2 Purpose of Today s Information The main focus today will be to familiarize you with URI Rev 3 This is by no means a full training session or a tutorial for URI Rev 3 In the interest of time, some of the slides will be gone over quickly. 3 URI Developed by Exelon and Entergy Based on the RASCAL model Is a shell in/shell out process Exelon and Entergy developed a modern windows based user interface

4 URI Rev 1 The current version used by Exelon (URI Rev 1) is limited to constant effluent and meteorological conditions The program is very user friendly and this attribute has been recognized by many utilities across the nation IEMA has also adopted the use of URI as a backup to their MESOREM Dose Assessment Program

5 URI Rev 2 After Fukushima, the NRC made recommendations for licensees to upgrade their dose assessment As a result URI Rev 2 was developed to address the recommendations made in the NRC Near Term Task Force Report

6 URI Rev 2 (continued) Is capable of performing simultaneous releases Dose assessment calculations are expanded from 10 miles to 50 miles Graphics have also been enhanced A number of utilities currently plan to implement URI Rev 2 this year

7 IEMA S DOSE ASSESSMENT MESOREM: a DOS based program running in a VMS environment (currently used by IEMA) The program has plume and puff models and extensive graphics capabilities Retain capabilities of MESOREM IEMA wanted a modern user interface that incorporated the model enhancements found in RASCAL 4.2

8 PHASE ONE The decision was made to focus on an integrated capability for URI Other enhancements will be made in later phases These enhancements include expanded graphics and scenario data generation

9 KEY ISSUES Focus on changing meteorological and radiological conditions It was recognized that RASCAL already is capable of accepting multiple radiological and meteorological conditions The problem was how to pass multiple inputs to RASCAL as opposed to single inputs

10 KEY ISSUES (continued) Next issue to address was how to design the input screen One of the key features of URI is its ability to display input and output on the same screen The challenge became how to add inputs without complicating user interface

11 EMERGENT ISSUES Reactor Accident in Japan affected everyone Utilities, States, NRC, FEMA etc. The original contract for URI software development was too large to be completed in the past fiscal year Net result: contract was revised in scope to be completed this fiscal year

12 CURRENT URI Rev 3 STATUS Rev 3 of URI is finished and testing is ongoing Plans are to finish enhancements including graphics and scenario development (Rev 3.1) IEMA intends to implement in mid to late 2014 (Upon completion of Rev 3.1)

13 DEMONSTRATION At this point, the presentation will focus on a demonstration of Rev 3 of URI. One BWR, Clinton, will be used for demonstration purposes As might be expected there are differences in each station due to the unique monitors and pathways

14 SCENARIO USED A major core accident has occurred at the Clinton Power Station. A filtered release occurred for two hours from 1430 to 1630 At 1630 the filters fail and the release continues to 1730 At 1730 a penetration seal fails in containment and an unmonitored release occurs until 1830

42 THE FUTURE Add a separate module for scenario development Explore additional ways to integrate output to other programs such as WebEOC

43 SUMMARY Now that the integrator has been completed, other features are being added Like RASCAL and current URI, the Integrated URI is considered shareware URI User s Group is active URI Currently used at 45 NPP sites
