3 The Western Cape Funding Fair aims to facilitate face-to-face contact between entrepreneurs/businesses and various funding institutions within the region. The initiative seeks to educate and empower businesses on the holistic approach and processes to follow in turning ideas into bankable businesses plans that attract the right type of funding and investment. 5 Speaker bios Alan Winde Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities Before embarking on a career in politics, Minister Alan Winde founded and successfully operated ten businesses, whilst actively entrenching himself in his local community. Having earned a reputation as a respected and trusted member of society, in 1996, he ran as an independent candidate and was successfully elected to the South Cape District Council. It wasn t long before the leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA) approached Alan to run for Provincial Parliament in the Western Cape, a responsibility and challenge he gladly accepted. Between 2000 and 2009 he served in various political roles, including Chief Whip for the official opposition, Western Cape Provincial Finance Chairperson and as a Member of the Executive Committee. In 2009 the DA won the majority vote in the Western Cape Province and Alan was elected as the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. In 2014, following an even greater majority win, Premier Helen Zille appointed Alan as the Minister of Economic Opportunities, in charge of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. He was inaugurated into the role on 26 May Marius Alberts Regional Leader Deloitte Western Cape Marius was appointed to the position in January He joined the firm in 1997 after completing his legal training and is an admitted attorney. Marius became a director in 2005, and in 2007 was chosen to lead Deloitte s national Forensics Unit where he went on to build a team which established a reputation for combating fraud and corruption. He ran the Western Cape Risk Advisory business between 2009 and He is one of Deloitte South Africa s leading spokespeople on the topics of fraud and anti-corruption and continues to lead Deloitte Tip Offs Anonymous, Africa s leading whistle-blowing and ethics line. Mike is also the Team Leader for GEM South Africa and is currently based at the Faculty of Commerce, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

6 Michael Herrington Executive Director Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) GEM is part of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association (GERA) an organisation operating is over 100 countries covering all geographic regions and at all levels of economic development. Mike is also the Team Leader for GEM South Africa and is currently based at the Faculty of Commerce, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Mike has been involved in the running and start up of businesses since the 70 s and has worked in South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. In 2001, Mike joined the UCT Graduate School of Business School where he founded the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He has been involved in teaching MBA students specialising in New Venture Planning and Entrepreneurship as well as teaching in Customised Academic Learning and Executive Education Programmes. He focuses on teaching, research and business creation both in the high-tech, highpotential sector as well as with SMME s. An SMME specialist, he has been involved in many initiatives in the sector including research into SMME s in South Africa, sub-saharan Africa and South America among other developing countries. Mike has an MBA from University of Cape Town and a PhD from a London institution. Tim Harris Chief Executive Officer Wesgro Previously Director of Trade and Investment in the office of the Executive Mayor at the City of Cape Town, Tim also served as Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister of Finance for the Democratic Alliance (DA). He was the MP for Cape Town s Good Hope constituency and the Parliamentary Counsellor to Lindiwe Mazibuko, the Leader of the Opposition. Tim has a BA in English Literature and a Masters in Economics from the University of Cape Town. After a stint in investment banking he joined the DA s political staff and worked on five election campaigns. Tim has also served as the vice president for Africa on the bureau of Liberal International, the global group of liberal parties, and currently sits on the board of SiliconCape, Cape Town s technology promotion initiative. 6

7 Kieno Kammies Talk Show Host/Entrepreneur/Angel Investor/Dad At the Age of 40, Kieno Kammies has spent half of his life in commercial radio, most of it at Primedia Broadcasting where he currently hosts the breakfast show on Cape Talk. Kieno s core passion is business and people. He has built an amazing network, which he leverages and adds value to through his current business ventures. Kieno owns Kieno Kammies Business Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a strategy company with EQ at its core. Strategy without building meaningful value propositions for all people who make your business, is a waste of time, is what he believes. He has also become an angel investor, buying a third of a drone business with an established platform that aims to improve farmers crop yields, provide a peace of mind airborne security solutions, as well as solutions that can save lives in the search and rescue sphere. His most important job though is being a father to teenage boys, Tyler and Cameron. Having grown up in Elsies River in Cape Town, Kieno believes it s important to remember your roots, especially the possibilities to improve lives through creating self-belief and opportunities. Guy Harris Entrepreneurship Officer SA Institute for Entrepreneurship Guy Harris is the Entrepreneurship Officer of the SA Institute for Entrepreneurship.

Guy is passionate about education and entrepreneurship and leveraging them to help address unemployment and poverty and make a more sustainable South Africa.

8 Guy Harris Entrepreneurship Officer SA Institute for Entrepreneurship Guy Harris is the Entrepreneurship Officer of the SA Institute for Entrepreneurship. This NGO started using interactive learning to upskill entry level, base of the pyramid entrepreneurs through idea generation, planning and implementation. Guy is passionate about education and entrepreneurship and leveraging them to help address unemployment and poverty and make a more sustainable South Africa. He was previously part time with Bell Equipment focussing on government, industry relations, strategic and empowerment matters. He is on the Boards of the SA Bureau of Standards, where he chairs its audit and risk committee and Booyco Engineering. He is the Vice Chair of the Council of Northlink TVET College. He was a Board and Audit Committee member of Proudly SA and chaired its Marketing Committee. Prior to going independent Guy was Financial Director at the South African Sugar Association, Commercial Director at Bell Equipment Limited, where he was a Board Member for 18 years, and Managing Director of Avis Rent A Car SA. Guy qualified as a CA (SA) with Hons in 1977 and was the head of the Deloittes Durban consulting practice before moving into industry. Alan Knott-Craig Jr Founder and CEO Project Isizwe Founder and CEO of Project Isizwe, a non-profit company managing the deployment of the largest public Free WiFi network in South Africa. Former CEO of Mxit, Africa s biggest social network. Founder World of Avatar, an investment house for mobile apps for Africa. CEO of iburst from 2006 to 2009, building one of South Africa s largest wireless broadband networks. Founded Cellfind in 2003, one of Africa s first location-based services providers. Between 2003 and 2013 co-founded and/or funded 17 companies in the TMT sector in Africa, including Cellfind, Lucky Mobile, ifind34600, COLV, World of Avatar, Toodu, FSMS, Triloq, 6th Line, Daily Maverick, ARC Telecoms, Pondering Panda, MorMor Media, and Boom.fm. In April 2008 published Don t Panic, a best-selling book aimed at persuading South Africans to stay in the country. In 2009 named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In 2012, co-authored Mobinomics, the story of Mxit, the biggest social network to come from Africa. 9 Darlene Menzies Managing Owner TDH Darlene is a technology innovator and serial entrepreneur; she founded her first software company in Darlene has firsthand experience in what it takes to start and grow a business. She understands the difficulties entrepreneurs encounter in trying to raise finance and the enormous challenges they have to overcome to establish a successful enterprise. Over the past ten years Darlene has used this experience to develop practical, easyto-use software tools for small businesses. Some of these include the award winning SMEasy and finfind. Darlene won the South African Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010 and was a top five Finalist for SA ICT Person of the Year alongside MD Microsoft SA. She has also been recognised by Swiss-based STARS Group as a future Global Leader. Darlene works alongside Government, Business and Civil Society to address youth unemployment and to develop small businesses. Her life motto is to live an extraordinary life you must resist an ordinary approach. Adam Ismail Director ENSafrica Director at ENSafrica in the corporate commercial department and specialises in mergers and acquisitions, both in South Africa and Africa, as well as representing multi-nationals with their investments into South Africa and Africa. Within mergers and acquisitions, he has extensive experience in black economic empowerment transactions, where he has rendered advice on a number of significant high profile deals, and advises on the BEE Act and BEE codes of good practice. Another area of substantial experience within mergers and acquisitions is real estate, where he has been involved in the structuring and implementation of a number of high profile property developments in South Africa and Africa. Adam s experience includes the drafting of commercial contracts such as shareholder s agreements, sale of share agreements, sale of business agreements and service agreements. He also has experience in company sales and purchases, management buy-outs and commercial transactions, due diligence, and employee share schemes. André Pottas Partner, Corporate Finance, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Advisory Leader Africa, Deloitte André is the Deloitte Infrastructure and Capital Projects Advisory Leader for Africa. He is also the regional leader of the KwaZulu-Natal Corporate Finance practice. He has 20 years of local and international experience, 11 of these as a Deloitte partner, covering project finance, Public Private Partnerships, debt origination, securitisation, treasury banking and asset management. As part of his debt origination portfolio, André has provided advisory and transaction support services on a large number of debt capital issuances, in both the South African and Eurobond markets. He is a past Chairman of the South African Securitisation Forum. André is a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA) and a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers of Southern Africa. Mweli Ndaba Independent Consultant Mweli Ndaba, a UCT alumni, is a qualified Charted Accountant who completed his training contract at Deloitte and served several roles within Deloitte until May His experience includes Audit, Learning and Development, Talent and Transformation, and Corporate Finance Advisory where he engaged with both public and private sector clients across various industries including Banking, Development Finance, Manufacturing, Health, Education, ICT, Agriculture and Transport. A member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), Mweli is passionate about the role of the SMME sector and the human capital that drives it.
