4 ISADORE FRED FREIBERGER Few men have had a more Horatio Alger-like history than Isadore Fred Freiberger, one of Cleveland-Marshall Law School's most distinguished graduates. A street-corner newsboy at the age of seven, he is today chairman of the boards of the Cleveland Trust Co. and the Forest City Publishing Co., publisher of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and News. Between these two extremes were enough other jobs that a half dozen men would be proud to divide them among themselves and believe they had lived full lives. They ranged from gardener, teamster, night watchman and factory worker in Mr. Freiberger's school days to president and director of the Boston Panama Co., secretary and director of the Champion Realty Co., president and director of the Scofield Estates Corp., vice president and director of the Wyoming Pocahontas Coal and Coke Co., and many others far too numerous to mention. His honors have been multitude, yet they have left him strangely untouched, humble and sincere. They have ranged from the coveted Charles Eisenman Award for outstanding community service to honorary doctorates from both his alma maters. And the new Western Reserve University library is to bear his name. Although Mr. Freiberger has devoted his adult career to his bank, a job which was to have been a temporary stop-gap before launching a career in law, the facets of his life have been many. Not only have they shone brightly in commerce, civic contributions and education, but they have also turned their gleam to such sports as basketball, football and baseball. Born in New York City December 12, 1879, Mr. Freiberger was brought to Cleveland as a child by his parents and has remained here since. He was graduated from Central High School, received his A. B. degree from Western Reserve University in 1901 and was graduated in 1904 from what is now Cleveland- Marshall Law School. A year before he was graduated from night law school, Mr. Freiberger was married to the former Miss Fannie Fertel whom he met at a dance when he was in college. They have two children, a son, Lloyd Stanton Freiberger, and a daughter, Mrs. Willard Meilzinger. Published by EngagedScholarship@CSU,
5 The citation that went with his honorary LL.D. degree from Cleveland-Marshall last June gave only a hint of the breadth of his varied interests when it said: "One of our graduates, of whom we are justly proud, is known as a national leader in the world of business and finance as well as one who has given generously of his time to promote and sustain the social, cultural and philanthropic life of Greater Cleveland. The name of I. F. Freiberger stands at the top of the list of all who serve in community activities that are for the good of the people." And Mr. Freiberger, trustee at the law school, top banker and civic leader, replied in typically humble fashion when he said, simply, "I am stunned and overwhelmed." 4
