Participate in The Artistic Event of Monaco s Summer Graffiti Art of pressionism This major exhibit celebrates in Monaco the 40 th anniversary of the Graffiti Movement and officially names this Art form as «Pressionism». 500 major works of the greatest international artists will document the past 40 years of the last visual movement of the late twentieth century. In the heart of the Principality of Monaco The Grimaldi Forum is one of the most important Cultural centers of the Mediterranean. This summer, the Pressionism exhibition will make the headlines: 40, 000 visitors are expected in more than 2000 m 2 of exhibition space comprised in the Diaghilev and Nijinsky exhibition halls; visitors will benefit an additional 1200 m 2 of space on the plaza and the terrace, which overlooks the ocean.
Birth of Pressionism Quik On July 21, 1971, the New York Times reveals a new form of graphic expression, Tag, and its author, the legendary Taki 183. To the first lines of the marker are very soon added the pressure of spray can, which enriches the color of the artworks and heightens artistic rivalries. Art «under pressure» is born in New York «Pressionnism, 40 years of Graffiti» traces this history with more than 500 works, mostly unpublished, from the 70s up until today. This major summer exhibition celebrates the 40 th anniversary of Graffiti Art, officially names the Art Form, and ingraves it in the Art History. Pressionism is named in Monaco Bando
of pressionism History of the artistic movement 40 years to the day, July 21, 1971, the whole world discovered in a New York Times article a new form of graphic expression, initiated by a person whose interview would turn into a Legend: Taki 183 («Taki», for his full name Demitrius, followed by 183, his street number). These tags, codified signatures, flourished in New York and other major US cities, covering walls and fences before spreading to train cars, mobile media displays of their art works. Taki 183 The black marker at the origin of Tag is quickly replaced by spray can, providing color and surface to Graffiti Art. The most creative artists such as Blade, Stayhigh, Seen, Phase 2 and many others invent new styles: letters, bubbles, clouds, Wild Style, three dimensional contours and vibrant colors. In the early 80s, Futura and Squat import graffiti in France where Bando, a Franco American painter, establishes graffiti in Saint-Germain-des-Pres with Spirit, Blitz and Psyckoze. The artists paint the banks of the Seine river, the fences of the Louvre renovation site before taking possession of the Stalingrad wasteland, the territory of Jayone, Skki and Ash, for their first international gathering. The movement exploded in France, then all around Europe and has now reached, from Brazil to China, the five continents.
Pressionism The Art of The Italian word graffiti is derived from the greek word graphein which means to write or to paint. Very soon the search for the most beautiful form of writing transforms ordinary writers into painter-calligraphers, with their sketchbook in hand, working every day to invent their lettering, their own «under pressure» style. Pressure of Aerosol The main instrument for painting, spray can, is extremely difficult to master. The distance, speed, tilt of the aerosol can and the pressure on its cap determine the width and density of the line. Pressure of artists. Grouped in a fraternity or crew, artists must accomplish a feat to be anointed by their peers and establish their rank. Through these artistic and care-free games on multiple types of surfaces, different styles of paintings are created, from Figurative to Wild Style. Min Pressure of the city. As a sociological phenomenon, Graffiti allows the recognition of one s name in the heart of an impersonal city. The Art of Graffiti is not a protest movement but rather one of individual and collective indentification. There is a strong incentive to make the greatest art works on urban spaces, real challenges to the full scale of their talent. Public pressure. As soon as 1972, thanks to the UGA (Union of Graffiti Artists), these artists exhibit their paintings in New York galleries. However, graffiti does not meet museum recognition; moreover, the general public s negative opinion is reinforced by official art critics pressure and the lack of Graffiti in the contemporary art fairs. It was not until 2009 at the great international exhibition «TAG at The Grand Palais» that graffiti art and the talent of its artists is fully recognized
Biography Alain-Dominique Gallizia curator of the exhibit Alain-Dominique Gallizia, architect, collector and philanthropist, was among the first to understand the importance of this art movement and has brought together the largest painted heritage of Pressionism. From an unexpected night meeting in Gare du Nord train station, a dialogue unfolds with artists whose works adorned the walls of his buildings sites. A mutual commitment was born from this meeting; the artists agreed to come and paint pictures in his studios in Boulogne-Billancourt, now known as «The Tag Hive». In exchange Alain-Dominique Gallizia agrees to preserve their work and to promote their talent to the public in the most prestigious venues. It was the birth of the Gallizia Collection which has since been enriched with historic works that provide a comprehensive overview of Pressionism. Always ready for a charitable work (SOS Racisme, Paris Tout P tits, Institut Gustave Roussy, etc.) this commited philanthropist stages charity exhibitions and sales of commissioned pieces. Alain-Dominique Gallizia goal, through his numerous actions and his collection, constituted from historical collections and regularly upated with new creations, is to definitively inscribe Pressionism in the Art history. «The Tag Hive» Studios in Boulogne-Billancourt Toxic, Quik, Jayone, Seen in «The Tag Hive» Seen at work

Henry Chalfant Collection 1980 s Photographs Collection Photographs by Henry Chalfant, author with Martha Cooper of Subway Art, one of the best-selling books in the art world Copyright: Henry Chalfant «Alain-Dominique Gallizia has been inspired to put together a representative and authoritative collection of works-of-art produced by the finest artists to have emerged from the graffiti movement. He intends for it to be a historical document of the cultural movement that has arisen out of graffiti. Subsequently, Alain Dominique Gallizia has collected a large and comprehensive collection of rare historic canvases from many of the early graffiti artists for the Collection Vintage ( ). He will bring together these extraordinary collections under one roof at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco in an exhibition of unprecedented quality and size. The exhibit will signal the arrival of Pressionism, a celebration of this art movement in its mature phase. Pressionism-Pressure was the driving force of the movement from the beginning: pressure in the can, the pressures of street life, competition with other artists and the battle with the cops and city officials.» Henry Chalfant, New-York City, 2011 Copyright: Henry Chalfant
