3 1. Overview The Wall Art Learning Series (WALS) is a series of individual workshops designed as professional development opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists and managers. Workshops are intended to give participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the mural art field, connect with each other, and gain practical skills for career success. Workshops are held throughout the year in locations across Toronto. Topics seek to fulfill needs in the mural arts community and are chosen based on feedback from participants and contacts in the field. Mural Routes held 12 WALS workshops in 2017: Topic Instructor Date Location Funding Murals Linda Plater January 19 Bluffs Gallery Photoshop for Mural Artists: An Introduction (3 part series) Karen Roberts February 9, 16 & 23 Bluffs Gallery Utility Box Murals Project Management for Murals 101 Lillie Zendel, StART, Michael Cavanaugh, Bell Box Mural Project, Margaret Cresswell, Artist, and Robin Hesse, Artist March 23 Bluffs Gallery Karin Eaton April 20 Bluffs Gallery Working at Heights STS Group May 6 Mural Routes Health and Safety for Murals Michael Brown May 13 Rosetta School MURALS: The Fine Print Vandana Taxali May 17 Centennial College Graffiti Art Mediah, graffiti artist June 10 & July 22 Mural Routes Applied Colour Theory John Nobrega July 15 Mural Routes Mosaic Cristina Delago August 15 & 17 Mural Routes Stenciling Rob Matejka September 21 Mural Routes 3
4 2. Goals and Outcomes The Wall Art Learning series aims to provide opportunities for mural artists and managers to: Learn and develop practical skills for career success Connect with other individuals in the mural art field Discuss important topics in the field Learn from experts on specific mural-related topics Share with and learn from each other 124 participants In total 124 individuals attended Wall Art Learning Series workshops in Of these, 8 attended more than one workshop in the year. In participants words: Very detailed information and practical process steps to get started on murals through Bell boxes and traffic light boxes Learning a new artistic medium and how to use it - best was the history, culture, "rules" of the farm. This was excellent! Loved the history & the hands on aspect (basically the whole thing) 2018 Wall Art Learning Series Participant Map 4
5 24 WAH certifications Like in 2016, and with funding from StreetARToronto, Mural Routes was able to offer the Working at Heights certification at a greatly discounted rate. This certification was offered twice to a maximum of 12 participants per session. Each class was taught by an accredited instructor from STS Group. Participants practice with harnesses during Working at Heights certification, May 2017 One of the most successful WALS was Graffiti Art. Due to the high demand, this workshop had to be scheduled twice. This workshop is facilitated by MEDIAH, an internationally renowned visual artist and a trendsetter who sparks new ideas and originality by blurring the lines between post-graffiti and dynamic abstraction. MEDIAH is part of CBS- Can't Be Stopped, one of the most prolific and respected international graffiti labels based out of Los Angeles. Participants practice with aerosol during Graffiti Art 5
6 3. Looking Ahead As we continue the Wall Art Learning Series in coming years, we hope to continually grow and develop the program, continuing with aspects that have worked well and making changes as needed. We plan to continue to: Reach out to participants and contacts in the mural art field for suggested topics based on knowledge gaps in the field Work with experts in specific topics to bring high-quality education to our participants Our goals for future developments include: Work in partnership with other organizations to host our workshops at different venues throughout the city of Toronto in order to be more accessible Track feedback from both participants and instructors more consistently so as to provide comparative data Develop a plan to reach our target audience as well as new participants Offer WALS topics that are unique to the mural art sector and which are not being offered by any other organization, aiming to stay relevant Look at different ways to generate revenue through the WALS series Left: Participants creating mosaics with Cristina Delago Right: Participants listen to panelists during Utility Box Murals WALS session 6
