1 1 Twining Tutorial 1 Diagonal Lines Explore a manner to create diagonal lines on a background of interlinking stitches. Set up a warp of 9 loops (18 threads). Insert a contrasting color thread, as the 4th loop from the right. In all, set up a warp of 10 loops, 20 threads. The first cross

2 2 Work an initial row. Threads twist in pairs. Initial Row Work a braiding row: Right-edge stitch, 8 plain stitches, and a left-edge stitch Braiding Row Notice that the purple threads have white partners on this braiding row. Work a follow-up row, 10 plain stitches. Notice that the purple threads are partners on this row. Follow-Up Row After several repeats of braiding row, follow-up row, notice the pattern resembling a broken line. Broken Line Pattern

3 3 Move the Line to the Left Pattern Row 1 The pattern begins on a braiding row. Work a right-edge stitch, then a plain stitch. You now have a lone white thread. Normally this white thread should have a purple partner. Lone white thread Reach between the two purple threads and grab the next white back thread as a partner. Work this white stitch. This stitch is called fetch a friend. Fetch a white partner. Now work a stitch using two purple threads. This is called a twine-left stitch. Purple stitch Work 4 plain stitches and then a left-edge stitch to finish the row. View at the end of the 1st Row

4 4 Pattern Row 2 Work 3 white plain stitches. You now, once again, have a lone white thread. Again, reach between the two purple threads, fetch a friend. A white thread travels right to become the partner in the white stitch. Lone white thread Reach to fetch the partner thread Then the purple threads twine left. Purple threads with purple partners. Work 4 plain stitches to complete the row. Repeat rows 1 and 2 three times, that is eight rows in all. Note the way the purple line moves to the left. Row 2 complete Row 8 complete

5 5 Move the Line to the Right The secret is to work the purple stitch first. Change the direction on either a braiding row Or a follow-up row, it doesn t matter. Row 9 Work a right-edge stitch, then 5 white plain stitches. This brings you to the lone white thread before the purple threads. Lone white thread Work the purple stitch first, surrounding the white thread. This is a twine-right stitch. The traveling white thread participates in a stitch to the left of the purple stitch. This is a traveller stitch. Work the white traveler stitch Purple stitch around the white thread The traveler thread is really a front thread. Make sure you have positioned it in the front before working a plain stitch. Notice that the line is thinner when travelling to the left. The line is travelling in the same direction as the lean of the stitches. The line seems thicker when travelling to the right. Here the line is crossing over stitches Travelling in a direction contrary to the stitches. View after several more rows.
