2 2-3 Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to Alliance Manchester Business School and our third annual leadership programme for the 3 rd Sector, Prometheus. The University of Manchester and Alliance Manchester Business School place significant emphasis on social responsibility. Along with world-class research and an outstanding learning and student experience, social responsibility is one of the three key goals in the University s strategic vision. As part of this commitment, Prometheus has been specifically designed for those of you working in third sector organisations. It was one of the first programmes I attended when I joined the school in 2013 and I am proud that its success has continued year-on-year. We have a full agenda and over the forthcoming two days we look Prometheus: The vision forward to exploring the issues that you face, sharing insights into the latest business and management thinking, and helping you to apply these to your work. There will also be numerous opportunities for you to network and share ideas with colleagues from across the sector. I hope Prometheus will be a useful and enjoyable experience that will benefit both you and your organisation. Professor Fiona Devine OBE FAcSS FRSA Head, Alliance Manchester Business School Speakers Dr Nick Clifford Senior Fellow, Public Policy and Management, Alliance Manchester Business School Nick specialises in designing and delivering executive education programmes and his doctorate research was in corporate organisational change. Nick s earlier career included retail management; community work; and local Darryl Cooke Corporate and Private Equity Lawyer and Dealmaker Darryl is renowned as a private equity lawyer - he s solely done private equity transactions for over 25 years. Our vision is to see the 3 rd Sector recognised as a crucial part of any healthy economy, identifying and serving the needs of the community. The contributors to this year s event are experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields and share in the desire to see the 3 rd Sector rise to the challenges faced by people both here and overseas to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives. Emma Courtney Director, Courtney Consulting Emma established Courtney Consulting in 2008 having previously been Chief Executive of international cultural consultancy ABL Consulting. She is a Chartered Marketer and specialises in brand strategy, advocacy and research. Emma is also the UK Director of US-based consultancy Quonundrums, where she is responsible for translating insights to measurable business outcomes. She is an approved NCVO consultant and accredited Cultural Leadership Coach. Emma s diverse client base ranges from Facebook, Skype and Craftsy to Historic Royal Palaces, Hull City of Culture and Oldham Coliseum. Lucy Danger Emma Courtney

3 4-5 Speakers Frances Healey PhD Researcher, Alliance Manchester Business School Fran s research (funded by the Economic and Social Research Council) is exploring the future role of social value accounting across all business sectors. Fran is a management accountant by trade, with 20 years experience within large corporate organisations and in the not for profit sector. In parallel with her research at AMBS she also works as a consultant helping charities develop business plans, prepare funding applications and develop their accounting processes. Fran is also a board member of Social Value Network UK and trustee of two North West based charities. Frances Healey Catherine Barber-Brown Independent Consultant Catherine is an independent strategy consultant with over 20 years experience across strategy and change, focused most recently on the mutual financial services sector and transformation of purpose-led and values-led organisations.after a corporate career, she now runs her own consultancy and is supporting the Reza Salehnejad Lecturer in Business Economics, Alliance Manchester Business School NHS Transformation Unit in business and corporate development. She is also a Member of the University of Manchester General Assembly and Nominations Committee, a school governor and a Non-Executive Director of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. Catherine Barber-Brown Dr Susanne Espenlaub Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, Alliance Manchester Business School Susanne is a member of the Accounting and Finance division at AMBS. Her areas of interest are corporate finance and governance. Her published research deals with a range of issues affecting small and medium-sized enterprises including capital raising (e.g. initial public offerings, venture capital), contracting, (executive) compensation and outsourcing. Her most recent research deals with the impact of new technologies on the role of banks in SME finance. Reza is an economist with diverse interests in industrial organisation and business strategy, digital economy, big data, analytics and decisions, and market design. He is the programme director for International Business, Finance and Economics at AMBS and is the course leader Sir Stephen Bubb Director, Charity Futures for AMBS MBA in Digital Economy: Foundations and Strategies; and Current Topics in Macroeconomics. Reza has received numerous teaching awards at the University of Manchester as the most innovative lecturer. Reza Salehnejad Ismail Ertürk Director for Social Responsibility and Engagement, Alliance Manchester Business School Ismail joined AMBS in 1987 after having completed his post-graduate studies at New York University and having worked in Istanbul at an investment bank as assistant treasurer. He teaches on the MBA Programmes and has acted as Course Director of several banking programmes at the Executive Centre. He has wide international experience in carrying out executive workshops on international finance and banking. Dr Susanne Espenlaub Sir Stephen is the director of Charity Futures, a new project that promotes better charity leadership and governance. He was Chief Executive of the charity leaders network ACEVO (Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) for 15 years until spring ACEVO is Eunice Maytorena-sanchez Lecturer Project Management, Alliance Manchester Business School a dynamic organisation that represents leaders in civil society. In this role he was highly influential in determining government policy on the 3 rd sector, particularly for its role delivering public services. Sir Stephen Bubb Dr Rob Macmillan Research Fellow, The Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC), University of Birmingham Rob has been researching aspects of voluntary and community action for around 20 years in collaboration with other academics and researchers, policy makers and funders, and with key voluntary and community organisations. His main research interests are around the long term qualitative dynamics of voluntary action; the sustainability of voluntary and community organisations; the relationships between markets and the voluntary sector; and the changing field of capacity building and voluntary sector infrastructure. Ismail Erturk Eunice joined AMBS in October 2004 and her expertise is in assisting groups to develop a clearer understanding of their operational contexts, including stakeholder management and the management of Richard Hawkes Chief Executive, British Asian Trust Richard is Chief Executive of the British Asian Trust, the main international organisation linking the South Asian Diaspora in the UK to programmes fighting poverty and disadvantage across South Asia. He joined in 2015 after having held a range of senior roles in the UK and international not-for-profit sector including being Chief Executive of Scope, International Programmes Director for VSO and Chief Executive of Sense International. He has also worked for the UN and is a former National risk and uncertainty. She has worked with a a number of organisations in the public and commercial sectors in the UK including BAE Systems, BP, Heathrow and Transport for London. Secretary of the National Union of Students. He has held a number of senior sector and non-executive roles including being Chair of BOND, the umbrella body for UK international NGOs, and Chair of the Care and Support Alliance, a consortium of more than 70 voluntary organisations working together to reform the care system.
