3 Von Arkel CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations on purchasing a Von Arkel frame! Our Calibre 7.95 Buffalo horn range is made out of high quality natural buffalo horn and therefor needs all the appropriate handling and care it deserves. The following recommendations aim to inform you about the essential handling aspects of this particular model, in order to maintain its quality and maximize its longevity.

4 1. ADJUSTMENTS 4. CLEANING For any fitting ajustments, we recommend getting assistance from your personal qualified optician who will have the necessary tools to perform any adjustements to your liking for an optimal fit. Cleaning the frame and lenses must be done with the include Von Arkel soft wipe. It is not recommended using water for cleaning, as water infiltration might cause cracks and losing the natural colour of the horn might occur fast. 2. MAINTENANCE Your glasses might need a clean up or a simple polishing from time to time. In such a case, we recommend the following procedure: With time, the frame will naturally lose of its shine. To obtain a clean and shiny polished surface, we advise to repeat the process above. Remember, your personal optician will happily take care of the maintenance and polishing with the adequate creams and tools for an optimal result. 3. Apply a dedicated polishing cream using a clean and soft cloth If the frame has any spots or dirt of any kind, apply a first layer or polishing cream and wipe until clean. Once the first cleaning is done, apply a second layer of polishing cream or oil and let the frame rest for a couple of hours before polishing with a clean and soft cloth. It is important to let the cream/oil impregnate the material, as a way to nourrish the horn and keep it as new. STORAGE We recommend always storing your glasses in the included Von Arkel box. In that way, it will be protected from shocks and from sunlight which can alter the original colours overtime. Please also keep the Von Arkel box in a dry area, away from light and heat sources (>50 C). 5. WARRANTY Von Arkel frames offers 2 years of warranty for quality or design issues. The applicable warranty does not include inappropriate manipulation of the frames, damages due to shocks, impacts or misshandling, nor wrongful use in conditions which are strictly advised against (sports, high temperatures ). 6. IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS Do not put the glasses in contact with vaporised products (lacquer, steam, perfumes ) or liquids (water, milk ). Furthermore, avoid contact with any chemical substances that would, in any possible way, alter the horn or the other components leading to an anticipated weakening or deterioration of the glasses. Avoid contact with any heat source (fire, halogen source ), which may alter the original design of the glasses and/or structure of the frame, as well as risk a fire hazard. Minimize prolonged exposure to sunlight (window display or windshield with direct sunlight ). We strongly recommend storing the glasses away from sunlight as well in order to avoid changes in colour and the possibility that the natural horn will dry out, leaving it prone to cracks. Do not under any circumstances clean your natural buffalo horn frames with an ultrasound bath.

5 Lenses SELECTION & POLISHING Choose lenses which s curve fit the shape of the frame as much as possible, or adapt the frame s pre-flexion to correspond to the lens shape (following the detailed procedure below). Choose lenses which s size and shape are adapted to the frame s overall design and dimensions. If necessary, slightly reduce the nose-side or temple-side edges to avoid constraining in those areas. For rectangular-shaped lenses, it s possible to reduce the width of the lenses and increasing the height proportionally: the frames are more supple on their vertical axis. The accepted depth of the inner grove for rimmed glasses is 0.5mm. Round off the chamfers edges before inserting the lenses!

6 Frame HEATING Avoid heating and bending the parts where the horn is in contact with the metal as well as the junction between the hinge and the frame. Never insert lenses in a natural buffalo horn frame without heating the frame first! Adjusting THE FRAME Natural horn absorbs and slowly transmits heat, thus the importance of heating carefully without interruption, so the heat can reach all parts of the frame evenly. Bring up the temperature of the frame heater to a maximum after the inital heating phase (100 C C).

7 Lenses MOUNTING Evenly heat the frame during 8 seconds while rotating it continuously over the frame heater. Stop for 8 seconds to let the heat penetrate and allow the buffalo horn to soften. Repeat the procedure 2 or 3 times, or 5 to 6 times with 6 seconds cooloff periods (instead of 8 seconds) if the frame is thicker. After the heating process is done, start by inserting the lenses in the top bezel and finish with the bottom bezel. Lenses DISMOUNTING Heat the frame during 4 second intervals (depending on the thickness of the frame) and gently remove the lenses from the inside out.

8 Adjusting THE TEMPLES Bring up the temperature of the frame heater to a maximum after the inital heating phase (100 C C). Be careful while bending the temples: always follow the temples curvature. Be sure to heat the entire temple for roughly 8 seconds by rotating it over the heat source. Then, heat the temple while applying pressure on the exterior of the curved edge, until the temple curls. Quickly bend the temple, a bit further than what you wish for and let it cool down. A contraction (or simple fold) results in a smaller radius; a stretch results in a larger radius. Heat the temple again and adjust the radius to the desired shape and size. By heating and bending in the opposite direction, the bent spot is relieved from to much constraint and will more easily retain its shape in time. For further adjustement, move away slightly the temple from the heat source to avoid unwanted material bending and overheating.
