2 Atmospheric Research Aircraft Technical Specification of Scientific Equipment Equipment title: ARIES Identification Number: H683 General description of installation: ARIES Airborne Remote Infrared Evaluation System is an infrared Michelson interferometer, which passively measures electromagnetic radiation in the micron range. Its intended location is the rear bay of the Large Radiometer Blister (LRB) on the BAe146. The power to the instrument is supplied via the operating electronics, which are situated on Radiometer Rack 2 (RR2) (shared with MARSS and DEIMOS components) on the starboard side towards the rear of the aircraft. I.E. power and data cables will have to be routed from the instrument in the LRB to the RR2 near the rear of the aircraft. The instrument requires not more than: 115V (all 3 phases); 230V. This power will drive the instrument and all the rack mounted computers, electronics and displays. The instrument does not generate any significant e/m radiation, it does not use radioactive sources, and does not contain any known hazardous chemicals. It is pressurised to 6psi above ambient with gaseous nitrogen. It contains one low power (2.5mW) laser. The scan drum can rotate once every 1 seconds, but spends most of its time stationary. On occasions pre-flight, it will be necessary for the instrument to have its nitrogen atmosphere topped up, requiring a cylinder of nitrogen. 4 Function and operation of ARIES IR Radiometer Please refer to the IRD, which gives a very good background to the instrument. The instrument arrangement is very little changed from that used on the C-130, apart from the fact that the optical box will be in the Large Radiometer Blister rather than being carried in a maxipod slung under the starboard wing, and the power supplies and control electronics boxes will be mounted on the top shelf of Radiometer Rack 1 (RR1). On the C-130 the control and display of ARIES was via a PC mounted in the van in the cargo hold. On the 146, the advent of 19 racking has allowed the CRT and keyboard to be replaced by a 1u high 19 unit on Radiometer Rack 2 (RR2). The PC will be mounted on the middle shelf of RR2. Main rack power distribution on each Radiometer Rack (RR1 & RR2) is via modules in 3u high 19 card frames. 4
5 Scientific Equipment Approval Conformity Statements ARIES is a scientific instrument not required for the safe operation of the aircraft. Thus any possible causes of failure of this instrument are considered from the no hazard to aircraft or occupants perspective rather than continued operation of this equipment. ARIES has previously been cleared by Boscombe Down and installed on Hercules XV208 in 1995, where it was flown without presenting a hazard to the aircraft or its occupants. Statements of Conformity 1.1 The design of ARIES and its components contain no known features inherently hazardous to the aircraft or its occupants. 1.2 Materials used in its construction are appropriate to the intended function. 1.3 Fabrication methods are appropriate to expected service conditions. 1.4 Fasteners used are appropriate to the installation environment. 1.5 Components are labeled to allow identification and function. 1.6 All the ARIES components were installed on the C-130 by A&AEE/DRA at Boscombe Down, and a Form 100 was issued. 1.7 Changes to the C-130 arrangement have been noted earlier in this document. 1.8 No flammable fluids are used in the ARIES. 1.9 No excessive noise is emitted All electrical components are designed to minimize the risk of electric shock, i.e. all metal shells are grounded. No component handled during normal operation is subject to a temperature rise likely to cause injury An electric motor is fitted in the scan head, however as this only rotates once in 1 seconds, and spends much of its time stationary, is not considered to be a high energy rotor 1.12 ARIES uses no fluids, refrigerants, or any hazardous chemical. It is pressurised with gaseous nitrogen to typically 6psi above ambient No hazard is likely to arise from operation of the equipment as a result of the changes in temperature or pressure within the normal flight envelope The instrument will not present a hazard as a result of changes in humidity Failure of the instrument due to shock or vibration is not considered to present a hazard to aircraft or occupants. No explosive substances are embodied in the instrument Waterproofness is not applicable as the instrument is mounted in the Large Radiometer Blister (LRB). Waterproofness of the LRB is an issue however, but is not addressed here The instrument has no inherent susceptibility to aircraft fluids such that would cause it to become a hazard Sand and dust ingress is not applicable as the instrument is mounted in the Large Radiometer Blister (LRB). Sand and dust ingress of the LRB is an issue however, but is not addressed here Fungus resistance is not applicable as the instrument is easily demountable for cleaning, will be inspected on a daily basis when fitted to the aircraft, and in any case is enclosed by the Large Radiometer Blister Salt spray may be an issue if the Large Radiometer Blister is likely to duct air through the instrumentation when at low level, however this will not affect the operation of the instrument, merely increase the cleaning duties required The instrument has no unusually high magnetic effects Failure of the instrument due to power input voltage spikes is not considered to present a hazard to aircraft or occupants The instrument is not unduly sensitive to audio frequency power inputs The instrument is not unduly sensitive to induced signal The instrument is not unduly sensitive to radio frequency inputs An EMC test should be conducted to establish the effect of RF emission The equipment is mounted within the Large Radiometer Blister, and is therefore not susceptible to direct lightning effects. Effects of lightning on the instrument are not considered to present a hazard. 5
6 1.28 Icing is not applicable as the instrument is mounted inside the Large Radiometer Blister. Failure Analysis 2.1 Failure to contain fluids: no flammable, toxic, corrosive or cryogenic fluids are used in this instrument. 2.2 Failure to contain lasers: one low power (2.58mW) laser is used in this instrument, and its beam is visible from outside the instrument. However, at no time will the beam point towards any part of the aircraft, and is thus not a hazard in flight. A warning notice should be present next to the ARIES apertures on the Large Radiometer Blister. 2.3 Failure of high energy rotating parts no high energy rotating parts are contained in this instrument. 2.4 Failure of components & pipework under pressure: ARIES contains a nitrogen atmosphere at typically 6psi - failure of pressure seals, valves, and joints is unlikely due to appropriate connectors and fasteners being used. 2.5 Failure of cooling provision: The optical box generally runs cool; it does contain a fan, although under most conditions the instrument does not get warm enough for it to switch on. No instrument coolers are required or fitted for the ARIES components mounted on the Radiometer Racks. 2.6 No part of the instrument is inherently prone to give rise to a hazardous heat source in the event of failure. 2.7 No part of the instrument is inherently prone to give rise to a hazardous ignition source in the event of failure. 2.8 Failure of joints that are regularly disconnected between flights is unlikely due to appropriate connectors being used. 2.9 Failure of electrical connections and components: electrical connections follow best practice. No electrical component failure has led to the creation of a hazard in previous operational experience with this instrument Failure leading to creation of source of electrical shock: electrical connections follow best practice. No electrical component failure has led to the creation of a source of electrical shocks in previous operational experience with this instrument. Main rack power distribution is via modules in a 3u high 19 card frame. The umbilical from the SSP is connected to this power distribution module. All individual outputs from this module go via appropriately rated circuit breakers. An additional umbilical connector is provided on the front panel of the power distribution module, for potential future connection to additional power distribution modules if required. Circuit breaker protection for this additional umbilical connector is provided directly by the SSP. 6
