Comparative Study IB Visual Art HL 12
Introduc)on This compara,ve study focuses on the works of three different landscape oil painters: Vanquished by Emily Car, The Saint-Lazare Sta3on by Claude Monet and Expulsion Moon and Firelight by Thomas Cole. These pieces of artwork u,lize different styles of pain,ng as well as different subjects for the pain, ngs. This study analyzes how the ar,sts convey their messages through the usage of expressive content. Studying these ar,sts and artwork has further influenced my own work in landscape oil pain,ng. A landscape pain,ng can be painted in various mediums such as oil paint and watercolor and art styles such as impressionism, abstrac,on and realism just to name a few. When compared to other types of art, landscape artwork is iden, fied by its main subject being scenery. Examples of these kinds of scenery include fields, mountains, ci,es, oceans and forests. hjp:// exposi,ons-exhibi,ons/emily_carr/ data/images/vag _lge.jpg hjp:// ar,sts/thomas_cole/moon.jpg hjps://ka-perseusimages.s3.amazonaws.com/ dbbb7009f6c7a84b1e2a4d5903fd48b ca5.jpg
Emily Carr Born in 1871, Emily Carr was a Canadian impressionist and expressionist ar,st who is most well known for her oil pain, ngs depic,ng Canada s landscape with Aboriginal quali,es. During her career, Carr s prime subjects for her artwork were trees. Carr greatly disagreed with deforesta,on and conveyed her emo,ons about it through many of her pain, ngs. hjps://
Geometric pajerns Formal Quali)es Vanquished 1930 Emily Carr Oil paint on canvas VigneJe effect Cool colours Focal point Subject of nature hjp:// Emily Carr u,lizes dark and cool colours in order to convey a moody atmosphere. The dark colours emphasize nega,ve emo,ons and a somber mood. The main subject of this pain,ng is of a landscape in Canada that appears to be deforested because of the appearance of fallen and cut logs. The dark mountains and storm clouds emphasize a feeling of sadness and gloom. Carr uses an impressionist style of pain,ng.
Interpreta)on of Func)on and Purpose Close-up of logs in the lower right corner of the pain,ng hjp:// emily_carr/data/images/vag _lge.jpg Emily Carr s Vanquished portrays how Westerners have caused deforesta,on to the natural environment the Aboriginal people lived in. The dead trees in the foreground and the almost barren background emphasizes how much Westerners have taken away from the environment. The dark and cool colours help convey the nega,ve emo,ons that come with deforesta,on and human pollu,on.
Evalua)on of Cultural Significance Emily Carr Emily Carr s work was heavily inspired by Aboriginal themes as she was fond of the culture. The portrayal of deforesta,on in Vanquished stems from Aboriginal points of views. To European colonists, the act of cu`ng down trees was a sign of progress. To the Aboriginal people of Canada, deforesta,on was seen as the destruc,on of their homes. Many of Carr s work had trees as their subjects since she believed that trees had a spiritual aspect to them. Being an advocate for Aboriginal lives, Carr created Vanquished in order to convey the devasta,on of deforesta,on from the perspec,ve of both herself and the Aboriginal people. hjps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/emilycarr.png
Claude Monet Born in 1840, Claude Monet was a French impressionist who was most well known for his landscape oil pain, ngs. During his youth, his mother influenced him to be more drawn to the arts. At a young age, Monet ajended drawing lessons and con, nued on this path well into adulthood. He had had many different instructors and oben focused the subject of his work on scenery because of his love for the outdoors. Claude Monet is considered to be a founder of the impressionist art movement. hjps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a4/ Claude_Monet_1899_Nadar_crop.jpg/220px- Claude_Monet_1899_Nadar_crop.jpg
Light colours Formal Quali)es The Saint-Lazare Sta3on 1877 Claude Monet Oil paint on canvas Complimentary colours Focal point Subject of industrializa,on hjps://ka-perseus-images.s3.amazonaws.com/dbbb7009f6c7a84b1e2a4d5903fd48b054585ca5.jpg Claude Monet u,lizes light and cool colours to convey a winter atmosphere. Monet incorporates different, nts of blue to express coldness and adds orange colours to compliment the blue. The main subject of this pain,ng is a train, which is shown to be pulling in to a sta,on. Monet uses an impressionist style of pain,ng. With this style, few details are considered and the brushstrokes are looser.
Interpreta)on of Func)on and Purpose During Claude Monet s career, trains became a popular subject of impressionist pain, ngs because of their new developments in France. The Saint- Lazare Sta3on captures the daily ac,vi,es present at train sta, ons. The people in the pain,ng are dwarfed by the sta,on and train, meaning that great emphasis was put on the industrial side of everyday life. Close-up of people in the lower right corner of the pain,ng hjps://ka-perseus-images.s3.amazonaws.com/ dbbb7009f6c7a84b1e2a4d5903fd48b054585ca5.jpg
Evalua)on of Cultural Significance Impressionism was very popular in France as that was its area of origin. Claude Monet focused on the industrial progress being made in France in The Saint-Lazare Sta3on. Trains were oben subjects of impressionist pain, ngs because of how popular they were becoming with the new developments in technology. Claude Monet was well acquainted with countless other famous impressionist ar,sts such as Camille Pissarro, Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas. Image of the modern day Saint-Lazare Sta,on hjp:// gare_st_lazare4527.jpg
Thomas Cole Born in 1801, Thomas Cole was an English and later American landscape painter who cofounded the Na,onal Academy of Design. He is an iconic figure of roman, cist pain,ng and has created many famous works such as The Voyage of Life, The Course of Empire and Expulsion Moon and Firelight. Thomas Cole gained a large amount of recogni,on in America and even has a peak of a mountain named aber him in his honor. hjps://cdn.quota,onof.com/images/thomas-cole-4.jpg
Warm colours Formal Quali)es Expulsion Moon and Firelight 1828 Thomas Cole Oil paint on canvas Stark contrast in light Focal point Subject of bridge hjp:// Thomas Cole u,lizes dark and warm colours to achieve a somber atmosphere. Shades are heavily used in this pain,ng. The harsh contrast of light and dark colours create a drama,c ligh,ng effect. The main subject is a bridge which stretches across the middle of the pain,ng. The background consists of a volcano, waterfall and clear sky. Cole heavily uses realism in this pain,ng.
Interpreta)on of Func)on and Purpose Leb side of bridge hjp:// ar,sts/thomas_cole/moon.jpg Thomas Cole s Expulsion Moon and Firelight conveys the story of how Adam and Eve were exiled from the Garden of Eden, but is also an allegory for the cons of industrializa,on. The drama,c ligh,ng and dark atmosphere in the pain,ng emphasizes the tragedy of both events. The vast emp, ness underneath the bridge symbolizes the descent Adam and Eve had undergone, similar to the descent mankind is undergoing with the consequences of industrializa,on. The right side of the bridge shows a bright light coming from a gateway with clear skies in the background, while the leb side of the bridge displays darkness and a volcano in the background. Right side of bridge hjp:// ar,sts/thomas_cole/moon.jpg
Evalua)on of Cultural Significance Thomas Cole s artwork began to have more biblical references aber he married his wife. Expulsion Moon and Firelight is heavily based around Chris, anity as the pain,ng focuses on the exile of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and evidently draws from it the idea of industrializa,on and its cons. Religious symbols are present as the combina,on of the bridge and waterfall create a cross that is posi, oned at the center of the pain,ng. As with many of his landscape pain, ngs, Cole incorporates snippets of the familiar landscape of America. Here, he uses it in the pain,ng as a basis for the Garden of Eden. The background se`ng is reflec,ve of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, a scene Thomas Cole has personally seen before. Close up of the cross created from the bridge and waterfall hjp:// moon.jpg Photo of the White Mountains in New Hampshire hjps://voyagena,on-biegalskillc.netdna-ssl.com/voyages/w/ White-Mountains-New-England-New-Hampshire.jpg
Comparisons and Connec)ons hjp:// exposi,ons-exhibi,ons/emily_carr/ data/images/vag _lge.jpg hjp:// ar,sts/thomas_cole/moon.jpg hjps://ka-perseusimages.s3.amazonaws.com/ dbbb7009f6c7a84b1e2a4d5903fd48 b054585ca5.jpg All three of the pain, ngs from the three different ar,sts share both similari,es and differences. The trio of artwork all have a heavy emphasis on mood and atmosphere. These pieces of art mainly achieve these through the usage of colour, light and darkness. While both Emily Carr and Claude Monet incorporate impressionist and expressionist techniques in their art, Thomas Cole uses realism. Both of the similari,es and differences in these three works of art are evident in their inner meanings and purpose. Emily Carr s work expresses the devasta,on of deforesta,on. Thomas Cole s work is more biblical as it conveys the story of Adam and Eve, but is also an allegory for the devasta,on of industrializa,on. Claude Monet s work is more reflec,ve of everyday life as it centers on the then modern train sta,on. These three ar,sts and their artworks express different a`tudes towards the centralized subject of industrializa,on and moderniza,on.
Making Connec)ons to Own Art Crumble (own artwork) Like Carr, Monet and Cole, I followed the path of focusing a piece of artwork around industrializa,on. I was not brought up religiously nor poli, cally, but the environment was always a topic that came up in school and with friends. I was taught early on to always turn off the lights and tap when I was not using them and to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to help the environment. My schooling has contributed to emphasizing how the Industrial Revolu,on had an almost equal amount of harmful results as beneficial results. With news about the environment and pollu,on and new solu, ons to fix these problems oben showing up on my social media, I oben wonder about the future. Because of these factors, I based my pain,ng around my belief of how industrializa,on and the con, nua,on of technology is leading to an unknown future for mankind. Like the three ar,sts I analyzed, I used oil paint in order to achieve the blending and effects I wanted.
Choice of Layout in Regards to Meaning Similarly to how Thomas Cole separated his pain,ng into two prominent sec,ons to show different atmospheres, I separated my pain,ng into three main sec,ons (past, present and future) to have a storytelling effect and emphasize the different atmospheres. Each sec,on is no,ceably different. The past is colourful and heavily nature oriented in order to emphasize the natural and good environment before industrializa,on. The present is mostly grey and filled with skyscrapers in order to emphasize the dense popula, ons and countless large ci,es of today that have replaced nature. The future is rather barren without very dis, nguishable features to emphasize how things are constantly changing and nothing is certain. I used realism for the majority of the pain,ng in order to show the past and present, but in the background in the upper right corner I transi, oned to impressionism in order to convey the idea of an uncertain future since the brushstrokes are choppy and not as realis,c. Past Present Future
Choice of Colour in Regards to Meaning Past Present and Future Emily Carr, Claude Monet and Thomas Cole all used colours to effec, vely emphasize their desired atmospheres: Carr and Cole u,lized dark colours in order to create moody and somber atmospheres, which complimented their messages of how deforesta,on and industrializa,on are harmful, and Monet had lighter colours in order to compliment his depic,on of an everyday scene. I wanted to effec, vely convey my message by using appropriate colours as well. In the past, I did not oben consider how the choices of colour and vibrancy can affect the overall atmosphere of the piece; I only chose colours that would look nice together. Although I s,ll heavily used complimentary colours, I paid more ajen,on to where I put the colours. I made the past sec,on of the pain,ng bright and colourful in order to emphasize the beauty of nature before moderniza,on replaced many of its natural scenery. I used mostly grey tones for the present and future in order to emphasize how nature has been pushed back in order to make way for the metal and concrete of today and the future.
Symbolism Thomas Cole inspired me to u,lize symbolism in my artwork. As his work has many prominent symbols that lead to an effec,ve extended meaning, I wanted to convey my message in a similar way. My past artwork was oben very literal, so I wanted to be more crea,ve in communica,ng my thoughts. Skyscrapers: the present day Blue sky and green mountains: the natural beauty of the environment before industrializa,on took place Roses: mankind s ini,al hope and aspira, ons when industrializa,on first took place, as well as the beauty they saw in it Obscured sun: the hope of how the problems of industrializa,on and technology can be fixed for a bejer future Rose petals: mankind s hope fading away as the cons of industrializa,on and technology become more prominent with,me Cracked road: the path leading into the future, which is not perfect Thorns: the dangers mankind discovered of industrializa,on and technology
