2 Course/Module description: We will discuss religious and secular works from the oeuvre of Sandro Botticelli. They will be studied in relation to the works done by his contemporaries (the Pollaiuolo brothers, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and the workshop of Andrea del Verocchio). We will try to understand the visual arts influenced by the humanistic atmosphere of the city of Florence during the time of the Medici familys unofficial rule. Course/Module aims: to grant knowledge about the fifteenth-century Florentine visual culture with emphasis on painting; to understand the artists major works in relation to the works by his contemporaries; to distinguish between various kinds of works within broad categories of religious and secular art and understand the relationship between techniques, styles, subjects, and patrons personalities; to write a research paper with distinction between facts and hypotheses and between ideas of critics and those of scholars. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: to know in depth major works of the leading Florentine artist; to understand the relation between subject and destination of a painting; to recognize kinds of paintings within broad category of religious art and see them as impacting secular art; to raise questions about works by way of combining observation and knowledge; to write a research paper and present ideas in lecture form on the level of conference presentationssr Attendance requirements(%): 90 Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: use of power point presentations which combine images and factual texts` combination of frontal lectures and discussions; dicussions of research subjects and oral presentations. PS. Oral presentation is compulsory for all the students. Course/Module Content: Introduction--survey of major works (2 meetings with the bibliography given during the second meeting) The topic of the sacra conversazione (2 meetings and the distribution of the verbal syllabus during the first meeting and reading the artists letters during the second meeting) page 2 / 6
3 Monastic orders and the survey of Fra Filippo Lippis paintings (3 meetings; reading of texts) Verrocchio as Botticellis master (1 meeting and the discussion of research subjects) The Pollaiuolo Brothers (1 meeting) Botticellis early paintings in relation to the works of his contemporaries (1 meeting) The art of portraiture including the problem of female portrait as an independent art work (2 meetings including the receipt of pages with research subjects during the first meeting) Self-portrait in Florentine art (1 meeting, including the discussion on pages with reserach subjects) Adoration of the Magi in Florentine art in chronological order (2 meetings) Annunciation from typological vewpoint (2 meetings including reading of the texts) Reception of classical heritage by the way of presentation of basic books on the subject (1 meeting) Distinction between reception of classical texts and reception of mythological subjects (1 meeting including the discussion of research subjects) Filaretes bronze doors as the presentation of mytholoical subjects in the context of religious and political subjects (1 meeting) Bandinis prints and domestic art (1 meeting) Primavera and reading of Albertis On Painting (2 meetings) Venus in relation to religious art (1 meeting and reading of Polizianos poem) Botticelli and Savonarola (2 meetings and reading of texts) Some of the topics may not be presented as 4 classes at least are given to students presentations which are compulsory; the last class is the survey of Botticellis works seen in the very first meeting.
