5 Welcome to Schneider Optics Schneider Optics, a U.S. subsidiary of acclaimed German lens maker Schneider Kreuznach, represents a long history of extraordinary lenses and filters for many industries including still photography, television broadcasting, cinematography and digital projection. It s no wonder Schneider filters for motion pictures and digital cinematography are the finest in the industry. Consistent Precision Diamond cut from crystal-clear, water-white optical glass, Schneider filters are ground and polished to a precise flatness and plane-parallelism (exact parallel relationship between front and back filter surfaces). Then, to ensure perfection, this is verified by a laser interferometer. Schneider filters are then checked with a densitometer for consistent density, and tested with a spectrophotometer for proper light transmission. It s due to this ultra-high consistency, that allows cinematographers to swap like filters mid-shoot with no discernible variation in color or effect. What s more, the unprecedented purity, color saturation and repeatability of Schneider filters virtually eliminate the need for lab color timing correction. Ultra Durability Schneider filters stand up to the most rigorous demands on set or location. Many feature Schneider s specially formulated hard anti-reflective (AR) coating to resist flaking, peeling and scratching. This proprietary coating also reduces light loss and flare to less than 1% per surface, compared to untreated glass that has a light loss of 4% per surface. Schneider screw-in filters feature virtually jam-proof brass precision mounting rings, while unmounted Schneider laminated filters are protected against delamination and edge-chipping by Schneider s unique Edge Seal, which also reduces edge reflection and edge flare. Schneider Filters Work with Long Lenses The common perception among photographers and cinematographer s is that filters should not be used in front of long length lenses, due to the critically short depth of field of these lenses. This belief is often confirmed when poorly made glass or plastic-resin filters are placed in front of a long lens, and the degradation of the image is visible simply by looking through the viewfinder. This degradation is caused by poor quality control, low-quality glass and poor glass grinding and polishing techniques used in the manufacture of such filters. Schneider filters have no such problems, and can be used in front of even the longest lens. Diamond-cut from high-quality optical glass, then ground and polished to precise lens-making standards, Schneider filters offer unsurpassed clarity, light transmission and color saturation with absolutely no visible compromise of image quality. Even when stacked, they are the clear choice for use with any lens. Web: mptv@schneideroptics.com Page 5

6 GLOSSARY 81EF: Pale orange warming filter that can be used to control the bluish cast in images shot on cloudy days or in open shade. It can also be used simply to warm up a shot or to enrich skin tones. 81-Two and 81-One: Born from the 81-A, both filters are designed to add warmth to skin tones and reduce excessive blue in outdoor open shade. The 81-Two is used to accentuate skin tones for a warmer appearance. For a subject with darker skin tones, the 81-One is more appropriate. Ideal for romantic close-ups, the 81 Series can be combined with softening filters. 85: Used to correct the color of tungsten balanced film when shooting in daylight. Achromat Diopter: Increase the minimum working distance enabling closer focus from a greater working distance. Achromatic Diopters offer increased image performance over traditional single element diopters. Amber: Can simulate the effect of candlelight or a fire lit scene. Antique Suede: Accentuates earth tones. Works well for period scenes requiring warm antique look. Black Frost : A fine "black" mist (similar to Black SupaFrost & Black Promist). Subtle softening of skin texture. Flairs highlights and tones down contrast while holding black level. Removes video "edge". Chocolate: Natural warming effect. Helps smooth transition between black and white complexions. Classic Black Soft: Combines the benefits of Classic Soft with the subtle effects of Black Frost 1/8. Ideal for closeups, and can be used to facilitate a seamless transition in the look and continuity from scene to scene. Classic Soft : Contains hundreds of Micro-Lenslets evenly distributed throughout the filter. Classic Softs create a unique softening effect that helps smooth-out blemishes and minimize wrinkles. The stronger grades (1 & 2) help add mood to scene by causing highlights to glow softly. Classic Soft, HD: Designed to allow shooting in all HD formats without fear of artifacts, the HD Classic Softs offer the same unique softening effect of the original Schneider Classic Softs. Classic Sunset: Works with a wide range of focal lengths to enhance an existing sunset or create the illusion of an orange flame sunset where none exists. Clear: Protect expensive front elements and other filters while providing the truest image, free of unwanted color shifts. Color Temperature Blue: Blue filter which corrects tungsten light towards daylight. Similar to Kodak Wratten 80D and 80C series. Coral Filters: Considered to be both color-correction and color-effects filters, Schneider Coral filters are used to warm cool lighting situations such as overcast days and scenes in open shade. Different strengths of Schneider Coral filters can be used during filming to achieve the same degree of apparent warmth under different light conditions. This makes them particularly useful for maintaining a consistent color balance throughout an entire day of shooting, or to create a sunset or dawn effect during the day. Schneider Coral filters can be used to undercorrect a scene in order to create an excessively blue look for added drama, and can also be used as warming filters to create other dramatic effects. Day for Night: Simulate moonlight conditions. 4-stop light loss. DigiCon : Raises black levels while lowering highlights. Combined with in camera gamma settings and / or post production, a higher dynamic range can be recorded. The result is more detail in highlight and shadow areas with no loss of resolution or softening of the image. Filter produces no color shift and highlights are clean and halo-free. Page 6

7 GLOSSARY (Continued) Diopter (Close-up) Full Field: Increase the minimum working distance enabling closer focus from a greater working distance. Diopter (Close-up) Split Field: Increase the minimum working distance enabling closer focus from a greater working distance on half of the frame. Double Classic Black Soft: For in focus diffusion plus a heavier Black Frost effect, without filter stacking. Combines the features of the Schneider Classic Soft with a Black Frost 1/4. Enhancing Filter: Improves the color saturation of reds, oranges, and earth-tone colors such as rust, brown and amber and green. Works well on landscapes. Gold: For an overall warming effect. Portrays healthy skin tones & accentuates foliage. Golden Sepia: For old film look with the addition of a warm golden tone. Graduated Filter: Part clear and part color. They are designed to be used in professional matte boxes, so that they are readily positioned at the exact angle required to create desired effects. Graduated Hard Edge: The hard graduation from the filter effect to clear can be used with telephoto lenses or for bold transitions. Graduated Soft Edge: The soft graduated transition from the filter effect to clear on this filter can be used with wide to medium-angle lenses because these lenses have greater depth of field. Green CC: Used for black and white cinematography. Ideal for nature cinematography, it is good for darker reds and lighter greens. Hollywood Black Magic : Combines the best attributes the Schneider HD Classic Soft and Black Frost filters. Pleasant softening of bright highlights helps control the exposure while maintaining rich blacks and colors. LowCon-2000: Lowers contrast and spreads light into shadow areas. Magenta CC: Corrects florescent lighting and can also be used for special effects in music videos. Maui Brown: Enhances browns, golds, and foliage, while holding the overall white level. Good for skin tones. Improves color contrast in architecture and landscape with flat lighting conditions. Neutral Density: Schneider Neutral Density (ND) filters are designed to control exposure or depth of field under various lighting conditions without affecting color or contrast. Unlike other brands, Schneider Absorptive ND filters are a neutral gray, achieved with laboratory precision. ND Attenuator: Constant graduation across the entire filter area which is most dense at the top graduating to lighter densities at the bottom. Designed to control overall exposure and/or various lighting conditions, without affecting color or contrast. ND Combo Grad: Help balance exposure and/or compensate for the limited dynamic range of digital cameras. In all densities, the additional soft edge is two stops more than the lower half of the filter. ND Dual Grad: Offers a clear area separating 2 graduated ND attenuator sections. One section covering 2/3 of the glass graduates from the darker density to the central clear, while the smaller 1/3 goes from the lighter density at the edge to the clear section. Paradise Blue: Adds vibrant blue color to washed out sky. Page 7

8 GLOSSARY (Continued) Platinum Series IRND: Removes infrared spectrum from light path for rich deep shades of black in daylight scenes combined with ND designed to control exposure or depth of field without affect color or contrast. Uses absorptive technology and is free of off-axis color shift regardless of the focal length and can be stacked without introducing reflections. Can also be used as a standard ND filter with all HD video and Film cameras. IRND filters are neutral gray and do not require additional in camera white balance. Polarizer, Circular True-Pol : To prevent viewfinder black-out on cameras which employ polarizing elements in the beamsplitters of the viewing system, like Arriflex 435 and MovieCam Compact. Polarizer, Linear True-Pol : This is by far the most effective polarizer for motion picture and television cameras. Having an extinction ratio of ER 374, the Schneider True-Pol is 12- times more effective than other polarizing filters, and is unmatched in its ability to reduce glare and unwanted reflections, saturate colors, deepen blue skies, improve contrast, and penetrate haze. True-Pol Polarizing filters enable you to achieve a level of optical performance previously unavailable to cinematographers. Polarizer, One-Stop: While the standard True-Pol is 1-3/5 stops, the One-Stop Linear Polarizer significantly reduces reflections while reducing available light by just one stop. Sahara Gold: Especially useful in creating a rich warm scene for an old Technicolor look. This filter approximates 3/4 the color value of an 85 and can also replace an 81EF for a cool look. This filter holds skin tone better than an 81EF. Sapphire Blue: Adds indigo blue color. Storm Blue: Adds grey green color to ocean and sky for a stormy effect. Tobacco: For an old west period look. True-Cut IR: Removes the IR spectrum from the light path for rich deep shades of black in daylight scenes. Uses reflective technology and must be stacked as the farthest filter from the lens to avoid internal lens reflections. Can cause off-axis color shift if used with wide angle lenses. True-Match Vari-ND : Allows the user to select the lens f/stop and camera speed independent of ambient light conditions. Works by taking two carefully matched filters and stacking them in combination to produce a density range from 1-1/3 stop loss to 11 stops of light loss with no blue color shift. True-Streak : Clearly the most effective and exciting way to simulate the anamorphic blue streak effect with virtually any lens, anamorphic or not. Long, brilliantly colored streaks emanate from bright lights and highlights. Available in four strengths: 1mm (strongest), 2mm, 3mm and 4mm (most subtle); and in eight colors: Blue, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Violet and Pink as well as Clear. UV-410 Haze: Reduces or eliminates photographic haze in areas where the atmospheric conditions contain a heavy concentration of dust particles, water droplets, and pollution. White Frost: A fine "white" mist (similar to White SupaFrost & White Promist). Lowers contrast, flairs highlights and tones down colors, while creating a subtle dream-like effect. Black Frost, Classic Soft, DigiCon, Hollywood Black Magic, Micro-Lenslets, True-Match Vari-ND, True-Pol, True-Streak, and "It Starts With The Glass " are trademarks of. Page 8
