You don t take a photograph, you make it. Ansel Adams The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera. Dorothea Lange Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second. Marc Riboud A picture is a secret about a secret, the more it tells you the less you know. Diane Arbus Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst. Henri Cartier-Bresson When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice. Robert Frank The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness Yann Arthus-Bertrand A photograph is a moral decision taken in one eighth of a second. Salman Rushdie, Photography is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality. Alfred Stieglitz To consult the rules of composition before making a picture is a little like consulting the law of gravitation before going for a walk. Edward Weston For me, the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture. Diane Arbus I am a professional photographer by trade and an amateur photographer by vocation. Elliott Erwitt The biggest cliche in photography is sunrise and sunset. Catherine Opie Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still. Dorothea Lange Photography to me is catching a moment which is passing, and which is true. Jacques Henry Lartigue Photography helps people to see Berenice Abbott The art of photography is all about directing the attention of the viewer. Steven Pinker What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary raw materials are light and time. John Berger To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. Henry Cartier Bresson I went into photography because it seemed like the perfect vehicle for commenting on the madness of today s existence. Robert Mapplethorpe Nowadays shots are created in post-production, on computers. It s not really photography. Mary Ellen Mark Photography is a major force in explaining man to man. Edward Steichen Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what it appears to be. Duane Michaels People think because it s photography it s not worth as much, and because it s a woman artist, you re still not getting as much there s still definitely that happening. I m still really competitive when it comes to, I guess, the male painters and male artists. I still think that s really unfair. Cindy Sherman Computer photography won t be photography as we know it. I think photography will always be chemical. Annie Leibovitz The purpose of art is to raise people to a higher level of awareness than they would otherwise attain on their own. Brassai A hundred of a second here, a hundred of a second there even if you put them end to end, they still only add up to one, two, perhaps three seconds, snatched from eternity. Robert Doisneau Every artist has a central story to tell, and the difficulty, the impossible task, is trying to present that story in pictures. Gregory Crewdson It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter. Alfred Eisenstaed Photography is a love affair with life. Burk Uzzle Only photograph what you love. Tim Walker. Photography is about compromize. Rob Brown. LB LICHENA BERTINATO Photographer PORTFOLIO LB

VINTAGE MOOD Next stop Riding in the 50s The Wedding day LB

Vintage Mood Next stop Canon 5D Mark II

VINTAGE MOOD Next stop The project Vintage Mood started in 2013, is a revocation of past era such as the 40s and the 50s. In this body of work everything, from vintage props to costumes, is gathered together expressely for the camera. Historical locations are suggestive scenarios for imaging and creating stories. Inside the tradition of staged photography, the line between realism and fantasy is tied in an intruiging way, with many references to old b/w movies. Next Stop features different characters who casually embark in a journey in an old train carriage. This leads to curious encounters, bizarre situations and romantic farewells.

Vintage Mood Riding in the 50s Canon 5D Mark II

VINTAGE MOOD Riding in the 50s The serie features an imaginery day outdoor of four friends. The city background of Valdagno (in the province of Vicenza, Italy) with its giant textile factory now closed and the tiny bridge, once used for workers to cross the river, the park or the period school, is the set for a story of youthhood, friendship and love.

Vintage Mood The wedding day Canon 5D Mark II

VINTAGE MOOD The wedding day This body of work portrays a traditional wedding day in 50s Italy, with the family gathered in the house before going to church for the ceremony. With its prevailing middle-class setting, the story is pervaded by irony and satire of manners, according to the style of the Italian comedy.

GIGI S FRIENDS LB

Gigi s friends La Divina Canon 5D Mark II

GIGI S FRIENDS Gigi s friends features people elegantly dressed and made up as if in a black and white movie from the 30s. The serie is full of references to great movie stars of the past, such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. The location is Bar Dam, a historic Italian cafe of the 30s, a social gathering for elite in the community of Valdagno, the town of Marzotto, once the world s leading designer clothing manufacturer founded in 1835.

THE NOIR PROJECT LB

The Noir Project A gangster, a luggage and the femme fatale Canon 5D Mark II

THE NOIR PROJECT The Noir project combines the theme of the night with the staged approach. References goes to old film noir movies of spies, gangsters and femme fatales, not only for their intruiging plots but also for their peculiar visual language.

FUTURA LOCATION LB

Futura Location Telecom phone box Canon EOS 300V Kodak 100 Elite Chrome X-Pro

FUTURA LOCATION This is a visual research on the nighty roads of Veneto, a region in the North-East of Italy and also a voyage of self-discovery in the silence of the night. The majority of these works depicts vacant streets, abandoned houses, petrol stations and old phone boxes. The passage of time recorded by long exposures, creates seductive light effects and, in contrast, deep shadows. Experimentation with cross process (in this case positive film processed as negative) plays an essential role in the research for altered and acid colours.

BIOGRAPHY Lichena Bertinato studied Modern Italian Literature at the University of Padua and graduated with an experimental thesis on the relationship between writing and photography. Her approach to photography refers to the segment of contemporary photography known as staged or tableau-photography. More like a movie director than a photographer, with a cast of models/actors and a crew of assistants, Bertinato uses to stage her pictures. In inventing her motifs and shaping her photographic vision she weaves influences from literature to cinema, especially the tradition of old noir movies and the Italian comedy. She is currently studying at the University of the Arts-London College of Communication in London. She has been exhibited in London at Debut Contemporary Gallery and at Le Dame Art Gallery. Some works are showcased at the Italian collection hosted by Melia White House Hotel in London.
