2 Dear Friends For STARS and all our partners and supporters, 2011 was an exciting year of spreading hope across Western Canada. Agreements were finalized with the governments of Saskatchewan and Manitoba and the STARS program began operating in two more provinces, providing enhanced care for the critically ill and injured to thousands more people. Now, rural communities in three and a half provinces have the sense of hope that comes from knowing fast, expert medical care is closer than ever before. This milestone would not have been possible without the inspirational commitment of each and every one of our STARS donors and volunteers. Our community-based model draws support from government, the corporate sector, individuals, local businesses, service groups, clubs and many more. It is through the dedication of our community supporters that STARS is able to provide value-added programs in education and community outreach, and deliver a level of excellence in critical care that is internationally acclaimed. Your involvement ensures that STARS is always connected to its roots in rural Western Canada. This year also saw the transition of Dr. Powell from the role of CEO to Founder and Director Emeritus. Dr. Powell will continue to be an ambassador for STARS and will share his expertise with the STARS team and others in the field of air ambulance and emergency medicine. Most importantly, he will spend more time with STARS volunteers and donors, the backbone of our continued success. Some other highlights of 2011, made possible by your generous support: A total of 41,508 donors and 150 community events raised more than $14.3 million. 525 new supporters joined our monthly giving program. STARS Alberta Lottery sold out for the 18th year in a row, raising more than $10 million. Received one of the largest personal donations in our history, $2 million, donated by Susan and Doug Ramsay. In recognition, STARS unveiled the Susan Ramsay Advanced Skills Institute, which provides ongoing education for the STARS air medical crew. 450 volunteers contributed 4,388 hours as ambassadors for STARS. Responded to 1,817 missions and flew 2,793 hours. Acquired three BK117 aircraft. Thank you for believing in the value of STARS and its role in the life-saving chain of survival. You have helped many in their time of need and we are deeply grateful for your ongoing commitment to the vision of saving lives.
