I m taking Diploma in Arts and Creative Industries this year. My interest lies in photography and designing. 4 Project 1 Photographic Montage Starting with three horribly distressed and damaged images, this montage is the end result of an exercise in print preparation, retouching, adjustments and masking. The aim of this project was to seamlessly blend three separate photographs together to create an image that looks like a single photograph as opposed to a number of images pasted together, regardless of how wacky or far-out the subject matter may have been. The skills gained in this project are essential in the graphic design field. 5 Project 2 DVD Menu Design The purpose of a DVD main menu screen is twofold: to help users navigate to the various parts of the DVD, and to communicate the tone, themes and story of the film or television show it is representing. This project involved a more creative approach to what was essentially another photomontage exercise. All images and illustrations were self-generated and were manipulated and montaged in Photoshop. A simulation of the menu system was created through the use of visible and invisible layers. This document has been set up for on-screen display; its colour mode and resolution, in particular, would not be suitable for print. <Back to Content Page > FINAL PORTFOLIO.indd 5 5

6 Project 3 Logo Reconstruction As a first foray into the world of vector graphics, this project involved the duplication of a logo design using basic geometry and shape construction tools in Illustrator. To gain experience with these tools, the logotype was also constructed in this fashion rather than using a generic typeface and converting it to outlines. The application of the logos to the various pieces of merchandise involved the use of the envelope distort functions, which warped the design to create the illusion of it being applied to a three-dimensional surface. 6 <Back to Content Page > FINAL PORTFOLIO.indd 6

8 Project 4 Vector Portrait Creating a vector illustration using a photographic image as a template is a very useful skill to have as a designer and illustrator. The difficulty with this sort of project is working out how to abstract and simplify the detail of the photographic image into something that will work well for a stylised, very graphic illustration. This project was also the class s first experiment with the pen tool one of the most important and useful tools in the creation of vector graphics. 8 <Back to Content Page > FINAL PORTFOLIO.indd 8

As opposed to physical colouring techniques (or indeed, beginner digital colouring techniques), the colouring process in Photoshop involves applying colour underneath the lines, rather than inside the lines. This helps to avoid any problems with the anti-aliasing of the linework. With practice, the process of rendering in Photoshop can be useful in very quickly creating elements of a design that would otherwise be difficult to photograph. The judicious use of Photoshop filters facilitated the creation of textures in the rendering that could then be applied to the colours and gradients that were created in the initial stages of the project. The card reproduction involved creating a four-page InDesign document that utilised master pages, swatches, layers, text boxes, colourised greyscale images and packaging.
