1 GE Money and Art FINAL Project Name: Lee Lok Kwan, Charlotte SID: Type: Essay writing Topic: The Positive Value of Art Forgery The Positive Value of Art Forgery In Contrast with the Conventional View on Counterfeiting Motivation After learning the lesson of counterfeiting, I discovered that art forgery may generate money. Once I saw on TV introducing a museum in Japan called Ostuka Museum of Art, it inspired me that even counterfeiting can contributes a lot in the art world. Therefore, I would like to write an essay in contrast with the conventional view on counterfeiting on the positive value of art forgery. (Art, 1998) Background In the past, conventional counterfeiting may lower the art value and also not worth money because people are tracing the authenticity of an art piece. There are also lots of artists and scholars who disagree with art forgery. For example, a book called The British Journal of Aesthetics (Dutton, Artistic Crimes: The British Journal of Aesthetics 19, 1979) has stated that art forgery has previously been critically valued not for its intrinsic aesthetic properties, but because it was believed to be the work of an esteemed artist. If we respect the artist, we should not steal his work. Besides, the book also stated that a forgery is an artifact of one person which is intentionally attributed to another, usually with the purpose of turning a profit. (Dutton, Artistic Crimes: The British Journal of Aesthetics 19, 1979) However, the most serious point to be accused is not only the misattribution of origin but also misrepresentation of achievement. If it is an art forgery, there exists always the possibility that the nature of the achievement involved in the performance may be

2 misrepresented or misunderstood. (Dutton, Artistic Crimes, 2012)All these above are evidence of people who disagree with art forgery. Another art critic called Martin Gayford, stated in his journal that all art history became instantly inapplicable at that point, even if it is still quite an attractive statuette; it loses an enormous amount of meaning. Discovering a work is a fake is like discovering a friend has been lying to you for years. (Gayford, 2010) His loyalty of the original art piece impressed him a lot. He also emphasize that the identity of the person who made what we look at is a matter that deeply affects how we feel about it. (Gayford, 2010) Contrasting View on Art Forgery In spite of the conventional views on art forgery is negative; counterfeiting has its own value nowadays. First of all, art forgery allows a collection of famous painting at one point, tourist need not to travel around the world to appreciate the masterpieces. In contrast, they can now see the complete art work with high integrity, with a much cheaper price. This is convenient for visitors and at the same time, a good method of promotion of art work in the view of artist. More and more people will then be exposed to the art work. Secondly, the relationship between people and the art piece can be shortened through art forgery. For instance, people can take photos with the art work but need not to worry about the flash light may damage the art piece because they are only art forgeries. Besides, people can also touch the art forgery directly. Direct contacts between people allow people to have one more sense to feel by their hands. The texture of an artwork is also part of a masterpiece which also reflects a proportion of the artist s mind. Therefore, art forgery contributes to viewers very much. The Scream 1983 Edvard Munch

For example, the ceramic reproductions can remain their color and shape over 2000 years, and this is a large contribution in the nature of preserving the history of cultural treasures. Art works which are easily damaged can then be reproduced to pass along generations. Art piece which worth millions can be reproduced for people to own one as an art forgery. For home decoration, famous art forgery paintings can definitely lifted the lifestyle of a house, which also represents the life quality of the host and owner. Conclusion In the future, a new business in the art world will grow. The commercial value of unlimited famous art piece will increase and art forgery will continue to rise and proliferate. Joe. L.
