ART106 History of Art: Survey II Professor: Ivy C. Dally, M.A. Term: Spring 2012 Meets: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11:00-11:50 PM, MA-4340 Contact (best method): Contact Phone: ext Office: MA-4435F Office Hours: Wednesday 1:00 1:45 PM Required Text: Janson s Basic History of Western Art, Eighth Ed Catalogue Description: A chronological survey of Western art beginning with the Renaissance period and continuing through World War II. Added Description: This course will cover the arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, etc...) produced by the Western world (Europe and America) during the historical periods after the Middle Ages. This broad period spans the 14th to 20th centuries, and covers a number of artistic styles and movements to the present day. In addition to studying the technical and aesthetic achievements by the artists in this period, this class will pay particular attention to the social, political, and religious function of these arts, what they might have meant to their original audiences, and the specific cultural contexts that influenced their creation. Course Objectives: To develop a solid foundation of vocabulary and grammatical skills for writing and speaking about art. To demonstrate familiarity with artistic cultural patterns and stylistic traditions, and their continued use and relevance in the modern world. To understand the complex relationship that exists between the visual arts and the social and political context of a particular place and time period. To discuss and remain aware of the relationship between art history and other disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, theology, sociology, etc... To participate in formal and critical analyses of aesthetic objects and art forms. 1

To demonstrate an understanding of written art history and art criticism. To show visual recognition of the characteristics of art and architecture indicating the cultural unit from which the example and other associate works originate. To explore culturally rich institutions in the Chicago area which house examples of these art forms, including but not limited to, the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Course Requirements: Exams: There will be five exams in this course, each worth 50 points. The lowest of these five grades will be dropped for a total of 200 points. At the end of the semester, if you have taken the previous four exams and are happy with your grade for this portion of the class, you will not be required to take the fifth and final comprehensive exam. The exams will be composed of slide identification, short answer, multiple choice, and essay questions. Quizzes: There will be at least ten weekly quizzes in this course, each worth 10 points. Your best 10 will make up the total of 100 points. These quizzes are meant to gauge your progress in the course, and also to keep track of your attendance and generally how you are keeping up with class material. These quizzes will be administered at the beginning of class, and cannot be taken by those who are tardy or absent, i.e. there are no make ups! Research Project: A major component of this course is a research-based project, which includes the submission of an abstract, bibliography, and outline, along with an in-class presentation of up to ten minutes. The total value of this project will be 100 points. There will be two groups of research topics, students selecting topics from the first group will present their research at mid-term, whereas students selecting topics from the second group will present at the end of the semester. See Appendix D for more details. Museum Visit Assignment: Students are required to make arrangements on their own to visit any Chicagoland museum with artworks and/ or artifacts relating to the content of this course. Since this course covers art and culture from Prehistory to the Middle Ages, your museum visit essay must focus on discussion of objects from this time period. Does not require research beyond your museum visit. Papers should be approximately 4 pages in length and MUST be accompanied by proof of your visit, i.e. ticket stub or photo of yourself at the venue. This assignment is worth 100 points. Attendance and Participation: This course is heavily reliant on in-class material and interactions, and therefore attendance is crucial to your success. If you are not in class,

come late, or leave early, you will receive ZERO points for that day s assignments, which cannot be made up. 100 points are allotted for this portion of the class and are contingent on being actively involved in class discussion and assignments. Missing a class does not excuse you from any work that is assigned or due on that particular day, and excessive absences will adversely effect your grade. One thing I will not tolerate is tardiness, late entry to my class is disruptive to everyone and you will be made an example of. Please read the disclaimer below: The instructor reserves the right to refuse admittance to tardy students who are in excess of five (5) minutes late That means, if you are five (5) minutes or more late, you will not be allowed into the classroom without having previously notified the instructor of your intent to be tardy, and can document the situation which has caused you to be late. In fact, the door will probably be locked. Grade Scale: Exams 200 Quizzes 100 Research Project 100 Museum Visit Essay 100 Attendance/ Participation 100 Total 600 A B C D F Extra Credit Option: For a 30 point (5%) increase in your final grade, any student may attend one of the several gallery receptions throughout the semester on campus here at South Suburban College and write a two page account of their experience. Papers should include a discussion of the artist s work and what they had to say about it. Please feel free to interact with the artist and remark on your conversation. Pay attention to signs and postings for dates throughout the semester. 3

Make-Up Policy: NO make-ups for exams or any other in-class assignment will be allowed for any reason, unless a true emergency arises, and the student can present irrefutable proof of said emergency during the following class period, at which point it is still under the discretion of the instructor to decide whether the situation constitutes an emergency. If an in-class assignment or exam is missed, the student will receive ZERO points for said assignment. Late papers can be turned in during the following class period for a 10% reduction in grade. Late papers will NOT be accepted after the one-class grace period. Courtesy: Courtesy is a prerequisite of any college course. Thus, I will not tolerate late arrivals or early exits from my class, doing so will result in ZERO points for that day s assignments. I will also not tolerate cell phone rings, text messaging, repetitive noises, talking, sleeping, or any other general rudeness that could disrupt the learning processes of yourself and your fellow students. As your instructor, I reserve the right to dismiss you from an individual class, or the course as a whole if I feel your behavior is inappropriate or improper for a setting of higher education. Refer to SSC s Code of Conduct for further information on what will and will not be tolerated. Students with Disabilities: It is the disabled student s responsibility to contact the professor in a timely manner to arrange for appropriate accommodations or special arrangements. Clause: The instructor will NOT accept ed papers and assignments unless the student has previously made such arrangements. In other words, on the day an assignment is due, I want the assignment in my hands, not my inbox. If arrangements were made and an assignment is submitted via , then the instructor will reply to your as a confirmation that the assignment was received, for both of our records. Academic Honesty: Plagiarism of others' work is absolutely not allowed and will result in receiving a failing grade for the course. In this day and age, it is very easy to enter just a few words into a search engine and discover whether or not a student s work is original, in other words, all work must be your own and NO CHEATING! Confirmation of academic dishonesty will result in a zero points for that assignment. Further offenses will result dismissal from the course and discipline from the college.

Information Privacy: The instructor will not provide the student s personal information, grades or progress to any individual other than the student. 10 Appendix B: Guidelines for Submitted Work All assignments MUST be handed in on the due date as specified in class. Late papers will not be accepted for any reason without prior arrangements. All assignments MUST be typed in a standard 12 point font, double-spaced, and will result in a loss of points if not formatted properly. All assignments MUST have a cover page, with your name, date, and assignment title, and will result in a loss of points if not included. All assignments MUST be stapled in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Papers that are not stapled will not be accepted, and I do not carry a stapler. Paperclips and folders do not count as staples. All assignments MUST be the required length. My page counts are not there as a suggestion. I find it very hard to believe that you can complete the assignment adequately using less space. For example, if an assignment requires a minimum of 3 pages, I expect that third page to be at least 3/4 full. An assignment handed in below the minimum requirement will result in a 20% reduction of the final grade. All assignments MUST be proofread before handing them in. Points will be deducted for grammatical errors and absent-minded mistakes. All assignments MUST use citations and a bibliography if outside sources are being consulted. Meaning, if you are using information directly from the textbook or other sources, you must make proper note of it, otherwise it will be considered plagiarism and you will receive ZERO points for that assignment. All assignments will be graded for punctuality, format, content, clarity, and grammar, and are expected to contain college-level thinking and writing. PLEASE NOTE: Papers that contain more than 8 formatting and/or grammatical errors per page will be returned to the student without a grade. You will be required to take the paper to the writing center and turn it back in one week later with a letter grade deduction. Papers not handed back in will receive zero points.

Appendix C: How to Fail this Course 1. Don t come to class: By not coming to class, not only will you lose points allotted for the attendance portion of this course, but you will miss out on crucial information and interactions with your peers and the professor. Furthermore, you will also periodically miss quizzes, which are also an important part of your final grade. 2. Come late, leave early, sleep, and chit-chat during class: If dismissal from the course is what you seek, then being disruptive to the classroom environment is the way to go. Not only will you shed those pesky points by doing so, but you will probably even get to go home early after being berated and asked to leave by the professor (see #1). 3. Procrastinate doing your assignments: Or even better, don t do them at all! Nothing says I want to fail this course better than not turning in your assignments on time, or at all. It is really obvious when assignments are thrown together last minute with bad grammar and spelling, and makes it easy for the professor to issue bad grades. 4. Don t read your textbook: What are books good for anyway? Bunch of lazy words, never do nothing for nobody. Textbook readings really could help you understand the course material better, and receive a good grade and a deeper understanding of the information contained in this class, if you are interested in that type of thing. 5. Don t study for the exams: One of the best ways to fail with grace is to bomb all of the exams. By not carefully reading through your textbook and class notes beforehand, you can be assured that you will be unprepared for the exams and quizzes in this course. 6. Don t ask for help: If you are having trouble with the course, the best thing you can do to continue to have trouble is not to ask for help, from the professor or other students. Some people understand the topic, and others do not. Not everyone learns the same, and it should not be a source of self-consciousness. We are all here to learn together, and from one another. 7. Don t take notes: A really, really good way to fail is to sit in your chair and stare blankly at the professor and/or the presentation, doing your best to tune out what he or she is saying. By not writing anything down, you exponentially increase your ability to forget important information, and help succeed at #5. 8. Don t participate in class discussions: If just showing the professor you want to fail is not enough, you can demonstrate to your fellow students your lack of motivation to receive a good grade by remaining quiet during class discussion. The professor would so much rather interact with you than lecture, so this is a good way to get back at her for this sarcastic handout. 11

Appendix D-1: Research Project As discussed earlier, each student must complete a four-part research project during the course of the semester. Students will select a topic for research from the list below (Appendix D-2), and consult at least THREE text sources, meaning articles, journals, or books. Your textbook counts as your primary source. Supplemental resources may include internet sites ending in.edu ONLY. These sources must be properly recorded in a bibliography. Then students will conduct their research, and write a 250 word or less abstract of their research. Finally students will compose on outline to be submitted along with a 5-10 minute presentation on their research accompanied by some sort of visual aid, i.e. Powerpoint presentation. Abstract: A 250 word or less summary of your research topic and conclusions. Usually includes the research question, how you approached answering the question, the results of your research, and why it was important to research. The 250 word limit is to encourage clear, concise writing. Worth 10 points of overall grade. Bibliography: A one page list of books or other sources used in the research project. Must follow APA formatting. You may use an internet bibliography formatter such as Worth 10 points of overall grade. Outline: A general plan of your research and presentation. Broken down into its component parts such as introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. I encourage you to use a simple 5 part outline with an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion. See for suggestions. Worth 10 points of overall grade. Presentation: Your presentation is required to be 5-10 minutes in length, with a short question and answer session afterwards. You must have a visual aid, and can use any sort of notes you wish to give your talk. You may also write out the entire presentation and simply read it before the class, this works out to be about 3-5 typed pages. During the presentation, the audience should understand clearly your research question, methodology, and the results and importance of your research. I will be observing and you will be graded according to a rubric, which evaluates you on the content, clarity, format, and visual aids of your presentation. Worth 70 points of overall grade. Abstract and bibliography will be due approximately two-three weeks before your final presentation, whereas the outline will be due the day of your presentation.
