4 GALLERY... About the authors Donald Kennedy Donald Kennedy, the President of Stanford University, brings a unique set of experiences to food safety questions. He holds three degrees from Harvard University in Biology. In 1960 he joined Stanford University where he later became chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences and then the Program of Human Biology. From 1976 to 1977, he was Senior Consultant to the then-new Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President. From 1977 to 1979, he was Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. In 1980, Dr. Kennedy became Stanford's eighth President. Don A. Dillman Don A. Dillman is Professor of Sociology and Rural Sociology and Director of the Social and Economic Sciences Research Center (SESRC) at Washington State University. The SESRC maintains a mail, telephone, and face-to-face survey capability which it uses to conduct more than 40 survey research projects per year. A graduate of Iowa State University, Dillman is author of nearly 100 publications, including a well-known survey text, Mail and Telephone Surveys: The Total Design Method. Dr. Dillman maintains an active research program on the improvement of survey methodologies and the impacts of information technologies on rural people and places. Olan D. Forker Olan D. Forker is Professor of Agricultural Economics at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. He has been involved in commodity promotion research since 1972 and has published extensively on the economics of milk promotion and has served as a consultant to several commodity promotion organizations. Forker is chairman of a national research committee on agricultural commodity promotion programs. He is former Chairman of the Cornell Department of Agricultural Economics and is currently co-authoring a book on the Economics of Commodity Promotion Programs. Donald J. Liu Donald J. Liu, a native of Taiwan, is a Research Associate in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Cornell University. He received his Ph. D. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1985 and has since been working in the area of generic dairy promotion. Dr. Liu will join the faculty of economics at Iowa State University and will be conducting research in meat export marketing. 2 CHOICES Third Quarter 1989

5 Robert D. Reinsel Robert D. Reinsel is Senior Economist with the Agriculture and Trade Analysis Division, Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. His published research includes reports on agricultural policy, land values, agricultural finance, and manufactured inputs. Currently, Reinsel serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Agribusiness: An International Journal. His work has received international recognition with papers reprinted in Japanese, Chinese, French, and Spanish. He served as Secretary to the National Agricultural Credit Committee and during the 1970s he was the U.S. Delegate to the FAO Fertilizer Commission. Leo V. Mayer Leo V. Mayer is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economics in USDA. A native of Kansas, he holds degrees in agricultural economics from Kansas State University and Iowa State University. Mayer was on Iowa State University's faculty for five years before moving to Washington, DC where he has worked in several senior positions including Senior Staff Economist with the Council of Economic Advisors, Senior Specialist for Agriculture with the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress, and Associate Administrator of USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. Harold F. Breimyer Harold F. Breimyer's professional career spans over 50 years. It started in the USDA with the AAA. During the ensuing 30 years he held positions in the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and the Agricultural Marketing Service of USDA and the Council of Economic Advisers in the Office of the President. Since leaving USDA he has been associated with the University of Missouri-Columbia for 21 years. Throughout his career, Breimyer has dealt with commodity and marketing policy and has been a vigorous writer and commentator about food and farm issues.
