H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady, H.E. Mrs. Margaret Kenyatta, attended the inauguration ceremony of H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda on Friday 18 th August, 2017, alongside other 20 Heads of State and Government as well as representatives of various governments and organizations. His visit to Rwanda was geared towards strengthening the strong ties and strategic partnership that exist between Kenya and Rwanda, especially the infrastructure development notably the Northern Corridor Integration Projects. President Paul Kagame took the oath of office marking the start of a new seven (7) year term. He won the August 4 th poll with a landslide of percent of votes cast. 2 MESSAGE FROM H. E. JOHN MWANGEMI High Commissioner This edition of the Bulletin highlights the main activities undertaken by the Mission in the last six months of 2017 in the furtherance of the existing good relations between Kenya and Rwanda and in the fulfillment of its mandate in Rwanda. The Mission had the honour of facilitating the highly successful official visit to Rwanda by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta and the First Lady, H.E. Mrs. Margaret Kenyatta in August when they attended the inauguration ceremony of H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda on Friday 18 th August, We also had the privilege of facilitating a highly successful official visit to Kenya by H.E President Paul Kagame when he attended and graced the swearing-in ceremony of H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta on 26 th November, The Mission also facilitated Cabinet Secretaries during their visit to Kigali to attend the Ministers Meeting on the 12 th Northern Corridor Integration Projects that preceded the Summit, and the visit by Amb. (Dr.) Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade when she visited Kigali from in November, 2015 on bilateral and regional issues with her Rwandan counterpart. The Kenya-Rwanda Business Forum was held in July, 2015 and we were happy to represent H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta at this important event. Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang i, also attended the Transform Africa Summit in October, The Mission facilitated Export Promotion Council (EPC) representatives to Rwanda Trade Expo in July/August Other important visits to Rwanda facilitated by the Mission included the Benchmark visits by the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC), the National Land Commission (NLC), the Committee on Implementation of the National Assembly of Kenya, and delegations of entrepreneurs from Baringo and Makueni Counties. I thank you.

YouthConnekt Africa Summit Held in July The 2017 YouthConnekt Africa Summit was held from 19 th to 21 st July, 2017 in Kigali, Rwanda and was hosted by H.E. President Paul Kagame and organized in collaboration with UNDP and UNCTAD. Over 2500 delegates attended the inaugural Youth Connekt Africa summit to look into ways to realize the potential of the continent s youthful population. The meeting aimed to create networks among delegates from all over the continent. With Africa estimated to have the world s largest youth population, there have been concerns on the need to address issues such as skills development, entrepreneurship, access to finance and employment. The Summit aimed to ensure that the continent s youthful demographic becomes an advantage as opposed to a challenge.

5 YouthConnekt (continued) The delegates included top executives from multinational companies that operate in Africa, leaders of civil society organisations, Africa s development partners, members of the academia, successful entrepreneurs, artists and youth opinion leaders from across the continent. Special guests and panelists included H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, African Development Bank chief Adesina Akinwumi, US singer and businessman Akon, former AfDB president Dr Donald Kaberuka, and billionaire Tonny Elumelu. One of the highlights of the Summit was the official launch of the Youth Connekt Africa Hub and YouthConnekt Africa Empowerment Fund, both of which aimed at empowering African youth. The initiative seeks to create 10 million jobs by 2020 in emerging industries; 25 million opportunities (through training and enrolment in workplaces); and identify, nurture and grow one million leaders that provide solutions, participate in advocacy and become role models in their communities. The hub will also facilitate to nurture 5,000 digital ambassadors in each African country to collectively help connect and digitally empower at least 100 million Africans allowing skills to be transferred to local communities. The Fund will be supported by private sector, donors, national governments, foundations and civil society organisations. It is expected to offer regional support to youth empowerment initiatives such as grants, financing and training to youth-led projects, investment in creation of innovative and highly scalable start-ups, among others. The Summit s concept was born from an initiative launched in 2012 by the Government of Rwanda in collaboration with One UN Rwanda. 14 th Meeting Of East African Magistrates And Judges Association (EAMJA) On 22 nd to 23 rd November 2017, the above annual EAMJA forum and AGM took place at the Serena Hotel in Kigali, under the

7 14 th Meeting Of East African Magistrates And Judges Association (EAMJA) On 22 nd to 23 rd November 2017, the above annual EAMJA forum and AGM took place at the Serena Hotel in Kigali, under the theme,' Enhancing use of ICT for an effective, transparent and accountable administration of Courts in East Africa.'' The aim of the meeting is to fast-track use of technology in the sector to accelerate service delivery. The meeting was officially opened by Rwanda s Chief Justice, Prof. Sam Rugege. The Association bolsters judicial independence, eradication of corruption and adoption of best practices in court administration. Participants included magistrates and chief justices from East African countries, the East Africa Court of Justice and top judiciary officials from the region as well as Judicial members of the commonwealth. Kenya s delegation was led by the Chief Justice Maraga, and included Justice Isaac Lenaola, Amb. John Mwangemi, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, Justice Nzioki wa Makau and High Court Judge Luka Kimaru, who is the current President of EAMJA. 8 The Kenya High Commission in Kigali Hosts Jamhuri Day 2017 Celebrations The Mission successfully hosted the celebrations of the 54 th Independence Anniversary of Kenya on 16 th December, 2017 at the Mission s Official Residence (for all Kenyans in Rwanda) However, unlike last year, no reception was hosted for diplomats to celebrate the event due to financial constraints. The High Commissioner, H.E. John Mwangemi, addressed Kenyans and congratulated them for their diligence, hard work, and for maintaining good conduct while in Rwanda. He urged them to continue enhancing Kenya s good image through their resilience and general way of life. The High Commissioner exhorted and invited all Kenyans to take advantage of the enabling environment and the numerous opportunities created by the Government back home and invest. He took the opportunity to congratulate them for peacefully turning up to vote in the Presidential elections held in August and October 2017 at the Mission premises. ABOVE: H.E. Amb.
