1 About this pattern: I ve seen all those beautiful cabled bags out there and always thought about a strong, matching and self-made handle. Then one day inspiration struck and I can show you now how to make a kind of I-cord that is cabled ;-) 1/5 front back side This document contains instruction for a with photos illustrating the instruction. 2 6-stitch cables in front 6-stitch cables in back about this pattern: I-cord: it consists of 22 stitches which form two cables of 6 stitches, framed by 2 purl stitches and a knit stitch on each side of the cord to make it easier to fold it you re working in rows, only the cabling on the wrong side is worked like an I-cord cables: - in this instruction I m cabling 6 stitches; -in this instruction I m cabling every 8th row; -I m always cabling first the right side (the normal cable) and then in the backrow the wrong side (the special cable connecting both sides) feel free to use a different cabling - it would be interesting to see how it looks knitted stitches at side 2/5 abbreviations: K - knit P - purl Cab - cable 2 purl stitches framing the cables knit the stitches as they appear - knit all stitches, that were purled in the previous row and vice versa cable: slip 3 stitches on an auxiliary needle, lay them in front of your work, knit the next 3 stitches and then knit the 3 stitches of the auxiliary needle you need: - yarn - 3 double pointed needles one serves as auxiliary needle start: cast on 22 stitches row 1: P3, K2, P1, K2, P6, K2, P1, K2, P3 (backrow) row 2: knit the stitches as they appear repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have reached row 6

3 cabling 3/5 you re in a row, where you want to cable (see the thread at the right top corner) cable the frontside: K3, P2, K1, P2, Cab, P2, K1, P2, K3 you ve just cabled the right side cable; the thread is on the left side now turn your work, take your auxiliary needle and purl the first 3 stitches, then knit the next 16 stitches on your normal needle as they appear; on the left needle lay still the last 3 stitches the 3 stitches from the left needle must be slipped now on the main (horizontal) needle as shown by the arrow: first slip on stitch 1, then stitch 2, finally stitch 3; the right (auxiliary) needle should be laid behind the main needle to be kept out of the way

4 cabling cont. 4/ this is how it looks after you have slipped the stitches on the main needle your thread is on the left side of the main (left) needle knit now the stitches on the right needle with the left side of the left needle: first stitch 1, then stitch 2 and 3 note: if it s too tight, knit them with the auxiliary needle and slip them on the main needle afterwards all stitches: you have cabled the backside of your I-cord your thread is on the left side the following row (all stitches as they appear): everything is quite cramped together

5 cabling cont. 5/5 all 6 rows to the next cabling row: not cramped together at all - just until the next cabling ;-) this is the begin of your, after you have cast it off, the end looks similar you can see also on this photo, that your is hollow the special cables on the wrong side can be opened wide, but normally you don t see this it can come in handy if you want to stuff the cord later with something
