2 What are the major repositories of digitized information relating to Vijayanagara history? They can be broadly broken into two major categories : 1. Offline : Manuscript/archival collections of various oriental institutes, private collections, government archives etc. Manuscripts are being catalogued & digitized under the National Mission for Manuscripts Online : Huge digital repository of rare and hard to find journals, books, periodicals etc. The format of digitization is usually as a scanned image, pdf file or text file. Depends on the agency digitizing the texts. Biggest repository is the Digital Library of India.

3 1.Offline Sources : National Mission for Manuscripts The National Mission for Manuscripts was established in February 2003, by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Government of India. India possesses an estimate of five million manuscripts, probably the largest collection in the world lakhs Manuscripts have been documented. Web-based National Database of Manuscripts with information on two million manuscripts. 1st and 2nd Phase of the Digitization of manuscripts project is completed and 3rd phase is in process. Total 1.02 lakhs manuscripts (1.5 Crore Pages) have been digitized. The Mission collects data on manuscripts located in a variety of places, from universities and libraries to temples, mathas, madrasas, monasteries and private collections.

7 Sources of copyright free maps: 1. Perry-Castañeda Collection: Extensive collection of rare maps. Plus has dozens to links to other websites with historical maps. 2. Historical Map of India Project (HMIP) : This aim of this project is to deliver high quality copyright free maps which can be utilized by anyone with an interest in Indian history.

11 Essential Software : 1. Install the AlternaTIFF plugin for Windows: This is necessary to view the TIFF files in your internet browser ( i.e. Firefox, Internet Explorer etc). 2. Install a Download Manager software: In our case we will be using a free software known as FlashGet. Optional Software : 1. Adobe Acrobat full version: This is necessary if you want to combine the files into a single PDF.

20 Step 9 : Pasting the Image location link 1. Paste the image location link in the URL option. 2. Delete the last three digits of the link location and substitute with (*)

22 Step 11 : Filling the Options 1. The From option asks you to enter the range of pages. E.g. 0 to 342 or 1 to In the Wildcard bytes option enter the number of digits in the total number of pages. E.g. for a 256 page book, the Wildcard byte will be 3.

23 Step 1 : Select the Download location 1. Clicking on OK brings you to this screen. Here you will select the download location for the file. 2. Click on the Browser button.

28 Step 16 : Common glitches Pause Button Start Button For some pages the download can get stuck. In this case select the relevant pages, press Pause and then start the download for the pages again.

30 Step 18 : Open Adobe Acrobat 1. Click on File. 2. Click on Combine 3. Select Merge Files into a Single PDF.

31 Step 19 : Select folder 1. The Combine Files screen comes up. 2. Click on Add Files 3. Select Add Folders.

32 Step 20 : Check the order of images 1. All the images are populated. 2. Check if order of pages is correct.

33 Step 21 : Save As 1. The combining of images will take a few minutes. 2. At the end of it the Save As screen pops up. 3. Name the file and click Save.
