1 Scholastic 144 November 3-17, 2018 Kauffman Gallery - Huber Art Center Shippensburg University 1871 Old Main Drive Shippensburg, PA Eligibility All High School juniors and seniors residing in the counties of Adams, Bedford, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Franklin, Fulton, Huntington, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Mifflin, Montgomery, Perry, Philadelphia, and York in Pennsylvania, and the Maryland counties of Fredrick and Washington are eligible. All student artists are either a High School junior or senior during the academic year. High School Art Teachers, by submission, agree to submit only junior and senior art work, and agree to the Terms and Conditions of Scholastic 144. Two and three dimensional work are eligible. Work requiring assembly, electronic equipment, or electric is not eligible. Submissions All art work is submitted by a High School Art Teacher. High School Art Teachers must register on Scholastic144ArtCall.org with their official school address. Submissions that do not have an official school teacher address will be disqualified. There is no entry fee. Each High School Art Teacher may submit up to five (5) entries. Submissions must be uploaded to scholastic144.artcall.org by Monday, October 1, Work must be original and available for the exhibition if selected (no substitutions). All work must have been completed between August 2017 and September Teachers may enter and change entries as many times as they wish up until the close of entries; Monday, October 1, Submission of entries begins April 1, 2018 and continues until October 1, Categories The following categories are eligible for this exhibition: Ceramic & Glass, Design, Digital Art, Drawing, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. A description of each category is found at the end of the Terms and Conditions page. Originality Original work is defined as inventive, creative, and highly distinctive. Do not submit copies, reproductions or duplications of previously printed materials, online images, art, or photographs. Size Limitations Two dimensional work (the picture plane) may not exceed 144 square inches. Presentation / outside dimensions if mounted, matted, and or framed, may not exceed 324 square inches. The color WHITE is strongly recommended for mounting and matting materials. Height x Width = Square Inches. All framed work must have a braided hanging wire. Unframed matted/mounted work will be installed using white display clips or double backed tape.

2 Three dimensional work may not exceed 12 (Height) x 12 (Width) x 12 (Depth); including the base or supporting plane. Art work that does not fit within the exhibit Size Limitations will be disqualified. Assembly All work must be ready for exhibition. Two dimensional work unframed will be attached to the gallery wall using white, front mounting clips or double backed tape attached to the back. Unframed two dimensional work should have a Matt and backing board or an appropriate mount. All framed work must have a braided hanging wire. Work requiring assembly, two or three dimensional, is not eligible. Work requiring assembly, two or three dimensional, is not eligible. Fragile work is submitted at the artist s risk. While all attempts will be make to handle each entry with extreme care, neither the Kauffman Gallery nor its staff will be responsible for damage to fragile art work. Entry Regulations Work must have been produced between August 2017 and September The judges will reject work that does not conform to the image submitted. Name, title, dimensions, and category will appear exactly as submitted. If work is not for sale, give a value - followed by NFS. Value on submission may not be changed. The Kauffman Gallery will not take a commission on sales for this exhibition. The Kauffman Gallery and Shippensburg University reserves the right to photograph works for publicity and future advertising purposes. Entry in the exhibition will constitute agreement to the terms and conditions described herein. Awards $1, in awards will be given by Shippensburg University; Best of Exhibit - $500.00, Second Place - $300.00, Third Place - $ Honorable Mentioned and participation certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of the exhibition. Judges & Awards Committee The Judges will select the exhibition by viewing entries online. The Awards Committee will select award winners from the actual work. 3 Accepted entries MUST have a Submission Receipt and Submission Label attached to the art work; teachers should save the Claim Ticket for pick up at the end of the exhibition. Accepted entries without a Submission Receipt and label attached to the art work will be disqualified. Accepted entries can be hand delivered or shipped. Hand delivered entries will be accepted on Saturday, October 20, 9 am to 4 pm at the Kauffman Gallery, Huber Art Center, on the campus of Shippensburg University. Shipped entries MUST be postmarked by Friday, October 19, 2018, and sent to: Scholastic Kauffman Gallery SU Art & Design Department 1871 Old Main Drive Shippensburg, PA All shipped work must be packaged in reusable containers. Please DO NOT use STYROFOAM PEANUTS OR LOOSE PACKING MATERIALS. Use foam, bubble wrap, and other appropriate materials when packing art work. Work should be adequately insured. All packages MUST have a street address; no post office box. The Kauffman Gallery will assume return shipping costs. Kauffman Gallery The Scholastic 144 Exhibition will be staged in the Kauffman Gallery at the Huber Art Center on the campus of Shippensburg University. Gallery visitors from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, West Virginia, and Virginia will see this exhibition. Shippensburg University is located in the Cumberland Valley in south-central Pennsylvania, near exits 24 and 29 of Interstate 81, approximately 30 minutes from the Maryland state line. The university was established in 1871 and boosts a rich tradition of quality education in liberal arts, sciences, education, and business. Exhibition Calendar: October 1, Online submissions end at 11:59 pm. October 10 - Judging results - notification sent October 19 - Shipped entries postmarked by October 20 - Hand delivered entries, 9 am to 4 pm November 3 - Exhibition Public Opening, and Art & Design Dept. 4 - Frequently Asked Questions - Q: Is only junior and senior art work eligible for Scholastic 144? A: Yes. Only H.S. junior and senior art work is eligible. The student must be a junior or senior during the academic year. Q: Can art students register independently and submit their own art work to Scholastic 144? A: No. Only H.S. art teachers, using their official school address, can register. Entries submitted and registered with a personal address (gmail, yahoo, etc.) or entries found to have a nonofficial art teacher s school address will be disqualified. Q: Can a H.S. art teacher register more than once and submit additional entries? A: No. Each H.S. art teacher may register only once and submit only five (5) pieces of art work. Multiple registrations and submissions by an art teacher s name and art teacher s official school address will disqualify all entries submitted following the first registration and first five entries in the art teacher s name. Q: When can a H.S. art teacher register and submit his or her entries? A: A H.S. art teacher can register and submit his or her entries between April 1 - October 1, The Scholastic 144 Art Call.org website is now open. Q: Once an entry is submitted can the entry be removed and another art work be submitted in its place? A: Yes. Individual entries, any or all five, can be changed at any time, and as many times as the art teacher wishes, right up until the entry deadline; Monday, October 1, Q: What is the maximum size the.jpg file can be when I upload the image? A: The maximum height and width a.jpg photo can be is 2800 pixels. Q: Can I submit fragile work? A: Yes, but it is not encouraged. Shippensburg University and the Kauffman Gallery assumes no responsibility for art work damaged or broken during shipping, unpacking, handling, installation, repacking, or during return shipping. Fragile work is submitted at the artist s risk. All efforts will be made to handle each and every art work with extreme care. Q: Do I need to put braided picture wire on the back of each 2D art work? A: NO. Only framed two dimensional work needs a braided hanging wire on the back. Do not use string, yarn, fishing line filament, or solid wire. String, yarn, and fishing line filament stretches and sags once the art work is hung. Solid wire is stiff an does not flex to a center when hung on a wall hanger. Attach a braided hanging wire to the art work at a height of 75% up from the bottom of the bottom of the 2D art work. Please be sure the center of the braided hanging wire is one to two inches below the bottom-top of the frame. Pick up the art work by the braided hanging wire and gently bounce the art work by the wire to test if the wire is secure. Framed art work that is hand delivered or shipped without a braided hanging wire will be disqualified.

5 Two dimensional work, mounted or matted and not framed, does not need a hanging wire and will be installed using white, front mounting display clips or with double backed tape. Display clips clip to the mount or Matt and have double backed tape attached to secure the work to the gallery wall. Q: Must my art work be presented in a frame and under glass or Plexiglas? A: No. However, framed work under glass or Plexiglas may improve the appearance of the art work. Framed art work that is hand delivered or shipped without a braided hanging wire will be disqualified. Q.: What color matt or mount should I use for my 2D accepted entry? A: A white matt/mount is strongly encouraged and suggested, but not required, for all 2D entries. Q: How do I ship my accepted entry? A: Shipped accepted entries can be mailed using UPS, USPS, or FedEx. Note, all shipped entries must be mailed in reusable containers. All shipped entries MUST have a return street address; no P.O. Box address. Please include a return shipping label within each container shipped. PLEASE, DO NOT use loose packing materials: styrofoam peanuts, styrofoam beads, etc. Q: Can anyone attend the Opening Reception and the Shippensburg University Art & Design Department Open House on Saturday, November 3, 2018? A: Yes. The Scholastic 144 Opening Reception is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The SU Department of Art & Design will be having an Open House at the same time as the Opening Reception. You may tour all art & design studios, talk with university Art & Design students, see completed and art work in progress in the studios, and talk with the SU Art & Design faculty. Q: When will I know who are the Award winners? A: Award winners are recognized at an invitation only Awards Reception/Luncheon. Award winners will be posted online following the Opening Reception for the exhibit; see the SU Art & Design Department Scholastic 144 webpage - scholastic_144/ for award winners and exhibition statistics. Scholastic Categories: Ceramic and Glass (C/G): Functional objects made of ceramic and glass. Examples include but art not limited to: vases, teapots, bowls, plates, cups, tiles, tableware or vessels. Ceramic pieces may include earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, etc. Glass pieces may include stained glass, cast glass, fused glass, blown glass, etc. Special Instructions: Submit non-functional ceramic or glass works, such as busts, figures or abstract forms to the Sculpture category. Submit ceramic or glass works intended to be worn for personal adornment to the Jewelry category. Design (DSN): Design: Art created for commercial or applied purposes. Design includes work that has a defined function such as advertising, communications or product design. Examples include but are not limited

6 to: magazine layouts, book covers, greeting cards, fonts, letterhead, business cards, calendars, signage, as well as proposals for products such as electronic devices, cars, bicycles, skateboards, furniture, toys, etc. Special Instructions: Work designed using 3D modeling software, and/or executed as a 3D-printed object, should be submitted to the Sculpture category. Digital Art (DA): Digital Art: Computer-generated artwork OR artwork captured digitally and heavily collaged or manipulated to produce a new image. The production of digital art relies heavily upon computer software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIMP, Macromedia Freehand, CorelDraw, or other graphics editing programs. Examples included but are not limited to: Digital collages, photo manipulation, digital painting, and fractal art. Special Instructions: Identify computer software used in the List Materials section of the online submission form. Digital artwork may contain text, but submissions that contains text for commercial purposes should be entered in the Design category. Digital photographs that are touched up or lightly manipulated using computer software should be entered in the Photography category. If you are using collaged images, please refer to the copyright and plagiarism guide. Drawing (DRW): Drawing: Art drawn on a two-dimensional surface. Examples include but are not limited to: Pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, crayon, scratchboard, marker, etc. Special Instructions: Drawings copied from published photographs, the internet or existing works should not be submitted and will be disqualified. Please refer to the copyright and plagiarism guide for more detailed information. Jewelry (J): Jewelry: Art objects worn for personal adornment. Examples include but are not limited to: Bracelets, rings, brooches, earrings, cufflinks, necklaces, etc. Special Instructions: Materials may include metal, semi-precious stones, plastic, beading, glass, found objects, etc. Mixed Media (MM): Mixed Media: Art made from more than one medium, usually with a three-dimensional element. Examples include but are not limited to: Collage, assemblage, cut paper, handmade paper, batik, fiberbased art, fine art books, etc. Special Instructions: Combinations of painting and drawing applied only to one surface should be submitted to either the Painting or Drawing categories. Mixed media assemblages meant to be viewed in the round should be submitted in the Sculpture category. Painting (PTG): Painting: Art created by applying pigment to a two-dimensional surface. Examples include but are not limited to: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, tempera, ink, encaustic, fresco, spray paint, etc. applied on canvas, canvas board, paper or any flat surface. Special Instructions: Paintings copied from published photographs, the internet, or existing works should not be submitted and will be disqualified. 7 Photography: Images captured by either an analog or digital camera. Examples include but are not limited to: Black and white photographs, color photographs, digital or analog photographs, photograms, other experimental photography, etc. Special Instructions: Identify type of photographic techniques used in the List Materials section of online registration. Editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro, Photo Explosion, etc.) is acceptable to use for minor touch-ups and image correction in a manner that replicates traditional darkroom techniques (cropping, dodging, burning, adjusting brightness, contrast, color balance, etc). Works that are digitally collaged, cloned, layered, merged, distorted, or heavily manipulated with computer software must be submitted in the Digital Art category. Printmaking (PM): Printmaking: Art made by printing on a flat surface. Examples include but are not limited to: Monotype, collograph, woodcut/linocut, intaglio, lithography, etching, silkscreen printing, etc. Special Instructions: Identify the printmaking technique used in the List Materials section of online registration. Sculpture (S): Sculpture: Three-dimensional art objects created by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques. Examples include but are not limited to: Modeled, carved, cast, constructed, or assembled objects. Materials may include but are not limited to: clay, cardboard, metal, acrylic, wood, glass, stone, marble, textiles, plastics, and found objects.
