We are located in Concord, a town close to the San Francisco Bay, the surrounding area of which is commonly known as the Bay Area. This region has one of the highest concentration of Malaysians in the United States. Major cities include San Francisco, Sunnyvale and San Jose and this region hosts some of the leading private and public universitities and colleges in the country. For professional networking, the Malaysians in the area are very active in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors. It is in this dynamic environment that MINDS-CC hopes to work with others to promote our goals. MINDS-CC is still in its infancy. We are working to recruit others to join in our team. We are using social media extensively to promote our goals to make our presence known. Our focus has been getting the MINDS name out there in the social media world and during other professional, business and scientific events. For example in May 2014, Yitmin represented Tan Sri Augustine Ong and MINDS-CC at the Oxygen Club of California Annual Conference to accept the Pioneer in Tocotrienol Research Award on behalf of Tan Sri Augustine Ong. Goals 1) Promote cooperation and mutual assistance amongst California inventors, designers, investors and like-minded people in Malaysia and Asia 2) Promote the activities of MINDS by hosting seminar, events and associated professional functions in California. 3) Promote the commercialisation (in California and the United States) of inventions and designs produced by Malaysian and Asian inventors and designers. 4) Represent MINDS through participation in invention and design-related activities in California. 3 VISIT TO UMS KK February 2015 The visit to Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu was indeed very fruitful, it was also a good time to reconnect with our members from our MINDS KK Chapter. The President of MINDS also got the opportunity to meet the gentle and courteous Vice Chancellor, YBhg Pro Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, who, despite his heavy schedule still made time to say hello to Tan Sri Ong. The one-day session was well attended with about 90 participants of whom 90% were academic staff and the rest were postgraduates of the university. Prof Dr Felix Tongkol, Director of Research and Innovation Centre started the session with a word of welcome to MINDS representatives and also Dr Edwin Chung, Assoc Prof, School of Engineering, Taylor s University. Prof Dr Felix informed that UMS KK is an innovative campus as there had been a steady growth of inventions during the past 20 years. Tan Sri Ong was next to take to the rostrum and he mentioned that it was indeed the meeting of MINDS as we were able to meet up with our members from the Land beneath the Wind. Tan Sri Ong also said that it is MINDS intention to share any innovation and invention programme with UMS when the opportunity arises. He also explained the role of MINDS and also its objectives, mission and vision. VC of UMS KK, YBhg Prof Dr Harun saying hello to Tan Sri Ong Dr Edwin Chung s two-hour talk was power-packed and he also got the audience all participative and excited with some of his exercises. He mentioned that most of us stopped thinking too early and that our ideas are like seeds, if we nurture them early they will come into full bloom. According to him design and creativity is that clever bit of inventing. He asked the attentive crowd what is the source of our creativity and inventiveness and the answer he gave was our desire. It is our desire for something so great that it spurs us to be creative and inventive. Not all of us are born naturally creative. However he believes that those who are not can be trained to be creative. It was generally a very interactive and engaging session with much questions and answers and the audience were asking for more of such talks in the future. (r-l) Dr Edwin Chung, Prof Felix, Tan Sri Ong The workshop is very helpful, delivery was very interesting and the section on brainstorming was good and some points mentioned were new and eye-opening. Assoc Prof Dr Patricia Matanjun Dr Babak Rasti and Ms Jennifer Roland I find the talk new and different, very novel indeed. The presentation is very good. Dr Babak Rasti Very interesting and mind opening especially for the postgraduate students. The part on thinking process is something new and the presentation was very good. 11 In this issue of our newsletter, we would like to highlight two inventions by our members. MULTIFUNCTIONAL PADDY FIELD WORKING MACHINE Inventor : Mr Teh Bah Chuan Paddy fields are typically found in Peninsular Malaysia, in most of its regions. The most scenic paddy fields are located in northern Malaysia, in Kedah, Perlis and Penang; almost covering these states. As we enjoy our daily bowl of hot, steaming fragrant rice, have we given any thought to the back breaking job of producing this bowl of rice? The process is labour intensive and time consuming however with the introduction of the Multifunctional Paddy Field Working Machine the life of a paddy farmer is made easier. Mr Teh Bah Chuan being awarded the National Intelletual Property Award (Patent Category) In 2013 The person behind this technological transformation in rice farming is Mr Teh Bah Chuan who has 30 years of experience as a mechanic in the paddy industry. He was a rice farmer who took it upon himself to change the fate of rice farmers. If anyone of you out there is interested in the MPFWM you can contact us at the MINDS Secretariat. The Multifunctional Paddy Field Working Machine (MPFWM) is a multi-purpose machine made for the rice farming sector. This machine can perform 5 functions in the preparation of the field for paddy planting. The MPFWM plows, sprays herbicides on the bunds, presses the stumps and weeds of paddy, pulls the board to level the ground and releases pesticides. This product is the only product in rice farming which is able to perform all the 5 tasks at once as compared to existing machinery which can only perform the task one at a time taking up to 6 working days. Today rice planting is made easier with the introduction of the multifunctional Paddy Field Working Machine. The Multifunctional Paddy Field Working Machine 11
12 SIFIR A Inventors: Hardy A Chin & Nani Mansor Albert Einstein once said: In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. Thus, when the youngest child of Hardy and Nani was struggling with basic multiplication in Primary 3, they struck upon an idea to teach multiplication in a more enjoyable and fun way, much like playing a game. Combing Hardy s craftiness and Nani s experience and knowledge in tutoring, they eventually came up with a game which is actually a teaching aid designed to engage children to learn math and memorise the multiplication tables in a fun and creative way. Nani felt that the product should carry a Malaysian identity, thus the name SIFIR A - An A-grade in Sifir (Malay for multiplication) was picked. The rainbow coloured baubles appeal to both teachers and students Hardy A Chin and Nani Mansor The couple has exhibited SIFIR A in many exhibitions and fairs, and their booth was always buzzing with activities and cheer. The biggest breakthrough was when the Brunei educational department, finding the product educational in a creative way, decided to use it in its education system! Hopefully SIFIR A will eventually find its way into the Malaysian education system one day. Success is predictable yet the road to success is paved with failures. only with tenacious belief and determination can one achieve. Looking back, Hardy and Nani believe that only by putting their bodies, souls and minds together, and stretching their abilities and creativity to overcome the difficulties and challenges along the way, were they able to finally bring SIFIR A to where it is today. For those of you who are interested in the product, you can contact us at MINDS Secretariat. Hardy Adrian Chin and Nani Mansor Inventors of SIFIR A 12
