is large enough to see well, yet small enough to fit plenty of pictures into a standard monitor s viewing area. If you do decide to use a rectangular picture, choose something with an easy to remember length to height ratio, such as 1.5:1 or 2:1 I ll explain why a little later. Page - 3 -

Choose one of the pictures and open it in your image editing program. Use the select rectangular regions tool (R in GIMP) to select your Sim s head shot. Don t worry about the size, we ll resize them later just make sure you have the correct aspect ratio. If you ve chosen to have square pictures, make sure your length and width are the same. If you ve chosen to have rectangular pictures, then keep the width to height ratio the same as the final size you ve chosen. For this sample tree my pictures will be rectangular with a 1:1.5 width to height ratio, so when I select the area I want to make sure I keep that ratio. GIMP has a box at the bottom of the editing window that tells you the size of your selection. I use multiples of 25 when I m selecting, just because it is easier to do the math in my head. My final size will be 100 pixels wide by 150 tall, so I make sure my selection is that same ratio so it doesn t get skewed later. Once you have the appropriate area selected, then choose Crop Image from the Image menu. Page - 4 -

Once we have the image cropped, then we need to scale it to its final size, which for this tutorial will be 100x150. We go back to the Image menu and select Scale Image, which pops up a new window, like so: The GIMP s Scale Image function is defaulted to linked scaling, meaning that when you change one value, width or height, the other value will change accordingly. This is represented by the chain icon to the right of the Width and Height numbers. If you wish to change only width or only height, then you can click on the chain to unlink it. For now, though, we do want to change both, so we leave the chain linked and just change the 250 to 100. The 375 will automatically change to 150, so we just have to click Scale and our picture will change size. Next, save the resized picture. If you wish to keep the original uncropped/unscaled shot, then click Save As and change the file name to something you will remember, such as SimName_Tree_Scaled.jpg. If you don t want to keep the original shot, then just save at this point. Repeat the cropping/scaling process for all of your family pictures. Once that is done then we can move on to the next step, assembling the tree. Page - 5 -

Step 3. Assembling the Tree Pictures: Now that we have all these pictures, we need to put them somewhere. Before we open an image, though, we should decide what color we would like our tree s background to be. I took all my pictures on a burgundy backdrop, so I have chosen a yellowish-beige background for my tree. To do that, I double-click the foreground color icon in The GIMP Control Panel to open the color selection dialog: When the color selection dialog opens, play with the color until you get something you like, then click OK. This has set the color as GIMP s Foreground Color. Now you re ready to set up your tree. Open a new image in GIMP. A new image dialog box will open. Here we set the image length and width choose something that will be large enough to hold all your current pictures plus give you some room to grow. We ll choose 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels for now (don t worry, you can expand it down the line if you run out of room later) and then open the Advanced Options detail, as shown here: Make sure the Fill with: choice has Foreground color selected, then click ok. Page - 6 -

Now you have your image where your pictures will go. Before we start dropping in pictures, though, we will make our lives a lot easier if we do some setup, first. GIMP has a handy tool called a grid that will help us line up our pictures. Select the tools menu and make sure Show Grid and Snap to Grid are selected. The grid will appear on your image to help you ensure your pictures are lined up. GIMP defaults the grid spacing to 10 pixels, which closer than we need let s change it to 25 pixels. To do that, go into the Image menu and select Configure Grid, then set the spacing to 25. We ll end up with something like this: Editing the tree later is much easier if you use layers, which is where the programs that can edit them come in really handy. Your background layer should only contain things that will never move or change, which is pretty much just the title. You can add a title by opening the text tool, which in GIMP is the T key. Choose your text font, color, and size, and then type your text into the text editing window that opens. Once you have your text like you want it, close the editing window and change to the move tool (M) and move the text into position. (Note: You have to have your cursor hovering over some of the text itself for the move tool to engage the cursor will look like a cross with arrows.) Once you have the text in position, right-click on the text and choose Layer -> Merge Down. This will merge the text onto the background layer. Now that our background layer is complete, we can add our picture layer and our text and connector lines layer. Page - 7 -

Open the layer dialog box by selecting Dialogs->Layers. The window that opens will look like this: Click the New Layer Icon (highlighted above) to add a new layer. A dialog box will open - choose transparency for the layer fill type, then select OK. Right-click on the new layer in the dialog box and choose Edit Layer Attributes, which will let your rename your layer. I use three layers in addition to the background, one for lines, one for pictures, and one for other information, so I rename the three layers accordingly, and end up with something like this: Now that we have our layers set up, we can start placing our pictures! First we have our founding couple, also known as the first generation, who we place at the top of the tree. If you have the grid displayed and the snap to grid on, as mentioned previously, it will be easy to line up the images. When you have them in place, move the cursor off the image. It will change to a little anchor, which means anchor the selection to the layer. Page - 8 -

Now that the first generation is placed, we can move on to the second. Place their children as you like generally I place them left to right, oldest to youngest. Once the pictures are placed, you might have something like this: If you decide you don t like something about the placement of the pictures, you can easily move them. (This is the reason for using layers, you don t affect the background or connector lines at all.) Just use the rectangular selection tool (Hotkey R ) to select the picture, cut (Ctrl+X) then paste (Ctrl+V). The picture will become a floating layer that you can move around and place again. Now, you ll notice in my above example that I ve offset their children to the left and added an extra picture with a Coming Soon note. Why? Well, I happen to know that Joshua and Kira (that s my first generation couple) are pregnant. I might as well make some room for that baby now! Yet another advantage to working with layers - I can easily replace that Coming Soon banner with an actual picture, once the baby is born. A little planning now goes a long way later. Page - 9 -

Lines: How are all these people related, anyway? We ll need to draw some lines to connect them up. To do this we ll go back to our layer dialog box and select the lines layer that we ve already set up. As the layers are transparent it isn t yet obvious, but we are now working with the layer below the picture layer. Switch to the Paint Hard-edged Pixels tool (Hotkey N ) and use the GIMP Control panel to choose a color and a line thickness. I am going to use a dark green color, and a 9-point line thickness, as shown: Now we draw lines between the portraits. Because we are working with the layer below the pictures, the lines we draw will automatically go underneath the pictures. Page - 10

To draw a line between the Generation 1 married couple, for example, we just have to click somewhere near the grid line in the middle of the portrait, and the line will snap to that. If we hold the shift key and click where we would like the line to end, that will draw a straight line between the two dots. Once we have all the lines drawn, we should have something like this: Great! Now we know how these people are connected but who are they? We need more information! This is where our Info layer comes in. We go back to the dialog box and choose the Info layer, and now everything we add will attach to that layer. First, we need some names. We add names to the info layer the same way we added the title to the background layer, by using the Text tool on the GIMP control panel. Choose a color - I m using black, as that s what I used for my title - and font size - I am using 18-point font. As before, we type our text into the editing window, then after we re done typing we close the window, change the text tool to the move tool, then move the text into position and then right-click on the text and choose Layer->Merge Down. Page - 11

When we re done with all the names, we will have something like this: You ll notice a few things here One, we have no name under the as-yet-unborn Sim. That s because we don t know his or her name yet! Next, I have offset the names to the right on each Sim. Why? So I can have room for more information! Like what, you ask? Well, that s where Icons come in! Page - 12

Icons: Icons are small pictures, usually from the game, that give more information about the Sims in the family tree pictures. For example, in this family tree, we can see that the first generation family founder, Kopi, was a fortune Sim, he was married to Felicity Nova, who was a Knowledge Sim, and they both got their lifetime wants. Where do we get these icons? There are many ways of getting them. One could take in-game screenshots and then edit the images so that only the icon remains, but an easier way is to get them directly from the game itself. This method does require SimPE, but it is not difficult, just time consuming. First, open your installation directory. Note, this is NOT where your saved games are located, this is where you told your computer to install The Sims 2. Find the subfolder for your most recent expansion pack, then navigate to the TSData\RES\UI\ folder, then find the UI.package file. Make a backup copy of this file (this way if you accidentally change something you can restore the backup) then open the UI.package file in SimPE. When the file opens, the SimPE screen will look something like this: Each one of the jpg/tga/png images are an icon or thumbnail from the user interface, or UI. Note that for Apartment Life there are over 1200 of them. Surely there is some useful stuff in here! Of course, to find it, we re going to have to go through these files, one by one by one. To do this, single-click on the top jpg/tga/png Image in the Resource list. Below the file list a picture of the icon will appear. Page - 13

In the case of the first icon in the above example, it seems to be a silhouette of a witch. Well, that might be useful. Let s extract it. (Note: because there are over 1200 icons in here, a good rule of thumb is that if you remotely think you might use it, ever extract it. Having icons you don t need is much easier than going back into this file to find something that you just know you saw, but didn t get at the time.) To extract an icon we want, simply click the export button then choose a file name and location. I have a Tree Icons subdirectory in my My Documents folder, and I choose a name that will make it easy to remember what the icon is, such as Witch_Wand for the one above. Once we have all these icons, we can add them to our tree. In the example below I have put a linked pair of rings to indicate that Joshua and Kira are married, and then added everyone s aspiration. Yay, we re done! Well, almost. Next we have to get it in a format to display to everyone so they can see our pretty Sims! First, save the file in its layered format. For The GIMP, this is the.xcf format. Now that we ve done that, let s clean it up for display. Basically all we need to do there is uncheck the show grid option in the View menu. Page - 14

Once we ve done that, then we can save the file as a jpeg this compresses the file into one layer, so don t save over your original, choose File->Save As and then pick a file name that will help identify the version of the tree. I usually use the family name and the current date, so something like TravisTree jpg And here we have the tree in its final format! Once we have it saved as a jpg then we can upload it somewhere (Photobucket, for example) and show it off! As the family grows we can easily move the pictures and lines around without changing the entire tree the layers make each section modular. If we need to move Laura to the left a bit so that we can fit in a spouse for Lincoln (once he grows up!) then we can do that without affecting the background at all, just the piece of the tree that we need to work with. But what happens a few generations down the road, when we don t have room anymore? Well, then we need to expand our tree. Page - 15

Step 4: Expanding the tree So, your Sims were fruitful and multiplied, and now you can t fit anyone else in your tree. What to do? Expand the image! Thankfully this is easy to do in GIMP. Simply choose Layer->Layer Boundary Size. A dialog box will pop up: Here we can choose how much to increase our length or width. If you want to only increase one value, not both, then click the chain to the right of the Width and Height values and then you will be able to adjust only one of the values. Note: this only changes the image size of the selected layer, so you will have to do this for each layer. Next select Image -> Fit Canvas to Layers, and then your image is resized. The new area of the image will be transparent, though, so for your background layer you will have to select the new area and fill it with the same color as the older area. Using this method we can make our family tree as big as we need to. Page - 16

Finally Phew, you made it to the end! Congratulations! As a thank you for slogging your way through this tutorial, I have a little reward for you. Click here to download a zip file containing all the game icons I have, including some that I have extracted, some that MsBarrows has extracted (and kindly given me permission to use) and a few icons that were made by MsBarrows (which she has also given me permission to share) for family trees, specifically the broken engagement icon and several twins icons, including one for alien twins!
