2 AUDITING PROGRAMME The IP Academy is pleased to invite applications to audit the modules in its Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law course. This Auditing Programme is intended for those who are unable or do not have the time to undergo the whole of the Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law course, but who would like to attend classes for a particular module in this course and not take any examinations. Certificates of Participation for the module chosen will be awarded to those who have attended at least 90% of the classes for that module. Please note that successful enrolment in this Auditing Programme does not entitle the participant to borrowing privileges at the Law Library, NUS. Application for Library membership can be made separately to the Law Library. 3 MODULE SYNOPSIS Law of Patents & Trade Secrets The aim of this module is to provide a working familiarity with Singapore's patent law protecting inventions and the common law action protecting trade secrets. In addition, there will be some focus on patents in the field of biotechnology. The general topics to be covered include: the patentability criteria (novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability); infringement and defences; exploitation and technology transfer; law of confidence. MODULE SYNOPSIS Special Topics This module deals with, or pulls together, certain intellectual property matters which are affected by several rights; and other matters of relevance to intellectual property. Typically, the following topics will be covered : (i) information technology; (ii) intellectual property and biotechnology; (iii) IP in cyberspace (eg. domain name disputes); (iv) parallel imports; (v) competition law; (vi) exploitation (including technology transfer); remedies SPEAKERS CV Module: Law of Patents and Trade Secrets Tutor: Professor Alison Firth Alison originally read physics at Oxford (St Hugh's College); later she took an MSc in polymer physics and taught physics and mathematics in London and in Lima, Peru. Pursuing an interest in patents, she qualified as a barrister and has practised in intellectual property chambers since 1983 (currently as a door tenant at Ingenuity Intellectual Property Chambers). From 1987 to 2004 she was a full time member of the intellectual property law unit at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London 9where she later became visiting professor). She was January Term Visiting Professor in the Law School at University of Western Ontario, Canada, in From 2005 to 2009 Alison was Professor of Commercial Law at Newcastle Law School, Newcastle University, where she is now a visiting professor. From 1994 to 2007 she was honorary legal adviser to the British Copyright Council. In February 2009, she took up a chair in law at Surrey. On her retirement in 2012 she was appointed Professor Emeritus in law at the University of Surrey. In February-April 2013 she was an Erskine visiting fellow at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, returning to Canterbury as a KEENZ visiting scholar in March/April In 2013 and 2015 she taught patent law for Singapore's Intellectual Property Academy. Tutor: Associate Professor Burton Ong Faculty of Law, NUS Burton pursued his undergraduate and graduate degrees at NUS, Oxford University, and Harvard Law School. He graduated at the top of his LLB class at NUS and BCL class at Oxford, where he was also awarded the Vinerian Scholarship. Since joining the Law Faculty in 1999, he has taught Legal Methods and System, Contract Law, Intellectual Property Law and Competition Law. His current teaching portfolio includes jump-starting the first year students in his Contract Law tutorial groups with common law concepts and theory, and exploring the expanding galaxies of Intellectual Property and Competition

4 Law with the third and fourth year students enrolled in these courses. He recently organised an international conference on "Intellectual Property and Biological Resources" in December 2003 on behalf of APCEL and its partner institutions. Tutor: Associate Professor Daniel Seng Faculty of Law, NUS Daniel Seng teaches and researches on information technology law and infocommunications law. Between 2001 and 2003, he was concurrently the Director of Research, Technology Law Development Group at the Singapore Academy of Law. He graduated with firsts from NUS and Oxford, where he received the Rupert Cross Prize in He had just received his doctoral degree from Stanford Law School, where he used machine learning, natural language processing and big data techniques to conduct research on copyright takedown notices. While he was at Stanford, he was a nonresidential fellow with the Center for Legal Infomatics (CodeX). Daniel was previously a partner and head of the technology practice at Messrs Rajah & Tann. He was amicus curiae to the Court of Appeal of Singapore in the case of Chwee Kin Keong & Ors v Digilandmall.com Pte Ltd, the leading Singapore case on unilateral mistake in the digital environment. Daniel has presented papers at various local, regional and international conferences and written on evidence, information technology and intellectual property laws. He was a member of various Singapore governmental committees that undertook legislative reforms in information technology and intellectual property laws. He is also an active consultant to the World Intellectual Property Organization, where he has researched, delivered papers and published monographs on copyright exceptions for academic institutions, music copyright in the Asia Pacific and the liability of Internet intermediaries. Tutor: Lam Chung Nian Head, IP Technology and Telecommunications Wong Partnership LLP Chung Nian heads the IP, Technology and Telecommunications practice at Wong Partnership LLP, one of Singapore's largest and leading law firms. He advises on the full spectrum of IP matters, covering transactional, enforcement and advisory work including complex investment agreements, technology transfers and licensing, IT agreements, joint venture agreements, franchising and IP due diligence, and also IP asset acquisitions, divestments and other arrangements in the context of corporate mergers and acquisitions, as well as public and private fund raising exercises. He also advises government regulators on policies, licence schemes and research projects. He is also active in the area of contentious IP/IT matters and arbitrations involving patent, copyright, trade mark and other IP/IT disputes. On the IP enforcement front, he acts on behalf of international rights protection agencies in the music and movie industries, and advises them on strategic initiatives for dealing with emerging IP issues. Chung Nian is recognised as a leading IP and technology lawyer in many international legal directories, such as The Legal 500, Chambers, Expert Guides, and Who's Who Legal. He is a regular contributor to the Computer Law & Security Review, and has also had articles published in The Law Gazette, Trade Mark World and the International Bar Association's newsletters. He has authored a chapter in IP Client Strategies in the Asia- Pacific published by Aspatore Books and contributed the Singapore Chapter in The Art Collecting Legal Handbook published by Thomson Reuters. In a pro bono capacity, he is also the legal lead for Creative Commons Singapore.

5 Tutor: Professor Ng-Loy Wee Loon Faculty of Law, NUS NG-LOY Wee Loon's main research interests lie in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) Law. She teaches "Law of Intellectual Property" which focuses on Singapore's IP regime, as well as "International Trademark Law and Policy" and "International Copyright Law and Policy". Amongst her academic publications is the text on Law of Intellectual Property of Singapore (2nd ed, 2014). Outside of the university, her involvement in the Iegal landscape of Singapore includes the following: a member of the Resource Panel for Government Parliamentary Committee for Law and Home Affairs ( ); a member of the Board of Directors of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore ( ); a member of the Board of Governors of the IP Academy ( ); a member of the Senate of the Singapore Academy of Law ( ); a member of Singapore's Copyright Tribunal (since 2009); a member of the Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy Panel (since 2014); IP Adjudicator with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (since 2014). Tutor: Dr Victoria Lovatt Asia IP Manager Abbott Nutrition R&D Victoria Lovatt is a Singapore Patent Attorney, a European Patent Attorney and a Chartered Patent Attorney. Victoria s qualifications include a PhD in Neuroimmunology from Cambridge University and a BSc Biochemistry/Biological Chemistry from Nottingham University. Victoria has over 15 years experience in the patent profession. Victoria first joined a private practice in London, before moving in-house and spending seven years at an MNC. Victoria moved to Singapore in 2010, first working in a private practice firm, before joining a start-up pharmaceutical company to handle all their IP matters, including IP due diligence for potential in-licensing. Now with Abbott, Victoria manages patent matters in Asia for their Nutrition Division. Victoria teaches patent courses for IPOS (IP Academy and NUS), has tutored on behalf of WIPO at the IP offices of Vietnam (2013) and Bhutan (2012), and has taught three patent drafting workshops in the Philippines, on request of the EPO and IPOPHL.

They must attend a minimum of 75% of the classes for the course in order to qualify for CPD Points and may not be absent from each session for more than 15 minutes. Points obtained are based on the actual number of classes attended, provided that the Attendance Policy is complied with. Withdrawal & Refund Policy I.
