2 Course Description and Requirements MLD-831 applies the theory and practice of entrepreneurial management in the private and social sectors to business plans for start-ups. The course seeks to prepare students for future leadership in entrepreneurial ventures. In particular this Spring seminar is designed for students who are prepared to (1) Create a business plan for a social venture, or (2) Perfect one they have already developed For most of the course, with the help of readings and case studies, we will discuss and explore entrepreneurial strategies, management and leadership in each sector. And for much of the latter half, at each class session students will give short oral presentations on the progress of their business plans. Each student will prepare and submit an individual page business plan, for a present or prospective entrepreneurial venture - - applying the course insights to a proposal/business plan for a new venture. Grades will be based 1/2 on the quality of class participation, (including the business plan presentations); and 1/2 on the individual term paper/business plan. Students without prior academic or professional exposure to financial management are urged to enroll in the Entrepreneurial Finance course (MLD 829 MA and MLD 829 MB) prior to or concurrently with MLD 831. Recommended Texts: Three books will figure prominently in the course, which you should own: Peter F. Drucker, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Harper & Row Publishers, 1985) Available for purchase at the Harvard Coop or on reserve at the HKS Library Not in course packet David Bornstein, How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas (Oxford University Press, 2004) Available for purchase at the Harvard Coop or on reserve at the HKS Library Not in course packet Ashoka Innovators for the Public, Leading Social Entrepreneurs (Arlington, VA) To be provided by instructor Not in course packet 2
