1 Manual for BMS E1 eplan series, compound microscope The compound microscope allows it to study, at cell level, structures of textures of botanical and zoological nature. (e.g. slides of roots, leaves and stems or blood, skin and hairs). The total magnification of this microscope lies between times. By using different accessories, this magnification can be expanded. BMS E1 series comes with adjustable halogen illumination. Always disconnect mains plug from power point before maintenance Applicable for: BMS E1 series. For article numbers, see below. 1: Scope of delivery (numbers refer to the photo on page 4): 1) Eyepiece WF 10x/18 mm, with pointer. Two eyepieces in case of BMS E1 binocular and BMS E1 trinocular 2) Monocular, binocular or trinocular head, with prism. 360º rotatable 3) Screw to secure microscope head (2) 4) Full metal stand 5) Full metal base with electrical parts and main lead 6) Nose piece, quintuple, revolving. 7) Objectives, DIN e-plan (with plastic containers) 4x/N.A. 0,10 10x/N.A. 0,25 40x/N.A. 0,65 spring loaded 100x/N.A. 1,25 spring loaded, oil immersion 8) Coaxial coarse and fine adjustment 9) Fuse 10) On-off switch 11) Lamp house with condenser lens 12) Illumination adjustment 13) Iris diaphragm, to adjust light intensity towards slide. Abbe condenser lens N.A. 1,25 rack and pinion 14) Blue filter 15) Stage 16) Integrated mechanical stage with coaxial XY adjustment. 17) Adjustable slide protection 18) Dust cover (not in photo) Dimensions : 50 x 38 x 27 cm Weight : ca. 8,1 kg
2 To prevent condensation of the optical parts, it is recommendable to let the microscope get adapted to the room temperature while still in the original packing 2: To get started Put the plug into a earthed power point (see if the right voltage is provided). Switch on the lamp. To guide the light through the slide and the optical system in the most efficient way, the iris diaphragm and condenser should be adjusted as follows: open the iris diaphragm (13) totally rotate the nose piece (6) to place objective 4x in line with the slide remove the eyepiece (1) from the tube (2). In BMS E1 binocular and trinocular removal of one eyepiece is enough. close the iris diaphragm until 70-80% of the light is still allowed to pass place the eyepiece back in the tube The clarity of the image depends upon the size of the aperture (opening of the iris diaphragm). As the aperture becomes smaller, the contrast and depth of focus increases, but the resolving power decreases. The right combination of these factors resolve into the clearest image. When using an objective with a different numerical aperture (N.A.) proper focussing of the Abbe condenser is important. Adjust the Abbe condenser by turning it up or down. Make sure that the field of view is evenly illuminated. Place the slide on the stage (15), open the integrated mechanical stage (16), secure the slide. Make sure the objective with the smallest magnification (4x) is above the slide. Use coarse adjustment, the biggest, inside, knob on the coaxial axis (8), to focus the specimen. After this, the fine adjustment, the smallest, outside, knob on the coaxial axis (8), is used to refine the image. By revolving the nose piece, and bring another objective in the path of light, a different total magnification will be reached. If magnification is increased step by step (revolving nose piece to objective with higher magnification), usually focussing can be done just using fine focussing adjustment. 3: Safety notes Only use earthed power points. Before maintaining, opening or cleaning the microscope make sure the mains plug is disconnected from the power point. Clean the optical parts only with a soft cloth. Do not touch the lenses with your fingers. Do not soak the lenses in cleaning liquids. Do not allow any contact between liquids and electrical parts. 4: Replacing bulb Read point 3, Safety notes, carefully Wait until the temperature of the microscope and electrical parts are cool Never touch the bulb with naked fingers Be sure of using the same type of spare bulb as used in the microscope The halogen light can be changed by laying the microscope gently on its side. On the front side of the bottom there is a black flat screw which holds the lamp holder in place. The lamp holder can be opened by pulling the black screw. Now the lamp
3 holder opens and the lamp appears. The lamp can be removed by pulling it upward. Insert the new lamp ( Do not touch the lamp with your naked fingers ) and close the lamp holder until it is locked in place. 5: Replacing fuse (9) Read point 3, Safety notes, carefully Wait until the temperature of the microscope and electrical parts are cool The fuse is located on the back of the stand Use a screw driver to open the housing of the fuse by turning it counter clockwise Take broken fuse out Replace new fuse after being sure of using same rating in new fuse Screw fuse holder back in place 6: Storage Store the microscope in a dry and dust free area. Always use the dust cover (18). For carrying case see the accessory list. 7: Accessories BMS Description Art.
