2 Helpful instructions on how to attach hair to the knitted dolls in this book. These instructions are taken from 'Knitted Dolls with a Designer Wardrobe' by Arne & Carlos / isbn: HAIR Use special colors for the hair so each of the dolls will have its own personality. If you are going to machine wash the doll, it is important that you knot the hair in well so that it doesn t felt unless you want a doll with Rasta hair, like Ulla. If you want that effect, use a pure wool yarn so that the hair will felt and clump after a few cycles in the washer. Ulla s hair is made with wool embroidery yarn that we had lying around. Arne and Milton s curly hair came from yarn that we unraveled from an old sweater. KNITTED DOLLS PAGE 43

3 We begin by marking the hairline around the head. Cut the yarn to desired length. We usually wrap the yarn around an A4 notebook (11 ½ x 8 ¼ in) for the right length hair. Fold the yarn lengths at the center and use a crochet hook to draw the yarn through a stitch. Pull the ends through the yarn loop and tighten. We used one or two strands in each hair length for thinner or thicker hair. ARNE & CARLOS PAGE 44

4 When you ve added hair all around the head along the marked hairline, you might also decide to section off the area between the decreases at the front and add more lengths of hair in that section. Take all the hair, pull it up and make a ponytail attached to the highest point. If you want, you can add in short yarn lengths for bangs. Alternately, you can continue to attach hair at various points around the whole head. This means a lot of hair but you ll have more options for making fun hairstyles and cutting hair to different lengths than if you only make the version with the ponytail. SIV ONLY HAS HAIR around the hairline. We pulled the hair up into a ponytail. The doll with green hair has thicker hair because we attached lengths of yarn at various points around the head. 5 Flower Shoes Just like slipping your feet into a flower. MATERIALS Yarn: Small amounts of yarn appropriate for recommended needles. Needles: Set of 5 dpn U.S. size 4 / 3.5 mm Crochet Hook: U.S. size E-4 / 3.5 mm INSTRUCTIONS Begin with the toe. CO 8 sts onto one needle and then divide sts onto 4 dpn with 2 sts on each needle. Join, being careful not to twist cast-on row. Rnd 1: K8. Rnd 2: (K1, inc 1, k1) around. Rnd 3: K12. Rnd 4: (K1, inc 1, k1, inc 1, k1) around. Rnd 5: K20. Rnd 6: (K1, inc 1, k3, inc 1, k1) around 28 sts. Sew the toe closed and weave in ends on WS. Knit 12 rnds (28 sts each rnd). Row 7: K5, k2tog. Row 8: P5, p2tog. Knit 2 rnds over all the sts, dividing sts over 4 dpn with 5 sts on each needle. Finish with 10 rnds k2, p2 ribbing and then BO in ribbing Crocheted Flower Frills Work crochet from the inside of the ribbing using crochet hook U.S. size E-4 / 3.5 mm. Rnd 1: Begin by inserting the hook between 2 knit sts and work 1 sc. Work (ch 4, 1 sc between 2 purl sts, ch 4, 1 sc between 2 knit sts) around; end with 1 sl st into 1st sc. Rnd 2: Work (1 sc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) in each ch loop around. End with 1 sl st into 1st sc. Cut yarn and weave in ends neatly on WS.
