Universal Access and ATM Design Using the Virtual Build Methodology Kang Li, Calvin K.L. Or, Vincent G. Duffy, Zach Rowland Mississippi State University Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Department of Industrial Engineering March 9, 2004
Background & Challenges ATMs are normally designed based on several technical and safety standards and guidelines that ensure access for diverse users. Human is not a combination of individual characteristics. Design engineers should consider how the characteristics are combined as a whole and this whole, when interacting with technology is dependent of the environment, context and situation (Hypponen et al.,1999). Conventional anthropometry are not adequate for improving the knowledge of the anthropometrics of disability (Steinfeld et al., 2002).
Background & Challenges The databases of the available software (for non-disability) are not adequate for disabled population since the behaviors of this special population may be different from those of non-disabled. Digitally based data collection tools can be used to obtain accurate and reliable measurement in three dimensions (Steinfeld et al., 2002). Reaching distance is not the only issue when designing ATM for disabled (CAE, 2002). Stress and fatigue during reaching should also be considered in order to provide comfort for the users.
Research Merits Using motion capture system with Digital Human Modeling (DHM) software benefits design engineers to examine disabilities-machine interaction. No existing anthropometric database is available to apply to the design for disabilities. Although using traditional data may be feasible for designing the products dimensions, interacting behaviors cannot be examined without using virtual build method. Subjective rating of comfort level and objective measures of low back muscle tension using EMG (Chaffin et al., 2002) can be included.
Simultaneously Visualize & Analyze Human-Machine Interface Integrating Motion Capture with Design Full-scale (physical) modeling provides more designspecific information than conventional anthropometry and can provide information so interaction of person and environment is easy to visualize (Steinfeld et al., 2002). Combined DHM and CAD tools can help integrate data from the anthropometric studies easily into design tasks (Steinfeld et al., 2002). Designers need direct visualization of how anthropometry affects performance (Steinfeld et al., 2002).
Digital Human Modeling & Ergonomics analysis Integration of Motion Capture with Computer- Based Ergonomics Analysis & Physical Mockups, NIOSH (Jaszkowiak, et al. 2002). Integration of Motion Capture with Computer- Based Ergonomics Analysis & Virtual Design, Ford Motor Co. (Brazier, et al. 2003).
